Thưởng ngoạn hoa đăng sắc màu muôn vẻ
By CHIN MUI YOON, The Star, February 23, 2005

Seeing the light, in more ways than one

By CHIN MUI YOON, The Star, February 23, 2005

Jenjarum, Selangor (Malaysia) – THE quiet of Jenjarom has been “disturbed’’ in recent days by busloads of visitors who come to the Dong Zen Fo Guang Shan Temple during the Chinese New Year season.
Some of the 18 arhats in the lovely garden.
The magnificent structure and its beautiful garden on a 6.4ha site is venue, of the festive celebrations, themed CNY Light Gala for Peace and Flower Exhibition. They feature hundreds of flowers and more than 2,000 lanterns.
Fo Guang Shan (FGS) is an international Buddhist monastic order, originating from Taiwan and led by the Venerable Master Hsing Yun. There are 17 centres in Malaysia with the headquarters at the temple near Banting.

This year’s celebration is the temple’s second grand function. Last year’s Chinese New Year festivities was its first.
“As it is a new year, we want to promote happiness and light through the lanterns, colours and exhibits on Buddhism,’’ said Abbot Hui Xian.
“The lights, flowers and the series of humanistic and Buddhism exhibits and activities signify co-existence of nature and life.”
Ven Jue Wen, who is administrator of the Dong Zen Institute of Buddhist Studies, located on the temple grounds, said the temple’s main purpose was to enhance and propagate Buddhism.
“Such grand celebrations unite our members and well-wishers who spend the Chinese New Year season volunteering their time and services at the temple,” she said.
“It is hard to calculate the cost of organising the celebrations, as many of our disciples and devotees have donated and sponsored the items from soil and gravel to the flowers and food.
“We have hung over 20,000 lanterns in more than 30 designs as light is especially important. It symbolises brightness and wisdom.”
Jue Wen said 230,000 people visited the temple last year and about 600,000 visitors have already done so since the celebrations were launched Feb 8.
The main FGS Cultivation Centre is draped in a curtain of huge red lanterns that is breathtaking during the night. Around the garden are scenic attractions, each with its own meaning, teaching and story of the Buddhism faith.
The beauty of the temple’s spacious green lawns is a lure in itself. While children bask in the splendour of the floral gardens and magnificent arches, the adults offer prayers to the statues of Buddha.

The Eighteen Arhats Area is the most photographed as the twin rows of cherry blossom trees with their pretty, pink blooms make for a beautiful picture. Though artificial, the trees emit an aura of Spring. Each branch is adorned with dainty, paper lanterns in varying colours.
Beneath the trees are stone statues of the 18 Arhats, saints or sages who have attained enlightenment following the teachings of Buddha.
Near the trees is the Pureland of Flowers and its 33 stone statues of novice monks amid rings of colourful plants and blooms.
The Lumbini Garden is devoted to Sakyamuni Buddha. Here, a life-like animatronics figure of Prince Siddharta stands amid flowerbeds, stone paths, a lotus pond and the Lapis Lazuli Tower.
The tower appears as a transparent pagoda during the day. By night it glows in iridescent colours. The tower is named after the Medicine Buddha and the transparency signifies the radiance of Dharma’s teachings.
One of the temple’s most frequented areas is the Main Shrine. Inside sits a 5.4m tall statue of Buddha in bronze. Eight other bronze carvings line the walls, each depicting the Buddha’s life from birth to his achieving Nirvana.
Four exhibitions are held on the temple grounds during the festive season. Among them are, a Book Fair that features journals on Buddhism and health, a Light of Art exhibition that has 60 table lamps from Taiwan and designed with Buddhism characteristics.
There is also an Artistic Exhibition that features works such as calligraphy, sculpture, carving, paintings and pottery by 100 local artists.
The Fo Guang Shan Temple is open daily from 10am to 10pm on weekdays and till 11pm on weekends until March 6. After that date, it is open from 9am to 7pm from Tuesdays to Sundays.
The temple is located at PT2297, Jalan Sungai Buaya, Sungai Jarom, Jenjarom, Kuala Langat, Selangor. For details, call 03-3191 1533, 3191 1593 or 7877 6533 or visit

