Chinese celebrate their new year in Kolkata

[India News]: Kolkata, Feb 9 :

The small Chinese community in Kolkata on Wednesday celebrated their new year, this time the year being the year of the rooster. Chinese celebrate the New Year as a family affair, marking it as a time of reunion and thanksgiving, with the celebrations generally bordering on religious ceremony given in honour of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors. The Chinese prayed at the Buddhist temple in the city's Tangra locality, and exchanged greetings and lit incense sticks and candles. The whole Tangra locality was decorated with balloons and Chinese lights. Friends and relatives visit each other houses. CC Woh, a Chinese living in the city said, that as rooster is famous for its courage and talent, people are expected to be more courageous. "This year is called the year of the Rooster. Actually the Rooster means courageous and talented. So we greet people to become more courageous for the coming year," he said. "We celebrate New Year by wishing each other. We burn crackers," said Youlanda, another Chinese. Residents as usual are looking forward to the various other programmes lined up for the day. "First thing is the dragon show. Then we go to our temple and we pray in the night at 1.30 a.m. Morning we pray in the house and new-year starts," said Derek. Traditionally, the Chinese New Year celebration starts with the first New Moon of the new-year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new-year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. (ANI)

Phra Pathom Chedi

About 60km to the South of Bangkok, in the town of Nakhon Pathom, stands probably the earliest Buddhist monument in Thailand, Phra Pathom Chedi. A few years ago, I had the great pleasure of visiting this place of worship and (even) took some photos. Recently, a friend sent me an official guide, published by the 'Office of Utility Management and Maintenance of the Great Pagoda'. Now that I have scanned in a few of my photos, I thought I'd take the opportunity of presenting a little tour to indicate especially how old are the roots of Buddhism in Thailand and also how the Buddha Dhamma can be seen in practice in such places. The historical notes are taken from the official guide.
The roots of this pagoda are over 2000 years old. During his reign in India in the 3rd Century before Jesus Christ (B.C.), Emperor Asoka sent out missionaries to lands far away. One of these was what is presently Thailand, at that time called Suvarnaphumi. The evidence for this has been provided by the discovery of stone wheels of law (Dharmachakra), carved altars and the Buddha's footprints, all of which preceded the making of the first Buddha rupas (images) in 143 B.C.
Phra Pathom Chedi means 'The First Stupa' (Phra used here as emphasis for the sense of 'holy'). The original stupa was 39 metres high and built in the style of the great stupa at Sanchi. It is considered sacred since it contains some relics of the Buddha Gotama that were brought over by the early missionaries. The orginal monument is still there, but has since been built over and restored under the guidance of various monarchs. This is indeed a very special chedi for the rulers of Thailand, since it has been the royal tradition the reigning monarch must offer candles and joss sticks whenever passing Phra Pathom Chedi.

The present monument, is the realisation of the wish of King Mongkut, Rama IV, who, as a prince had been several times on pilgrimage to the stupa as a monk. At that time the stupa had fallen into decay, so the prince resolved to restore it. When he acceded to the throne, he therefore instructed its restoration by building an enormous chedi as a protective cover of the existing one. This proved a difficult task - the first attempt collapsed in bad weather. However, in due course this was achieved and in 1870, the spire was raised during the reign of his successor, King Chulalongkorn.

Today, the chedi lies at the heart of a town that celebrates its 100th anniversary this year (the name Nakhon Pathom replacing Nakorn Chaisri somewhat later). Before 1897, the stupa was in the midst of jungle, so King Chulalongkorn ordered Nakorn Chaisri to be transplanted a couple of miles! The pagoda is generally approached from the North side along an extended avenue. Even from far away one gains an impression of the large scale. At 120 metres in height, it was the tallest Buddhist monument in the world, perhaps it still is?
Moving closer, one approaches marble steps that lead up towards the North vihara (or chapel) and there looms the image of a standing Buddha.

VIỆN ĐẠI HỌC BERKELEY THÀNH LẬP TRUNG TÂM NGHIÊN CƯU PHẬT GIÁO MỚI

By Janet Gilmore, Media Relations 11 February 2005

Berkeley, Calif.

