Chùa Phật Giáo ở Layton, Utah, bị dột nước mưa.

By Jamie Lampros, Standard-Examiner, September 17, 2005

Layton Buddhist temple leaking
By Jamie Lampros, Standard-Examiner, September 17, 2005
LAYTON (Utah) ── When it rains, it pours.

Especially at Wat Dhammagunaram. The Buddhist Temple has a major leak in its roof and every time it rains everything gets soaked.

"It's a pretty steady leak when it starts to rain," said Roberta Chase, community liaison. "The carpet gets wet and it just starts soaking everything. We have plastic down right now to temporarily help."

Leaks seem to be an ongoing problem for the temple's towering roof.

Two years ago, there was a different leak. With the help of local donations from businesses and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the leak was repaired, Chase said.

"We really need to replace the roof but we don't even have the funds to make the repair," Chase said.

The cost of the repair would be approximately $47,000.

But that's not the only problem the temple is facing. Layton has just informed them that they must get rid of the septic tank and hook up to a sewer line. That will cost another $20,000.

"When the city lines run within so close to your property, then you have to hook up to the sewer," Chase said. "So, basically we have no choice. Both of these things are very critical. We've held a fundraiser and tried various things to raise money but we aren't having much luck so far."

Wat Dhammagunaram, which means "happy place," was first located in Ogden before moving to its Layton location in 1995.

There are 10 monks who live on the site.

To make a donation, call Chase at 801-966-0639.

Cứu vãn Lông Môn Thạch Quật.
22/9/2005 8:07

Rescuing Longmen Grottoes

22/9/2005 8:07

Image hosted by Photobucket.comInadequate investment and incompetent sculpture specialists may jeopardize the Longmen Grottoes, one of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in central China, preservationists and local experts warned.
Only seven maintenance workers are employed at the ancient site where massive water seepage in the caves is a devastating and ongoing problem. Preservation funds are not available.
The warning came during an international project, sponsored by UNESCO and Japan, to help preserve the Buddhist statues and carvings on cliffs in Luoyang city in Henan Province.
During the past millennium, many of them survived floods, wars, theft and other natural or man-made disasters.
An example of outstanding Buddhist carving craftsmanship, Longmen has more than 2,300 grottoes with 110,000 Buddhist images, over 80 dagobas and 2,800 inscribed tablets.
They are located on cliffs running about 1 kilometer along the Yishui River, 13km south of Luoyang. The site is believed to be where Buddhism was introduced to China during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD).
“Weathering, collapsing rocks and seeping water have posed a threat to the grottoes,” said Li Zhengang, superintendent of the grottoes management.
With US$620,000 earmarked for the project’s second phase, a database of damage to grottoes will be established. Experts will devise the optimum way to pour seepage-proof mortar to fill the cracks inside the grottoes.
Visitors can hear water dripping in every cave during the rainy season and can take months for the drops to stop.
The entire preventive maintenance is expected to be complete in 2007, Li said.
“To stop the damage from water in cracks is our first mission and it is very very difficult.” The Longmen Grottoes management bureau has been plagued by shortage of maintenance technologies, funds and professional talent. Most of its staff of 400 are engaged in tourism services, leaving only seven maintenance professionals.
Li said the current internationally aided project was still in an experimental stage. He said the US$1.26 million from UNESCO only helps “to some extent.” “It takes at least hundreds of millions of yuan to just stop the seeping water alone. ”
The grottoes management bureau took in about 50 million yuan (US$6.16 million) from selling tickets in 2004. But most of the revenue was used for the payroll and daily operation; little was spent on maintenance.
Cracks have been found in each of the 37 major grottoes in Longmen, including 29 inside a single grotto, according to a two-year investigation.
Worse, many of the Buddhist statues or carvings cannot be distinguished due to dust, dirt and grit; nearly half of its niches lack a Buddhist statue due to rampant theft in the past.

Một nơi an bình để viếng thăm, Wat Carolina

By Kristin Boyle, Wilmington Star-News, September 17, 2005

Buddhists invite you for a peaceful visit

By Kristin Boyle, Wilmington Star-News, September 17, 2005

Brunswick (North Carolina) ── Most people in Brunswick County have heard of it. Some might even know where it is. But few have visited Wat Carolina, the Buddhist monastery near Bolivia.

Though "monastery" may conjure up images of monks living off the land, the monks at Wat Carolina live simply and rely wholly on donations to survive. Their days are spent chanting, meditating and studying the many volumes of Buddha?s teachings.

Only three monks, Abbot Phrakru Buddhamonpricha and two novice monks, live on the grounds full time. They wear the traditional yellow-orange Buddhist garb. A groundskeeper also lives at the monastery.