Xi’an Wild Goose Pagoda

World Travel Net, May 15, 2004

Xian, China -- Wild Goose Pagoda, located at the southern end of the Great Compassion Temple, has become a symbol of Xi’an, a former historical capital of China.
Wild Goose Pagoda was built for Monk Tang Sanzang to organize and translate the Buddhist scriptures that he brought back from India. Wild Goose Pagoda was originally named Goose Pagoda after a similar pagoda in India. Later on, a smaller Goose Pagoda was built inside the Blessings Temple of Changan City. In order to distinguish between the two, people call the one in the Great Compassion Temple Wild Goose Pagoda and the one in the Blessings Temple Small Goose Pagoda.
Wild Goose Pagoda is built on a 16-foot high, 147-foot square platform. It is a squared-shape pagoda with seven-floors and is approximately 210 feet tall. The bottom floor covers an 82 square foot area. The whole structure is made of solid bricks with a circular staircase to the top. Each floor has four arch gates, one on each side. From the top, the entire city of Changan lays revealed before your eyes.
The bottom floor has a stone gate decorated with fine engravings of Buddha statues. It is said that they were painted by Mr. Yan Liti, a well-known Chinese artist from Tang Dynasty. Two stone tablets are mounted inside brick cages along the two sides of the southern entrance door. One tablet is engraved with the, “Preface of the Great Tang Sanzang Scriptures,” while the other is engraved with Emperor Tang Gaozong’s “Notes on the Preface of the Great Tang Sanzang Scriptures.” Both of them were from the calligraphy of Mr. Zhu Suiliang, one of the four most famous Chinese calligraphers at the beginning of China’s Tang Dynasty. The tablets are bordered with beautiful and vivid vine-like designs. The pagoda preserves some important artifacts of calligraphy, painting and scriptures from China’s Tang Dynasty. Through the years of the Tang Dynasty, most of the temples were destroyed by war. The Wild Goose Pagoda is the only one that remains standing until today.Wild Goose Pagoda was originally only five-stories high. It was first remodeled by Queen Wu Zetian in the Tang Dynasty and this was followed by several other major facelifts. The pagoda has an overall appearance of a cone-shaped building but each floor has a square design. The pagoda is made of gray bricks that imitate wooden columns and borders. It is regarded as one of the masterpieces among the Buddhist temples.
Great Compassion Temple is the most magnificent temple in Changan City. It was built by order of Princess Li Zhi of the Tang Dynasty. Monk Tang Sanzang was the head administrator and was in charge of the effort to translate the Buddhist scriptures. He also oversaw the construction of Wild Goose Pagoda.
Inside the temple a bell tower and a drum tower face each other. The bell and drum were used to send messages for people to follow. The old saying, “Bell charms at dawn and drum beats at dusk,” gives a perfect description of the Buddhist lives at the temple. At the east side of the temple a 3-meter-tall bell, weighing approximately 15,000 kg (16.5 tons) hangs right in the middle of the bell tower. Traditionally, newly promoted officials for the imperial court would visit this temple and leave their signatures at the tower. This is the well-known “Wild Goose Pagoda signature.”
Other famous artists in Tang Dynasty such as Wu Daozi and Wang Wei also contributed masterpieces to the temple. Unfortunately these relics have vanished before our time. Only the ones on the beams and frames over the doorways are kept today. The most precious piece is the engraved picture, “Palace” on the beam of the west doorway.
A group of smaller pagodas with the tombs of monks were built at the southeast side of the Wild Goose Pagoda. Six of them were built in Qing Dynasty. The centerpiece, “The Great Hall of Solemnity” with clay statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is the place where monks chant Buddhist scriptures, while the “Law Court” is used to interpret and learn Buddhist scriptures. A bronze statue of Buddha Amitabha resides inside the “Law Court.”

Viết bởi ky' giả Yomiuri Shirmbun

<<>>Visitors to Koganji temple clean the Goddess of Mercy statue with white cloths.