Campus establishes new Buddhist Studies Center

BERKELEY – Buddhism's New Age-type appeal has launched literally hundreds of self-help books, scores of films, and captured the imagination of more than a few Hollywood superstars.
But do popular notions of Buddhism conform to what scholars know about the religion as it has been practiced in Asia? According to Robert Sharf, the director of the University of California, Berkeley's new Center for Buddhist Studies, the answer is straightforward: No.
Sharf would like to do something about this. Through the new center, he hopes to hold not only scholarly symposia in which academics from around the world share and discuss their latest research, but also host events designed to reach a lay audience. The center's "Speaking for the Buddha? -- Buddhism and the Media" conference that took place this week reflects that effort.
"I want to start a dialogue that will lead to a more sophisticated appreciation among the public of Buddhist history and teachings," said Sharf.
In American pop culture, he said, Buddhism is indistinguishable from modern New Age spirituality that promises meditative insight, happiness and self-fulfillment, yet demands nothing in return such as attendance at church, participation in ritual, moral restraint or study.
According to Sharf, this depiction of Buddhism would have been unrecognizable to most Asian Buddhist authorities throughout history. Buddhism, like any other tradition that deserves to be taken seriously, does not offer simple answers to complex questions, and is far from the stereotypically peaceful faith that is often presented in the media, he said.
Scholars who study Buddhist scriptures and historical documents in their original languages (Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, etc.), and who are familiar with the Buddhist traditions that survive today in Asia, are often astonished and dismayed at how Buddhism is presented in American media and consider it to be caricature, Sharf said. He contends that what passes for Buddhism is often antithetical to the principles of Buddhism first established in India by the Buddha some 2,500 years ago. For example, Sharf points out that while meditation was valued by Buddhists, throughout much of Buddhist history meditation was not considered appropriate for the masses but was reserved for ordained celibate monks. A life of scriptural study, ritual practice and self-restraint -- strict observance of the Buddhist precepts -- were just as central to Buddhist practice as was meditation. The notion that Buddhist meditation could make one a better parent, spouse, lover or boss -- a notion repeated in a host of modern "Buddhist" self-help books -- would have struck traditional Buddhist masters as bizarre at best, dangerous at worst, Sharf said. He also believes that the romantic image of Buddhist monks as always leading lives of quiet contemplation is equally misguided. Many Buddhist institutions, like Christian churches, had broad economic and political interests, and this resulted in not only efforts to promote peace but also complicity in racism and even war. Like any other tradition, said Sharf, for Buddhism to remain meaningful and relevant it must come to terms with its past. "Whitewashing Buddhism does not serve anyone's interests, including the Buddhists," said Sharf. "Buddhism deserves to be better understood -- it is an intellectually sophisticated tradition with a rich literary and artistic legacy." He should know. Sharf's passion for the subject led him across the globe and into a career studying Buddhism. Sharf became interested in the subject as a teenager in Canada during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Feeling the need to learn more from Asian authorities, he traveled to India and Burma where he studied with a number of Buddhist teachers, later becoming an ordained priest himself.
As a college student, he read classical Buddhist texts in their original languages, eventually receiving a master's degree in Chinese from the University of Toronto and a doctorate in Buddhist Studies from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on understanding medieval Chinese adaptations of Indian Buddhist tenants and institutions. As Zen was one of these adaptations, his research led him to reexamine how Zen came to be understood in the West. One focus of his work has been a number of Japanese Zen "missionaries" who came to Europe and the United States at the turn of the last century. These missionaries, said Sharf, many of whom were urbane intellectuals versed in Western philosophy, packaged Zen for export in a manner that rendered it appealing to Western intellectuals interested in religion but alienated from the church. As a result, many of the ideas that Americans consider central to Zen -- the centrality of spiritual experience for example -- are actually lifted from Western thinkers such as the philosopher William James. Sharf concludes that Buddhism was made to order for a Western audience hungry for "spirituality" but wanting little to do with rituals, moral precepts or institutions. Sharf admits that Buddhism's current cachet in pop culture does have one positive consequence for scholars, namely, a growing demand for Buddhist specialists in universities and colleges throughout America. Sharf noted that, in recent years, new faculty positions and programs have been established or expanded at most of the nation's leading research institutions, including UC Berkeley, Harvard University, Michigan, Stanford University, UCLA, and Yale University. Buddhist Studies has emerged as a mainstream discipline within academia, he said.Unfortunately, Sharf said, while scholars of Buddhism seek to deepen knowledge and understanding of the religion, few are inclined to take that knowledge directly to the public.
"Most (Buddhist studies) academics don't even try to reach a lay audience because they feel the gap between the scholarly and the popular understandings of Buddhism is simply too great,." he said. The goal of UC Berkeley's new Center for Buddhist Studies, however, is not only to promote research among scholars, but also to bring the findings of scholarship to non-academics interested in the history and teachings of Buddhism. The scholar's task is not to pass judgment on how any individual chooses to practice his or her faith, Sharf said, but through the center, he wants to begin a dialogue with the community. Said Sharf: "I want to try to reduce the gap." tags - CMS--> tags around entire link list - CMS-->