The monastery began in 1987 with a donation from the abbot?s sister, who at the time owned the Ocean Crest Motel. Originally, the monastery consisted of a small house on 21 acres.

Phrakru Buddhamonpricha explains that the Midway Road location was chosen on purpose since the Buddhist path to enlightenment is called The Middle Way.

The house still serves as a temple and resident housing. Construction of a large multipurpose hall has recently been completed, minus a few finishing touches. The hall is part of the abbot?s master plan, which includes future resident housing and a temple.

"Step by step we build the temple from donations. But there are many, many steps," he said.

Monks also receive donations of the tasty variety from Phrakru Buddhamonpricha?s nephew, who owns Thai Peppers restaurant in Southport.

Under Phrakru Buddhamonpricha?s watch, the monastery has added more than buildings. The congregation has increased, with about 30 people regularly attending Sunday meditations and more than 300 attending large celebrations.

A recent ceremony for one of the novices held in the new multipurpose hall attracted attendees from as far away as New York. Like the "visitors welcome" sign marking the entrance, Phrakru Buddhamonpricha welcomes people curious about the monastery or Buddhism to attend a Sunday meditation or one of the upcoming special events.

Services are held in English, with Thai being added to large gatherings. For more information visit www.wat-carolina.com or call 253-4526.

Starting at 10:30 a.m. today, the monks will celebrate the Buddhist holiday of Wansart with lunch, food offerings, a meditation and special ceremony. Wansart Day is considered one of the important festivals of Buddhism and is a time when religious ceremonies are performed to honor deceased relatives.

Loving-Kindness Meditations will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday and again on Dec. 17. The meditations are intended to help to bring harmony to our relationships with others.

Saturday?s meditation will be led by Deborah Welch, who is vice president of the N.C. Buddhist Association and has been a member of Wat Carolina since 1993. Ms. Welch also teaches Kundalini yoga at the Weightless Albatross in Carolina Beach and has incorporated mindfulness meditation and anapanasati, or breath meditation, into the Loving-Kindness Meditations.

The December meditation leader is Cynthia Hill Noll from the Ella Hill Expressive Arts Center on Oak Island. Ms. Hill Noll specializes in cross-cultural healing arts and also teaches in the UNCW Pathways program.

Anyone can attend. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cushions or folding chairs.

Anyone unable to attend one of the events is still welcome to stop by the monastery.

The teachings of Buddha, Phrakru Buddhamonpricha explains, can help achieve peace of mind. In the wake of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, he said, "It is important that we do good. Good gets a good reaction. We cannot let ourselves become angry."

This message reached groundskeeper Shane Huddleston, a graduate of UNC-Wilmington who visited the monastery after returning to Wilmington from a year in Hawaii. Currently he lives at the monastery and one day hopes to study to become a monk. When asked why Buddhism appealed to him, Mr. Huddleston said, "I guess the teachings just made sense to me."

Một người Tây Phương trong ngôi chùa Thái Lan.

Published on September 25, 2005

A Westerner in the wat

Buddhism has changed Jess Koffman’s existence from one of routine drudgery to one of happiness and deeper meaning

Jess Koffman, 29, has willingly opted to give up a modern lifestyle to experience the Buddhist way of peaceful existence. Koffman says Buddhist teachings have helped him distinguish from the mundane and truly substantial aspects of life. He now practises Buddhism intensely because the religion helps him understand how the mind works, and has opened his mind to a new appreciation for life and a deeper sense of happiness.

The Canadian is an ex-actuarial analyst in a Toronto pension company and says the main reason he felt interested in Buddhism was that he was curious about the meaning of life. Koffman was not satisfied with his job, in which he used his background in mathematics. “The money was good but I left because I realised that my mind was not in it,” Koffman says, adding that he never wanted to be in a situation where he found himself among people doing things they did not like.

Koffman decided to turn his back on the West’s frenetic pace and a dull professional life back in Canada to seek peaceful spirituality five years ago.

He felt travelling in Asia could provide him a better opportunity.

“People continue their lives in the same way. I tried not to follow them by just working day after day even though they realise they are not happy and ended up here,” he says. In retrospect, Koffman was an ordinary salaried man and sought knowledge of Buddhism because of his own curiosity about philosophy. Despite his mathematical training, Koffman is also now more and more enthusiastic about philosophy.

“Philosophy is not so different from maths because they are both trying to put the truth into symbols. They both try to find the way to capture the truth. In the beginning I was interested in finding out about the truth of life and after I studied Buddhism I found the logic of Buddhist teachings that can best explain the truth of life,” he says.

