Peace, hope and unity

PORT ARTHUR - Wielding a long-stemmed red rose like a paintbrush, the Rev. Thich Huyen Viet bathed a gleaming, golden baby Buddha on Sunday during the Buu Mon Buddhist Temple Vesak celebration.
Dipping the bloom in a clear bowl of water, Viet stroked water along the statue as a chorus of Buddhist chants resonated in the background. More than 20 venerable Buddhist monks and nuns formed a semicircle around the statue, and each took their turn with the flower. Members of the congregation and audience followed.

Happy birthday, Buddha.

Vesak is the most revered day in the Buddhist tradition, representing not only Buddha's birth, but also the time of his enlightenment and later his death and is celebrated by Buddhists of all nationalities and traditions, Viet said.
Bathing the baby Buddha in water signifies communion with Buddha and spiritual renewal, Viet said. It is washing the slate clean for a new beginning.
"This occasion is very, very old," Viet said. "Through it (the bathing ceremony) we can touch the very best things of Buddha - peace, hope, happiness."
More than 800 people packed the pews and lined the aisles of the temple, joining the Buddhist congregation and leaders of the religious community in embodying a Buddhist ideal of unity.
Conducted mostly in Vietnamese, language barriers did not impede the delivery of the message that sharing the wisdom of Buddha's life and teachings can bring people together while fostering unity among all branches of the religious community.
"Buddha is what we would call an example to the world," said Rabbi Barbara Metzinger of the Temple Emanuel in Beaumont. "There are many similarities between Judaism and Buddhism."
Bishop Curtis Guillory of the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont spoke to those assembled about the importance of forging an alliance between religious communities, remembering the legacy of the late Pope John Paul II.
"He made great strides bringing people of different religious groups together," Guillory said. "Together we can work together and make a better world."
Several more visiting dignitaries spoke during the Vesak service, including among others, state Rep. Hubert Vo, D-Houston, who is the first person of Vietnamese heritage to serve in the Texas House of Representatives.
In addition to the ceremony in the temple, the lotus gardens were open to the public for tours both Saturday and Sunday.
An oasis hidden behind a wall of bamboo, the lotus gardens are the creation and the work of Viet. More than 1,000 people wandered along the sweetly fragrant walkways, through lush foliage to admire the soaring lotus blooms during the seventh annual garden opening, temple secretary Linda Tran said.
"Today was a wonderful opportunity for me to visit a Buddhist temple, tour the gardens and learn something about an different culture," said Marie Heinrich Hayden, a visitor from Huntsville. "The chanting was beautiful, melodic. And the lotus flowers, I had no idea that you could stay in the slime and rise and be beautiful."
Hayden hit upon one of the lotus flower's most important lessons expressed in the Buddhist saying "the lotus grows in the mud but does not smell of the mire," Viet said.
Margaret Ann Randall, a Beaumont resident, is a repeat visitor to the temple and the gardens. It is an annual event she tries not to miss.
"Each year the gardens seem beautiful," Randall said. "This time I learned even more about the beautiful lotus flower and I'm eager, now, to know more about all of it."