Package tours to offer condolences to tsunami victims

BANGKOK, Feb 9 (TNA) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched a tour programme for Thais who want to particpate in religious ceremonies in memory of last year's tsunami deaths.
The “Merit Making Caravan to Andaman” is a joint project between the TAT, local tour operators and airlines.
The project will start with Buddhist ceremonies in big cities across the nation, including the northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima to boost the morale of the survivors and the local residents.
The caravan will gather in Bangkok on 10 February and then go to the southern resort province of Phang Nga, the country's hardest hit area from the 26 December tsunamis.
There will be a ceremony to offer merit and pay respects to those who died during the massive waves at the Ban Bang Niang Beach in the province's Khoa Lak district on 13 February when thousands of tourists and local residents were killed.
Spiritual leaders of four religious faiths -- Buddhist, Muslim, Protestant and Catholic - will lead the ceremony.
Thais believe that the living should offer merit and pass it to the dead through religious ceremonies to help ease their grieved spirits and guide them to eternal peace. (TNA)--E112, E002

The Dhamma Times, 30 July 2004 , By Karen Goa

Living a monk's life in South Korea

The Dhamma Times, 30 July 2004by Karen Goa

New Zealand Herald, Auckland - Beneath rows of lotus lanterns grey-robed monks chant, kneel, bow to the golden Buddha and rise in graceful repetitions.Crouched like a frog on a cushion I struggle to rise with them. My companion on the right wobbles, loses her balance and crashes backward into the wall. The monks pay no attention and begin the 108 "agony" bows to discipline their minds and rid themselves of earthly desires. We take our undisciplined minds and unruly Western bodies out of the temple, leaving the monks with 102 bows to go.Naksan Temple sits on a cliff overlooking the East Sea in Korea's northern Gangwon province. Over its 1300-year-history Naksan - The Temple of Compassion - has suffered foreign invasion of all kinds. The most recent is the most peaceful. Since the temple first started offering overnight stays to visitors to the World Cup in 2002, hundreds of Westerners have walked through its stone gates and sampled Buddhist monastic life. Some are curious about Buddhism and Korean culture, others are looking for a temporary retreat from city life and modern-day worries. The secret of happiness lies in the mind's release from worldly ties: Buddhist proverb.First, give up the jeans.Wearing standard-issue yellow jackets and green baggy trousers instead of our own clothes our group - mainly Singaporeans and a few New Zealanders and Aussies - adds a buttercup touch to the temple gardens. It's hard to imagine a more worry-free spot. There's a simple beauty in the Japanese maples framing wide-winged pavilions, white lilacs hanging in bunches beside a stone well, crimson peony splashes against wooden lattice shutters.During the 35-year Japanese occupation much of the temple complex was burnt to the ground, but the post-war buildings are recreated in the same centuries-old style. Some of the earliest plants, like the gingko and nashi (Naksan) pear trees, survived the flames. The culture survived too, but with surprising modern twists. In front of the largest and newest temple serious-faced young men in white baggy suits wait in military lines. They're tae kwon do students and they're performing Korea's ancient and most famous form of martial arts especially for us.Their leader claps bamboo sticks together, the cameras are ready - and the 80s pop tune It's Raining Men blares across the square. With "God bless Mother Nature, she's a single woman too" ringing in the ears it's hard to concentrate on the high kicks and low punches. Things get messy when we're invited to try it ourselves. Most Korean children take up tae kwon do at an early age, but we look like chickens on bad drugs.Tolerance, patience and understanding are the highest virtues every man should develop.Gogyoung Seunim, a shaven-headed monk with a face like a silvery moon, shows plenty of these virtues as she guides us through "Balwugongyang" at the evening meal. This traditional meal ceremony is another form of mind discipline that teaches equality and self-control.As for nearly every activity, we sit cross-legged on floor cushions. There are formal rules - eat everything you take. Don't chat. Follow the order of the meal.I spoon small portions of rice and millet, seaweed soup, mountain vegetable, lotus root and kimchi, the spicy Korean version of sauerkraut, into my set of shiny wooden "balwu" bowls. I eat everything in my bowls and carefully wipe them clean using a chopstick and a large slice of pickled radish - this is no easy trick, especially for the chopstick-challenged. It takes several swipes with the radish. Then I swish the dishes with water and, as instructed, drink the dregs. The next part has been causing me consternation all through the meal. If someone in the room - and there are 33 people dining - doesn't clean everything from their bowl, even the tiniest grain of rice or a chili seed, their watery dregs go into a bucket that everyone must drink from.I try to be tolerant of the yappy woman with the dirty dishes sitting next to me but fear of the bucket water is giving me heartburn. Eventually we're given the all clear. Westerners probably wouldn't have to drink the bucket water anyway, we're told later, but it's a salutary lesson in the value of food.Fools wait for a lucky day, but every day is a lucky day for an industrious man.The temple bell gongs once, twice, three times - 25 more to go. As an alarm clock it's more like having rose petals dropped on your head than a slap in the face, but still, it's 3am.The next-door neighbours rouse themselves for the dawn ceremonial service and their last chance for the 108 agony bows. It's easier to roll over on the sleeping mat, snuggle into the underfloor heating that Koreans have used for centuries, and snooze luxuriously till daybreak.By the time I push open the shutters the monks - and some more motivated visitors - have already worshipped, meditated and eaten their morning meal. While there's no pressure to do any of the temple activities, I think, "Shiftless piglet, must do better".After their morning rituals the silent monks sweep leaves off the path leading through a forest of sea pine to Hongryeonam, a small temple built into the cliffs. On the way to the temple there's a stone statue of the goddess of compassion rising from a carved lotus bloom. Standing 16 m high the statue took six years to complete and can be seen by ships at sea. This may or may not be a good thing. Naksan Temple is only 50km from the Demilitarised Zone between North and South Korea. A barbed wire fence stretches along Naksan beach and the temple grounds to keep out North Koreans invading from the East. Sea. Stones hanging on the fence act as an alarm - if the stones fall, look out for North Koreans.Even at this hour South Korean soldiers are up patrolling the temple's cliffside perimeter fence. Of all the little cultural contrasts on this trip, this juxtaposition between peaceful temple life and potential military threat is the most jarring. It's impossible, though, to think troublesome political thoughts when the birds are singing and the sun is an orange flash on a pewter sea.By the mind the world is led, by the mind the world is drawn.Koreans drink pots and pots of tea. For Buddhist monks the Dado Tea ceremony is a solemn ritual that clears the mind and rejuvenates the body. The plain pottery tea service is laid out on hewn chunks of pine in a sunlit room. Seunim pours out four different kinds of green tea. Look at it, observe its colour and smell - don't just drink it like sake, she tells us.We drink cup after fragrant cup. Nothing is wasted. Used tea leaves are good as a facial scrub, or fried in sesame oil as a vegetable.A young Singaporean woman slips inside the room, a little late. She's mastered the 108 bows. For days she creaks around like a bandy-legged cowboy, but she's stretched her boundaries as well as her body, and she's smiling