Sugamo features healing statues, hot spots for granny
Yomiuri Shimbun, May 27, 2003

Japan -- Koganji temple, better known as Togenuki Jizoson, was built in 1596 in Edoyushima, in what is now the southeastern section of Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. The temple was moved to its current location in Sugamo, Toshima Ward, in 1891.
Three major Buddhist services called Taisai, featuring chantings of the Grand Prajna Paramita Sutra, take place on the 24th of January, May and September. Visitors flock to the shrine on these days, stretching out their hands to touch the monks' robes in the belief that illness and trouble will be kept at bay.
Legend has it the name Togenuki Jizo originated with a maid working in the home of a feudal lord who accidentally swallowed a needle. However, upon gulping down a portrait of the Koganji temple's guardian deity of children, she safely regurgitated the needle. Since then, it has been believed that applying a piece of Japanese paper measuring four centimeters high by 1.5 centimeters across imprinted with a portrait of the deity to an injury will heal it.
A statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, stands in the temple precincts. Washing the part of the statue corresponding to an ailing body part is reputed to cure the ailment.
Visitors to the temple once washed the statue with tawashi scrub brushes, but the abrasion gradually wore the statue down. The original was replaced by the current statue, and nowadays visitors clean it using white cloths.Located close to the temple is the Jizo-dori avenue shopping area, which caters mainly to elderly customers and is commonly called Obaa-chan no Harajuku (Grannies' Harajuku). Fairs held on the 4th, 14th and 24th of each month attract crowds of elderly shoppers from all corners of Tokyo to the area.

Xinhhuanet, ngày 3/5/2003

<<>>Taoist temples in Mt. Hengshan

Monks, nuns take up new roles on Buddhist mountain

Xinhuanet, May 3, 2003

CHANGSHA, China -- After centuries of Buddhist worship on Mt. Hengshan in southern China's Hunan Province, monks and nuns are adding tourism services to their daily chores.
One of China's Buddhist holy mountains, Mt. Hengshan has attracted increasing numbers of tourists and Buddhist disciples toits vast monasteries every year.
Though some feel a little uneasy about the changes, most monks and nuns on Mt. Hengshan welcome their new life.
"Buddhists in China have three excellent traditions which include religious meditation and farming, academic research, and exchanges with the outside world," said Master Shi Weizheng, who runs the Buddhist Zhusheng (Chinese for "saint blessing") Monastery on Mt. Hengshan.
In China, monks and nuns in Buddhist monasteries used to make asimple living from disciples' almsgiving and agricultural cultivation.
"We Buddhists still have to keep up this fine tradition," said Master Weizheng, who is also vice president of the Buddhist Association of Hunan Province.
However, the Buddhist Master also said monks and nuns should regard tourism as a new means to achieve self-reliance under new circumstances.
Monasteries on Mt. Hengshan began to offer meals and accommodation to visitors and lay Buddhists in recent years as increasing numbers of people asked to stay over to experience for themselves the life led by monks and nuns.
Meanwhile, tea cafes and shops selling souvenirs such as Buddhist scriptures and badges have also opened in these monasteries.
With the support of local religious management and tourism departments, Zhusheng Monastery invited dozens of tourists from across the country from April 21 to serve as temporary monks and nuns in the monastery.
Monks and nuns not only live a self-sufficient life with income from tourism, but donate large amounts of money to charity, said local official Liu Hanqing.
The Zhusheng Monastery also surprised the Buddhist society in arare and bold move earlier this month when it appointed Professor Zheng Yan, Dean of the Tourism School of Hunan Normal University, as its image ambassador to further promote religious tourism.
Some people fear that the new business approach will disturb the tranquillity of the sacred Buddhist sites, saying that monks and nuns would be led astray by worldly trifles.
But Master Shi Weizheng said the unique buildings, Buddhist statues, paintings and music are the common wealth of humankind, which would certainly lure large number of tourists."Such opening activities will better carry forward the deep Buddhist culture," Master Weizheng added.

Chủng tử Phật giáo đang nảy mầm ở phía tây Châu Âu

By Johnathan Schroder, Enfield and Haringey Independent, Feb 24, 2005

Seed of Buddhism now growing in UK

Edmonton, UK -- Edmonton has become the unlikely home for a sacred ancient sapling, revered by Buddhists. More than 100 worshippers gathered at the Buddhist Meditation Centre in Oxford Road on Saturday, as a cutting from the sacred Bo Tree of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, thought to be the oldest tree in the world, was placed on the altar to celebrate the centre's first anniversary.
The tree in Sri Lanka is believed to have been grown from a sapling taken from a tree in India, under which the Lord Buddha gained enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago.
Centre devotee Christie Weeratunge tended to the young tree at his house in Croyland Road from Tuesday until Saturday, which he described as a great honour.
He said: "The ceremony went very well and was exciting as it is unusual to take a sapling from the tree in Sri Lanka.
"It will be kept on the altar and preserved in a glass box."
The sapling was brought to the UK by the Venerable Alawwa Nandaloka Maha Thero, a member of parliament for the Gampaha district on the island of Sri Lanka.
While many ethnic Buddhists', from countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand and Tibet, place great importance on relics such as the sapling, Jayamitra, from the London Buddhist Centre explained that Western Buddhism is very different.
He added: "We don't like to give relics too high a place, and see the central tenet of Buddhism as the practice of loving kindness and awareness.
"Although we use things like Buddha figures as a form of devotion, they are not in place of one's own effort."

