Posted online: Friday, August 12, 2005 at 0000 hours IST
Arahan which releases in India on August 12 will be the first Korean film that screens commercially in India. What is more, its distributors, Star Entertainment Limited will be releasing the film in India as Arahan (English), Dhoom Dhamaka (Hindi), Akrosham (Tamil) and Kung-Fu Veerulu (Telugu) versions...
Arahan is the term for sainthood in Theravada Buddhism, for which an individual has obtained nirvana by overcoming all attachments and understanding the ‘principles of the universe’. It is also spelled “Nahan” in Korean. When the Chi powers of Maruchi (enlightened Male Master) and Arachi (enlightened Female Master) who have reached the status of the enlightened are joined, they attain the way of Arahan or Arahat as described in Buddhist scriptures.
The movie is based on the “masters” of the secret disciplines of the East Chi, preserving the peace of our world without our knowledge. The story is about the journey of Sang-Hwan as hot-blooded ordinary cop to a “Maruchi.” Sang-hwan became a cop out of his naive desire to bring justice to those who take unfair advantage of their strengths —But the tough reality is that even local gangsters can beat him up. One day; he suddenly encounters a group of strangers “You are destined to become Maruchi! We will teach you how to shoot chi energy from your palms, too.” They are known as the Seven Masters — Thus Sang-hwan is paired with his partner-to-be, Eui-jin, who is destined to become Arachi. Meanwhile, the Master of Absolute Evil — HeugUn (Dark Cloud) has freed himself from his imprisonment, after being sealed in by the Seven Masters. Only Maruchi can prevent HeugUn (Dark Cloud) from plunging the world into dark chaos! Can Sang-hwan be reborn as Maruchi and combine his forces with Arachi in time to defeat HeugUn (Dark Cloud) and restore the peaceful flow of chi to the world?
KIM Mi-hee has produced the movie along with Executive Producer KANG Woo-suk. Cinematography has been done by LEE Joon-gyu. NAM Na-young is the editor and music has been contributed by HAN Je-kwon. Special wire action and elaborate CG effects are by Insight visuals (TaeGukGi).