Russian Buddhists worship Blue Wooden Rooster
02/09/2005 13:18
Today Russian Buddhists celebrate the official beginning of the New Year of Blue Wooden Rooster. The holiday symbolizes cleansing of one's souls, the perfect time to rid oneself of sins, imperfections and troubles.
The last couple of days Buddhist temples throughout Russia have been conducting divine worshipping ceremonies along with the so-called "dugjuuba" ceremony. During the latter ceremony Buddhists would light ritual fires rights after the sunset and burn small pieces of dough or fabric in them, thus ridding themselves of all the misfortunes.
The actual New Year is commemorated with grand festivities. Well-being and prosperity prayers are usually accompanied by theatrical ceremonies; local chefs mesmerize the public with their culinary masterpieces.
In Buddhism, chronology starts from the moment of Buddha's physical death, his departure to Nirvana. It is virtually impossible to determine the exact date of the event; various traditions present various accounts. It is known however that Buddha"s earthly existence is dated between 623 and 380 BC and it is also known that he was 80 years old at the time Buddha reached Nirvana.
This year is the year of Blue Wooden Rooster. The other day, head of Russia's traditional sanghi Hambo-Lama Damba Ayusheev congratulated everyone with the holiday and wished them to "keep the seeds of prosperity" in the year to come.
"It is considered that the New Year begins at 6:00 am," stated a spokesman of Russia's Buddhist sangha in Moscow to a RIA "Novosti" correspondent. "On New Year"s Eve Buddhists gather in temples and pray for the well-being, prosperity and peace in the world. In addition, faithful people also order public prayers for the upcoming year," noted Sanzhei-Lama. It is customary for Buddhists to visit each other in the morning. According to the lama, people can enjoy not only fruits and vegetables on this day but also "white" (dairy) foods and meat (lamb and beef). Buddhist regions do not consume poultry, states the lama.
As far as the presents are concerned, souvenirs and images of Buddha are among the most popular ones.
There are nearly one million Buddhists in Russia. They primarily reside in Kalmykia, Buryatia, Tuva, Altai region, and Chitinsky to name a few.
"Sagaalgan" is one of the most favorite holidays of Buryats and other Mongol-speaking nations. Sagaalgan, or the holiday of the White Month, is celebrated since XIII century by the order of Chinghis Khan's grandson Khubilai Khan and symbolizes the beginning of spring. "White month" refers to the beginning of a new life.