Minister pledges to improve Buddhist education
Lanka Daily News, Feb 26, 2005

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- Buddha Sasana, Public Security Law and Order Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake said he proposes to appoint qualified teachers to teach the Buddha Dhamma in schools to improve the standard of Buddhist education.
"Such teachers would be required to sit for a Dharmacharya examination and acquire a sound knowledge of the Buddha Dhamma," he said as guest at the presentation of awards and certificates to Dhamma school teachers of the Ratnapura district at the Ratnapura Town Hall on February 12.The Minister said one of the biggest drawbacks they had experienced is the lack of suitably knowledgeable qualified teachers in the Buddha Dhamma to teach in schools under the normal education system. They had to admit their drawbacks and rectify them. He said he would therefore propose to appoint teachers who would gain knowledge through a Dharmacharya examination.Wickramanayake said if the good work done by the Dhamma schools in moulding the lives of people in the correct path from a young age has to be sustained, they have to improve the teaching of Buddhism in the normal education system as well."The Dhamma school system was first introduced by Col. Olcott in August 1895. He introduced this system after seeing the erosion of the age old values and cultural heritage that nurtured civil society. It is when the country was being engulfed by alien cultures due to foreign domination that the Dhamma schools concept started", the Minister said.Wickramanayake said today there are 8,600 Dhamma schools with 61,000 teachers and a Dhamma school student population of 22 lakhs."Despite the large number of Dhamma schools, there had not been an appreciable result obtained in restoring of our age old cultural and human values according to reports. It is therefore necessary to improve education on the Buddha Dhamma in ordinary schools as well as through Dhamma schools further," he said. The Minister said it is due to the sacrifice, dedication and commitment of the lay and Bhikkhu teachers that the Dhamma schools concept had nourished through the years. Sacrificing their time and energy they are doing a voluntary service which should be admired by all.Wickramanayake said as Minister, he would not approve that Dhamma school teachers should be given a salary reducing it to the level of an ordinary job.If a monthly salary is given, the noble concept of the Dhamma school education would suffer. Instead of salaries they propose to give various other benefits such as uniforms to Dhamma school teachers, grant of special awards, opportunities for higher education, health and insurance benefits, appointments as Justice of the Peace etc.Wickramanayake said there were several suggestions made for the further development of the Dhamma School system."One suggestion was to stop tutorial classes at least till 1 p.m. on Sundays."The other was to set up Operational Centres at district level to manage Dhamma schools," he said. Wickramanayake wholeheartedly supported this proposal of the Maha Sangha and would soon visit every district to set up these Operational Centres.Commenting on the large aid that has flowed into the country as tsunami assistance, the Minister also deplored the action of some to import unwanted and harmful goods to the country as tsunami aid such as helicopters, body armour, ammunition. He said the people should guard themselves against such treacherous acts which would undermine the country's security.

Ancient Buddhist city uncovered in Afghanistan

Villagers in Afghanistan have uncovered a lost Buddhist city thought to date back to the 2nd Century.
The city, known locally as Kaffir Got, is buried under sand in a remote part of southern Afghanistan.
Unesco officials have appealed for the area to be guarded to stop the site being looted by illegal traders.
The
Sunday Times reports archaeologists hope to uncover a reclining Buddha, similar in size to ones blown up by the Taliban last year.
Robert Knox, head of the oriental department at the British Museum, said: "Kaffir Got is a dramatic discovery, vital to the future cultural life of the country."
He said the discovery may radically rewrite the history books. The ancient city was probably built by the Buddhist Gandharan civilisation, which until now had been thought to exist only in parts of northern Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The newspaper says a black charcoal line in the sand indicates the city may have been destroyed by fire and then abandoned.
Jim Williams, from Unesco, wants the 20-square-mile site to be guarded. He said: "Without protection, it will be reduced to rubble and a place of national importance will have been destroyed."
Experts say artefacts from illegal excavations are already finding their way onto the black market.
