Thiền định làm cho bạn an vui.

Temple offers Buddhists a place of peace
The sanctuary welcomes followers of Buddhism and those who would like to know more about it.

by Debbie Barr, Orlando Sentinel, September 1, 2005
Kissimmee (Florida) ── Like many people, Surapol Pongratananukul of Kissimmee copes with the hustle and bustle of modern life on a daily basis.
The native of Thailand, however, finds inner peace through the basic principles of Buddhism, a religion of right living and purity of mind laid out by Siddhartha Guatama, the "Buddha," more than 2,500 years ago.

Squeezing in even five minutes a day of prayer and meditation in the Buddhist tradition brings him solace, he said.

"Everyone in the world has problems, suffering," said Pongratananukul, who moved from Thailand to Kissimmee in 1980. The meditation brings peace to your mind, he said. "It makes you happy."

To practice his religion and that of his ancestors, Pongratananukul, 56, has been a regular visitor at the Wat Florida Dhammaram Buddhist temple in Kissimmee since its opening in 1993.

The temple, founded by a Buddhist monastery in Thailand, is the largest of three in Central Florida and serves about 1,000 families locally and out-of-state.

Pongratananukul said he makes weekly visits to the Kissimmee temple on his day off and also accompanies his wife on Mondays when it is her turn to deliver the late-morning meal to the six monks and abbot who reside there. The women in the congregation take turns bringing food to the temple.

The compound is a sanctuary among giant oaks on a 7.6-acre stretch of land. It consists of a main chapel, several shrines, a Sunday school and Thai language and cultural center for children, a fellowship building with kitchen facilities, a monks' residence and a memorial to the Buddha's life.

Inside the main chapel of the temple sits a gilded 15-foot statue of the Buddha surrounded by hundreds of colorful flowers and offerings. The walls are lined with 33 ornately decorated panels made by Thai artisans.

Resident abbot Than Chaokhun Phra Vijitrdhammapani, who has overseen the temple since its opening 12 years ago, said the temple welcomes all Buddhists from across the world as well as people simply interested in learning about Buddhism. The temple, which is equipped with a computer learning station and wide-screen television for DVD viewing, also provides resources and materials for education about the religion.

A native of Thailand, Pongratananukul was raised with the principles of the Theravada branch of the religion, which is practiced in Southeast Asian countries that include Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Laos. The Mahayana branch is more prevalent in East Asian countries such as eastern China, Japan and Korea. Major centers for Mantrayana branch followers are in the Himalayas, Mongolia and Japan. The Zen branch is practiced mostly in Japan.

Vijitrdhammapani said the Theravada school, followed at the temple, is the most conservative to Buddha's teachings and strictest in terms of interpretation.

"The Theravada are original Buddhism. We keep all of Buddha's teaching," said the abbot, who, like the other monks at the temple, lives a chaste life with minimal possessions.

He said that while there are several sects of Buddhism, all are rooted in the basic teachings of the Buddha, who was born Siddhartha Gautama in the Himalayas of Nepal about 563 B.C.

Buddha set forth that craving or selfish desire is the root of discontent, while relinquishment of craving leads to awakening and the release of karma, the universal law of cause-and-effect that propels reincarnation.

The five precepts of Buddhism -- no killing, no stealing, no lying, no adultery or misuse of sex and no indulgence in alcohol or other mind-altering substances -- are life skills to be practiced to keep on the path to enlightenment.

In July Theravada Buddhists celebrated Asalha Puja, or Dhamma Day, to commemorate Buddha's first sermon near Benares, India, and the ordination of his first disciples.

Vijitrdhammapani said that with lifetimes of practice, anyone can become a "Buddha" or an enlightened soul.

The temple, at 2421 Old Vineland Road in Kissimmee, is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Chanting and meditation sessions are offered twice daily and a weekly sermon is offered at 1 p.m. Sunday. Basic meditation classes and techniques on concentration are available every Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 407-397-9552 or visit watflorida.org.