Mountains and monasteries of India's 'Little Tibet' attract trekkers and seekers
By Elizabeth Dalziel, Associated Press

LEH, India — They are trekkers and seekers, backpackers and Buddhist followers, and they come here for both spiritual sustenance and for rugged hikes amid ancient monasteries and snowcapped mountains.
This northern region of India known as Ladakh is a cold desert plateau, a western extension of the Tibetan Plateau in the great Himalayas, on the frontier with China. Local residents include Tibetan refugees who crossed into the Indian Himalayas through what is known as "the roof of the world" and settled into an area now known as Little Tibet.
Monasteries perched atop small hills above the valley attract surprisingly large groups of Western tourists, including Europeans, North and South Americans, and a steady stream of young Israelis looking to decompress after completing their military service. These visitors come both to immerse themselves in Buddhist teachings and to master the rugged terrain. But hiking and reaching the temples is far easier for the locals, who are acclimated to altitudes that range from 11,500 to 23,400 feet above sea level.
The tourists are easy to spot, clad in Bermuda shorts and toting cameras, sunglasses, colorful hats and water bottles as they fight the punishing sun while thronging to admire the marvels of craftsmanship on display at the monasteries, known as Gompas. In contrast, the locals' attire includes traditional outfits crafted from yak wool, long gowns or jackets adorned with turquoise jewelry.
The most revered contemporary lama in Ladakh, known as Drukpa, draws a large following (both Western and local). He is believed to be the 12th reincarnation of Naropa, a revered Buddhist scholar from the 10th century who is credited with introducing Buddhism to the region.
This summer, the Hemis monastery near the town of Leh hosted an extravaganza held once every 12 years: The unveiling of a Tanka, a tall building-size traditional religious painting on silk. The painting is dedicated to a reincarnation of the 11th Gyalwang Drukpa. The Tanka was accompanied by masked monks representing Buddhist deities performing tantric dances.
But the Hemis event was just one of many annual religious festivals that draw both tourists and the Buddhist faithful, who take part in rituals — known as puyas — with great fervor. These religious adherents include khampa nomads, who are believed to be the area's original settlers; the Brokpas, the last Buddhist Indo-Iranian tribe left in the world; and the Tibetan immigrants who now populate the area.
Ladakh is also considered safe for travelers, having been spared the violence that routinely mars the peace in the nearby insurgency-affected Kashmir Valley. (Ladakh is part of the Jammu-Kashmir state but is away from the Kashmir Valley, the hub of the insurgency.)
Whether your interest lies in rugged mountaineering, a spiritual journey or a trek with nomads, Ladakh's ethereal beauty is guaranteed to enchant.

By Cristina Gair/ Post Independent, ngày 4 thang 2, 2005

Meditation takes mind off matters of society

By Cristina Gair / Post IndependentFebruary 4, 2005

As cell phones ring, e-mail piles up, and work and off hours blend together, it is nearly impossible to stay centered in today's world."Meditation is so valuable for the American world," said Lama Dawa Zangpo, a Buddhist teacher who studied meditation three years in Oregon. He explained that the hectic, fast-paced lifestyle and must-do attitude of most Americans puts them under pressure and provides a healthy dose of stress. The Consumer Health Information Service, a service of the Hawaii Medical Library, defines meditation as "a technique of mind control that often leads to a feeling of inner calm and peacefulness, and may result in profound experiences of self-realization and transcendental awareness.""Some people realize that 'Something is missing from my life,' and they meditate trying to find peace," Zangpo said. Many of these same people do decide to embrace Buddhist teachings after participating, but it is a process that occurs not as an overnight conversion, he said.Being in a state of meditation is an art form in that the mind is challenged to focus and clear. "Normally we are distracted and paying attention to all that is happening around us," Zangpo said. "Meditation is a way of training the mind so you don't get pulled in so many directions."Buddhist meditation is just one religion that uses this technique. "The discipline is found in many other religions including Christianity, Hinduism and Islam, and it is also advocated by many practitioners of holistic health for its impact on stress-related disease," according to CHIS. You can also undertake meditation on your own by getting a book on the subject and heading for the mountains, so give yourself the permission to find peace and contentment over the weekend.
