Phật Giáo Phát triển tại Ðức Quốc

Minh Hạnh dịch từ tờ DW-WORLD.DE
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,1231623,00.html

Buddha Enjoys Boom in Germany

DW-WORLD.DE
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,1231623,00.html

Increasing numbers of Germans are switching off their worries along with their mobile phones and immersing themselves in Buddha's teachings.
It's a tranquil scene repeated every evening at Hamburg's Buddhist Center, one of the largest in the Germany.
Around a hundred Germans, among them doctors, architects and harried advertising executives, arrive at the building, take off their shoes, switch off their mobile phones and settle down on cushions arranged on the floor of a large light-filled room to meditate.
The atmosphere is relaxed, some hold rosaries in their hands, others look expectantly at pictures of the Buddha on the wall. "We're reflecting about cause and effect, about the fact that we decide ourselves what happens in our lives," 43-year-old Juliane, who leads the meditation, told the news agency dpa.
Juliane said that many who came to the center were disappointed by Christianity but were still looking for a sense in life. "They realize that making money and consuming things isn't everything," she said.
"We tend to link our happiness to conditions, to outer things. Buddhism teaches us that those things don't make us happy, rather it's our attitude to them that does," she added.
The Hamburg center, which follows the teachings of 63-year-old Danish Buddhist leader and former boxer Ole Nydahl, is just one among several Buddhism centers that have cropped up in the country in recent years.
Books both by the Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhism's spiritual leader, and by other Buddhists on topics ranging from healthy living to making money are turning up on bestseller lists. Even the country's sensationalistic tabloid Bild recently featured sayings by the Dalai Lama in its headlines. The eastern religion is enjoying an unprecedented boom in Germany.
German celebrities who have embraced Buddhism, such as singer Nina Hagen, actor Ralf Bauer and soccer player Mehmet Scholl, have increased the 2,500-year-old religion's visibility. Its emphasis on inner peace is all the more relevant in a country made unsure of itself as its economy falters, unemployment rises and questions hover over the future of its pension and social security systems.
"Buddhism is becoming increasingly attractive as an alternative to materialism," Hamburg-based German indologist Hans Gruber said recently. "It's the subtle unease about a culture, about a progressive economic and lifestyle system that has conclusive answers to everything, but can't do anything about inner turmoil."
Since the German government doesn't keep any statistics on the religion, no one knows the exact number of Buddhists in country. The German Buddhist Union (DBU), an umbrella organization of 52 groups, estimates there are around 100,000 Buddhists of German origin in the country.
In addition, a further 120,000 foreigners -- mainly Vietnamese and Thai -- living in the country are practicing Buddhists.
What is clear however is that the number of Buddhist communities in the country are steadily rising: from 15 groups at the beginning of the 1970s to over 600 today.
Buddhism, however, is hardly a new phenomenon in Germany.
The eastern religion first surfaced when Karl Seidenstücker founded the world's first "white" Buddhist congregation in Leipzig in 1903. Shortly after, for the first time a German man became a Buddhist monk.
In 1924, German doctor Paul Dahlke founded the first Buddhist center in a villa north of Berlin. The religion, however, stayed the preserve of elite intellectual circles until the late 1960s.
Then hippies and other spiritual-seekers attracted by eastern wisdom transformed it into a more accessible religion practised in incense-filled rooms in German suburbs.
Much has changed since then.
Today Buddhist communities in Germany are buying up former monasteries and building new meditation halls. In Hamburg's famous red-light St. Pauli district, a group of 40 young Buddhists are turning an old shipyard into a spiritual center.
The Tibetan Center in Hamburg now offers a seven-year study of Buddhism and the religion is now an official subject in some schools in Berlin.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
--------------------------------------

Welcome to VMC, Dhamma Dhara

The Vipassana Meditation Center in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, is one of over 60 international centers and numerous non-center sites where the technique of Vipassana meditation is taught and practiced.

The first ten-day Vipassana courses in the United States were held at rented sites in 1980, and were organized by students of S. N. Goenka of the Vipassana International Academy in Igatpuri, India. Desiring a facility closer to home where Vipassana could be practiced, a small group of American and Canadian students established the first Vipassana meditation center in the United States in 1982. Mr. Goenka named the new center Dhamma Dhara, land of Dhamma. Dhamma Dhara is incorporated as a nonprofit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the state of Massachusetts.

From its modest beginnings as a farm house on eight acres of land, the meditation center has continued to grow. Eight students completed the first ten-day course. Today more than 1,500 students attend over 30 courses each year. Facilities have expanded to include meditation halls, residences and dining rooms on an additional 100 acres. A unique feature of Dhamma Dhara is a meditation pagoda that offers returning students the opportunity to meditate in seclusion.

The center is located two hours west of Boston in a quiet, rural area among sugar maple trees, apple orchards and dairy farms.

----------------------
The Vipassana Meditation Center has been offering meditation courses since 1982. Since that time there has been no charge to course participants. Courses are run solely on a donation basis.

Donations are accepted only from old students, that is, those who have completed at least one course with S. N. Goenka or one of his assistant teachers. This is because they have realized for themselves the benefits of this meditation practice.

Only when new students have completed the course are they considered old students. At the end of their course they are welcome to make a donation, not with the idea of paying for what has been received, but with the understanding that they freely received this practice because others before them have come, received benefit and made a donation.

Each center is financially independent, and these donations are the only source of funding for centers to be able to offer courses in this tradition around the world.
There is no wealthy foundation or individual sponsoring them. Neither the teachers nor the course servers receive any kind of payment for their service. Thus, the spread of this technique is carried out with purity of purpose, free from any commercialism.

Anti-conversion bill worries Christians in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Apr. 29 (FIDES/CWNews.com) - Christians in Sri Lanka, including the local Catholic community are seriously concerned that parliament may approve an anti-conversion bill, the Fides news service reports.

If approved, the bill would cause a radical change of attitude and relations between the different religious communities in Sri Lanka, and it would violate religious freedom and human rights, a local Church source told Fides. Paradoxically, the Fides source said, the bill-- which is to be discussed and voted in the next few days-- is being passed off as a measure to protect religious freedom, when its effects are the complete opposite.

The bill outlaws any personal change of religion under circumstances which can be considered immoral or illegal. Envisaged punishment includes a heavy fine, and up to seven years in prison. It falls to a magistrate to judge whether a person's decision to change religion was the result of trickery and "proselytizing" and is therefore illegal.

Church leaders in Sri Lanka are particularly concerned about the interpretation of "proselytizing" as contained in the legislation, because some critics of the Christian presence in the country claim that social and charitable work is a form of "proselytizing."

The bill was introduced by nine Buddhist monks who are members of parliament and of a fundamentalist religious party, Jathika Hela Urumaya. A similar bill was introduced last year, but ruled unconstitutional by the country's highest court. A slightly amended form of the bill is now under discussion.