Air taxi service to Buddhist shrines in Bihar, UP soon
PTI, Sept 3. 2005
PATNA, India -- In a bid to attract foreign and domestic tourists, the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) has proposed introduction of an air taxi service to important Buddhist shrines in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

"Bihar has a huge and inadequately exploited potential for pilgrimage tourism. To attract tourists, both foreign and domestic, we have sent a proposal to the Centre for introduction of an air taxi service and we expect a positive response soon," BSTDC Ma naging Director, Mr Anand Kishor, said.

The proposed service, targeting upmarket tourists, would link Bodh Gaya, Rajgir and Vaishali in Bihar and Sarnath, Varanasi and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

"We want to offer upmarket and quality service to our customers so that they can have a hassle-free visit to shrines on the Buddhist circuit as there are many people, particularly foreign tourists, who want to avoid a road journey given their poor condit ion in both Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh," Mr Kishor said.

"We would like the UP government to be a partner in this enterprise but in case they are unwilling we can have deals with private parties," Mr Kishor said.

Examine spirituality as it relates to science
By DANA DUGAN, Idaho Mountain Express Staff Writer, Sept 2, 2005

The Dalai Lama's new book to be released next week

Wood River Valley, Idaho (USA) -- His Holiness the Dalai Lama is not only a uniting presence all over the world, he is the author of more than 10 books. His latest is being released by Doubleday's Morgan Road Books two days after his Sept. 11 appearance in the Wood River Valley.

"The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality" is a subject that His Holiness has long studied. Remarkably, it's not such an odd idea that one of the most highly regarded spiritual men in the world is interested in and passionate about science.

Indeed, the Dalai Lama writes that his book is an "effort to explore two important human disciplines for the purpose of developing a more holistic and integrated way of understanding the world around us, one that explores deeply the seen and the unseen, through the discovery of evidence bolstered by reason."

His interests began early. As a small boy, shut away with elderly tutors in the gigantic Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, the young lama spent hours tinkering with the mechanical objects left there by his predecessor, the 13th Dalai Lama, including watches and two film projectors. His fascination with mechanics, science and technology was established then and has long flourished despite his having had no formal education in the sciences.

About a decade after his exile in 1959 he began traveling extensively, and ever since he's enjoyed long friendships with many scientists, including the late renowned philosopher of science Sir Karl Popper, physicist Carl von Weizsäcker and the late quantum physicist David Bohm. He has participated in many conferences on science and spirituality. In 1983, His Holiness met Chilean neuroscientist Dr. Francisco Varela, who, in partnership with Adam Engle, created a unique form of in-depth dialogue between Buddhism and science that has grown into the Mind and Life Institute.

Since the first Mind and Life meeting in 1987, His Holiness has regularly dedicated a week to these biennial meetings. It comes, then, as no surprise to find in the new book that he is astute and learned on the subjects.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama also convenes neuroscientists and Buddhist scholars to define the next steps in the study of the mind and brain. These have typically been intimate meetings at his residence in Dharamsala, India.

Science and Buddhism share a common objective, His Holiness writes. That is to

serve humanity and create a better understanding of the world. Science offers powerful tools for understanding the interconnectedness of all life, he has said.

He writes: "Strictly speaking, in Buddhism scriptural authority cannot outweigh an understanding based on reason and experience. Buddha himself, in a famous statement, undermines the scriptural authority of his own words when he exhorts followers not to accept the validity of his teachings simply on the basis of reverence to him."

He goes on to say that people should test the truth of what is said through "reasoned examination and personal experiment."

Both science and Buddhism are "two investigative traditions." His Holiness is a man deeply rooted in the life of the mind. His spirituality does not encourage him or his followers to convert anyone. Rather, since his message is and always will be compassion, he strongly encourages keeping an open mind at all times.

"The Universe in a Single Atom" shows this concept over and over. It's not an easy read. There are no daily affirmations on the subjects of which His Holiness expounds. Instead, the book is scholarly though chatty and informative. Chapters come with headings such as "Emptiness, Relativity and Quantum Physics," "Evolutions, Karma and the World of Sentience" and "Ethics and the New Genetics."

On His Holiness' desk in Dharamsala sits a figure. It's not a religious icon, but an icon to him nonetheless. It's a plastic model of a brain with detachable labeled components. A gift, it includes a handwritten synopsis of the key points of neurobiology.

Get your head around it. His Holiness has, albeit with some of the best teachers and mentors in the world.
