No. 0591 (Hạt Cát dịch)

Gov eulogizes Kashmir’s glorious ethos

Patna, Oct 25: Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today expressed optimism about peace dawning in Jammu and Kashmir soon and said that normalcy is fast returning in the Valley, once a great centre of Buddhist culture and philosophy.
Addressing Buddhist delegates from various parts of the world at Ratnagiri Hill, Rajgir near here this morning on the 36th anniversary of Vishwa Shanti Stupa, the Governor gave the historical background of the Srinagar City with reference to Buddhist era.
He said the Valley of Kashmir is steeped in Buddhist history with numerous Vihars having flourished here. The Valley, known as Paradise on Earth, he said became a Valley of Vihars. The City of Srinagar was founded by Ashoka the Great and at the beginning of the Christian era, Kanishka, another great ruler, ruled over a large empire from Peshawar that included Kashmir, he added.
In his presidential address, General Sinha referred to an interesting fact of history, not widely known, and said that Kanshika wanted Ashwaghosh, the greatest Buddhist philosopher of his time who lived at Pataliputra, in his court. He declined to leave Pataliputra and Kanishka asked the King of Magadh to despatch Ashwaghosh to him. On refusal by the Magadhan ruler, Kanishka mounted a military invasion, arrived at Pataliputra and forcibly took Ashwaghosh away to Peshawar.
He said that military invasions have been taking place throughout history for plunder, territory, trade and even the hand of a fair maiden but there is no other instance in history of a military invasion being launched for acquiring a learned man.
The Governor said that Ashwaghosh became the leading light in the court of Kanishka and organized the famous Fourth Buddhist Council at Srinagar in the First Century A.D. This was one of the greatest assemblages of Buddhist scholars of that time. Buddhism spread from there to Central Asia, China and Tibet. He said the largest Buddhist population and Buddhist monasteries in India are in the Ladakh region. ‘It is a great privilege for me to come here from Kashmir and bring for Rajgir Buddha Vihar Society, two large framed photographs and an album of photographs. The two large photographs are of Buddha stone statue at Molbek in Ladakh. It is now the largest Buddha statue in the world after the Bamyan statue was destroyed by the Taliban criminals. The other photograph is of the site in Srinagar at which Ashoka founded the city of Srinagar. An ancient Buddhist temple built at that site is still well preserved. It has a very artistic contour. The album contains photographs of some Buddhist artifacts found in the Kashmir Valley’, he added.
