Seminar on Buddhism
Tribune News Service

Patiala, March 29- The Centre for Buddhist Studies and Guru Gobind Singh Department of Religious Studies, Punjabi University, yesterday organised a UGC-sponsored national seminar on “Buddhism in Punjab: Past and Present”.

It was presided over by Prof J.S. Grewal, former Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Prof K.T.S. Sarao, Head, Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi, delivered the keynote address.

Professor Sarao said Buddhism, which once flourished in North-West India, declined mainly because of the lack of commitment among followers.

Discussing various reasons for the decline and extinction of Buddhism from Punjab, he listed several reasons.

Moral and ethical corruption among monks and nuns, animosity of Brahmins, persecution by Brahminical kings, Muslim invasions and rise of the Mahayana sect were some of the reasons for the decline of Buddhism, he pointed out.

People from lower castes joined the faith and Lord Buddha condemned the discrimination against them, but he never rejected the caste system as such.

He accepted the fact of a fair amount of friction between Brahmins and Buddhists, but it was no more than academic wrestling.

He opined that Buddhism remained mainly an urbanised faith, originating and flourishing only in cities, and its followers did not have the kind of commitment required to perpetuate any faith.

Professor Grewal also inaugurated the Centre for Buddhist Studies. He remarked that Punjab had produced both warriors and saints. It had been a land where Vedas were composed and where Mahayana sect of Buddhism originated and flourished.

Tibet railway seen spreading rat-borne diseases in China

Saturday April 1, 4:19 PM

The completion of the first railway linking Tibet to other Chinese regions could fuel the spread of rat-borne diseases such as plague that mainly affect remote areas of northwest China, according to state media reports.

The railway, which will link the Himalayan region with the rest of China when it opens in summer, could carry infected rats and people to more densely populated areas, China Daily said.

Quoting State Forestry Administration officials, it said the spread of plague was currently under control because of the lack of rail access to remote affected areas in Tibet, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia.

But once the railway was operational, controlling a plague epidemic could prove difficult, it said.

Plague is not a major public health issue in China, with 24 people dying of the disease between 2001 and 2005, according to the official People's Daily's website.

The disease, carried by fleas on rats and marmots, could be controlled with antibiotics but the poor level of health care in remote areas resulted in a fatality rate of 40 to 60 percent, state media said.

The disease is spread to humans via flea bites. Once the bacteria is present in bodily fluids, it can easily spread through the human population.

"This year, we have to do more to prevent plague as the disease is likely to spread to more areas with the operation of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway," said Wu Jian, chief engineer of the administration's department of afforestation.

In China, victims of the disease usually contract it while hunting marmots.

In Nangqen county, in Qinghai province, the disease spread among at least four families in 2004 and killed six people by the time the local centre for disease control was informed, the reports said.

Housewives give new life to Rani Pokhari fish

Himalayan News Service

Kathmandu, April 1:The Kathmandu Metropolitan City may have left the 18th century monument of Rani Pokhari uncared for for donkey’s years, but some Buddhist women of Tibetan origin are refusing to give up.
Today, some dug into their pockets while others broke open their piggy banks and collectively they pooled money to infuse new life into the monument.
The anxious housewives purchased around over 30 tankers of drinking water and poured it into the drying pond, so that they could at least save the fish there.
The pond was drying up at an alarming rate because there was no rain last winter and also because the water level has gone down excessively, as a result of too much underground water extraction and surface sealing around the pond area.
“It was heart-wrenching to see the pond getting so dry. We come here to feed the fish here everyday and we realised that there was hardly any water, only a layer of mud. We hurriedly put our heads together in our locality. This small effort is the result of our confabulations,” said Chhorten Lama, a housewife from Boudha.
Altogether 15 women and two men bought over 30 tankers of water, and dumped the water in the pond. Most of those who did this yeoman’s service are housewives who once had carpet industries but are now idle at home.
Lama said she first asked permission from the guards and they ordered the water tanker owners to bring the water here.
“We did not do it because we are rich, we did it because we thought that our one small effort could save hundreds of fish living in this unfortunate pond,” she said.
Chief of KMC Urban Environment Section Rabin Man Shrestha said there was no way of retaining water during this season because the evaporation continues and there is no precipitation.
“We have been sending two consignments of water per day there, but that is of no help. The only remedy is collection of rainwater,” he said.