In the five years he has been living in the Kingdom, Koffman has become completely engrossed in Buddhism. Though born a Jew, Koffman considers himself a Buddhist now.

“My belief system is far more Buddhist than Jewish,” he says, explaining that he calls himself a Buddhist as he had taken refuge in the Triple Gems – the three values of Buddhism: the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. He is also trying to observe the Five Precepts of Buddhism.

Koffman is enrolled in a master’s degree programme in Buddhist studies at Maha Chulalongkorn Ratchawittayalai Buddhist University. He normally practises Vipassana (insight) meditation, at Wat Mahathat in Bangkok.

Koffman has also been giving training sessions in Buddhist teachings and meditation practices for employees at PTT Public Co, Ltd. where he leads Dhamma discussions designed to help his students to utilise Buddhist teachings in their lives.

“At the session, I talk to my students about their real life experiences and some of their problems.” Koffman tells his students that when they have problems, they should try to understand the impermanence of life.

Mindfulness is one of key principles stressed in his training when he teaches other Buddhist morals. Mindfulness comes from meditation and can be adapted to the real world, Koffman says. By practising Buddhism, Koffman found that you were happier once you understood your mind.

“Everyone can have general mindfulness, which is when we have an idea of an inner awareness, we know what we are doing. When your mindfulness gets strong, you can watch and be aware of your feelings. When we have mindfulness and Buddhist wisdom, we can understand problems, pain, sadness as we will have a new perspective to view the world from and we can change from being a victim to being a witness and can just observe such phenomena,” he says. Those interested in Buddhist meditation should visit Section 5, which is the headquarters of Vipassana meditation in Bangkok.

TIRUPATI: The Oriental Research Institute (ORI) of Sri Venkateswara University has taken up the task of digitisation of the 300-year-old Tripitaka called in Chinese as Ta-min-sam-tsan-shan-chio-mu-lu, a study on several classifications of the Buddha’s works in China, and is planning to launch an exclusive Website for the benefit of Buddhists in India and abroad.

The 40 volumes contain 1,916 books consisting of 8,416 fascicles, most of which are translations from Sanskrit to Chinese language (their originals are not available).

They were presented to the ORI on April 28, 1941, by the then Director of China-Bhavan, Professor Tan Yun-Shan at the instructions of the Chinese Government.

“Tripitaka, the collection of books of Shanghai edition, were made of hand made paper, bounded with camphor boards and can be preserved for hundreds of years “ said the Director of ORI, N Venkataramana Reddy.

The digitisation work will be over within two weeks and will be helpful to the SV University faculty, who are planning to visit China for an international conference in October, said M Prabhakar and E Chandramouli, Assistant Professors of the Telugu Department of SV University.

“Though not the entire text of Tripitaka, we provide comprehensive information and the gist of it will be placed on the website.

It will be of great use to researchers. We welcomed them to the ORI, if they wanted to pursue further study on Tripitaka,” explained J Gnana Prakash Naidu, Curator and Librarian of the Institute.

The Dalai Lama is joining the many who will leave Houston ahead of Hurricane Rita.

Officials at Rice University canceled his two talks scheduled for today because of the storm.

But the Dalai Lama did participate Wednesday in a Houston symposium on Spiritualism and Science in the Modern World.

"It was a miracle" that he came, event chairwoman Gail Gross said.

The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists and the political head of the country's government in exile, is on a tour of the United States that already has taken him to Idaho, Arizona and Austin. He is scheduled to leave Houston this morning.

After Wednesday's symposium at the Westin Galleria, the Dalai Lama briefly attended a VIP reception, greeting his own fans and posing for a group photograph with event volunteers.

"He was very funny, he had a lot of personality," said Jada England, 26, who helped with the event.

In his talk, the Dalai Lama spoke of the relationship between religion and science. Religion, he said, deals with inner peace and offers comfort when people are confronted with situations beyond their control.

"Of course the practical benefit of science to humanity is beyond question," he said. "Flight today is very easy, very convenient because of science, not prayer."

He said he believes that his religion may need to re-examine beliefs disproved by science. "When I say these things, I am curious about the opinion of my senior colleagues in the tradition," he said. "They may be thinking I'm probably going too far in my thinking."

The serious talk included references to ancient texts and Buddhist cosmology. But when taking questions, the tone was lighter.

When a scientist asked whether the Dalai Lama had a list of unsolved problems for humanity, he answered: "No."

After the laughter died down, the Dalai Lama rattled off a list that included the energy crisis, the environment and the gap between rich and poor.

Topping his list was the promotion of human value and a devotion to religious harmony.

"These two things are, I think, my lifelong commitment," he said.
