Hãy dũng cảm khi tử thần …gõ cửa.

Viết bởi CHAN LI LEEN, The Star, số ra ngày 22 tháng t ư , 2005.

A TRUE FIGHTER: Chor posing with her trophy and mock cheque at the Guang Ming Hero award ceremony in Ipoh last week.

Being brave when death is knocking on her door

BY CHAN LI LEEN, The Star, April 22, 2005

IPOH, Malaysia -- Having spent over a third of her life fighting various cancers and other ailments and now a palliative care patient, Chor Haw Ching is fully aware that death can be just around the corner.

But while the 31-year-old admits to being a little afraid because it is an unknown factor, the thought of dying holds no fear for her. “I’m ready,” said this spunky woman who has gone under the knife 11 times. At 20, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and her gall bladder failed two years later in 1996. In 2000, she was initially thought to have ovarian cancer, but it turned out to be a tumour on the outer wall of her small intestine. “From the start, doctors painted a very grim picture and warned me about worse things to come. It was as if I had been handed a death sentence. “The first few years were especially scary and lonely. There were times when I was at the verge of insanity and felt like killing myself,” she said. Things did get worse – she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2001, and in 2002 had a 12cm-long tumour removed from her small intestine. With a large part of her intestines and rectum removed by then, Chor became a stoma patient and was required to wear a pouch outside the body to hold waste excreted. Left with only 0.3m of large intestine and more tumours growing in her small intestine, she was also told she had only six months to live. “It was then that I realised life goes on, no matter how happy or sad one is,” she said. Up till this point, Chor had clung on to her job as a croupier in Genting Highlands, thinking that happiness depended on material things. Having reached her new understanding of life, she quit her job, and now receives a Socso pension as well as medical benefits from the organisation. In addition, she started volunteer work with the Perak Palliative Care Society and the Ipoh Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit, where she talks to other cancer patients and looks into their needs. She is also a volunteer with Buddhist groups. “I found true happiness in accepting my condition and in reaching out to others. I started to realise that it didn’t matter how long I lived as long as life is meaningful,” she said. And even though she is receiving palliative care, Chor has every intention of living life to the fullest. Last year, she wrote To Wither and Then Blossom, a book based on her life, which she hopes will inspire others. Chor's courage in the face of such odds was recognised last week when she received the Guang Ming Hero award and RM10,000 from MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting. As for the future, she said: “Death and life are actually the same and one shouldn’t be afraid of it. Death is a natural process.”

Không có việc tước bỏ danh vị Di Sản Thế Giới của Ðại Bồ Ðề Tự ở Bihar

The Times of India, [IANS], April 25, 2005

Bodh Gaya not to be delisted: UNESCO

The Times of India, [IANS], April 25, 2005

PATNA, Bihar (India) ── UNESCO has clarified that it has no plans to de-list the Bodh Gaya temple in Bihar, near the site where Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment some 2,500 years ago, from its World Heritage List.

A two-member Unesco team that visited Bodh Gaya, the temple town known as Buddhism's birthplace about 110 km from here, to assess the physical condition of the 1,500-year-old temple, also said it was ready to help the Indian government protect the historic complex.

"There is no question of de-listing the temple from the World Heritage status list," said Junko Okahasi, one of the members in the team.

She said no such thing had ever happened in the UN organisation's history. "UNESCO is more keen to protect and conserve it because it is a world heritage site".

"We have met and held discussions with government officials, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple management committee and others on how to protect and conserve the temple," said Okahasi.

It had been decided to protect it from pollution, population pressures and natural disasters. "We have to work within a time frame to protect and conserve it," the UNESCO official said.
Over the last two years, UNESCO has issued several warnings that the heritage status would be withdrawn if maintenance guidelines continued to be flouted.

The temple, which was declared a world heritage site in June 2002, became the 23rd historical structure in India to be given the special status.

UNESCO was reportedly unhappy after a three-member expert committee had complained after a visit earlier this month that illegal concrete structures were mushrooming in and around the temple.

The central and Bihar governments had assured UNESCO that its guidelines including the enforcement of a strict ban on all construction in a one-km radius around the temple - would be strictly followed.

The Bihar government had drawn up grand plans to develop the site into a major tourist destination after it was included in the heritage list.

A building boom followed, even though the government had agreed not to allow any construction in the buffer area.

Buddhism's birthplace protests against Unesco plan

People of Bodh Gaya, a temple town in Bihar known as Buddhism's birthplace, Saturday called a strike against Unesco's plans to protect and conserve the world heritage site.
The Unesco team is in Bodh Gaya, about 110 km from here, to assess the physical condition of the 1,500-year-old temple, which was declared a world heritage site in June 2002.
The Unesco had asked government agencies last year to stop violating guidelines and threatened to de-list the temple from the world heritage list.
The temple wore a deserted look as traders and hoteliers observed two-day stir.
The marketplace shutdown was reportedly total to protest a master plan being prepared as per the maintenance guidelines of Unesco.
The Bodh Gaya Nagrik Manch, a body of local people, gave the strike call, sources told IANS from Bodh Gaya over telephone.

Unesco's maintenance guidelines would uproot hundreds of local residents, they added.
The temple, the 23rd historical structure in India to be given the special heritage status, stands at the site near where the Buddha attained enlightenment some 2,500 years ago.
Unesco officials are reportedly unhappy after a three-member expert committee last week complained that illegal concrete structures were mushrooming in and around the temple.
The Unesco had been warning over the last two years that it would revoke the heritage status for the temple if its maintenance guidelines continued to be flouted.
The central and Bihar governments had assured the Unesco that its guidelines - including the enforcement of a strict ban on all construction in a one-kilometer radius around the temple - would be strictly followed.
However, new structures have come up within the restricted area.
The Bihar government had drawn up grand plans to develop the site into a major tourist destination after it was included in the heritage list.
A building boom followed, though the government had agreed not to allow any construction in the buffer area.

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, Lạt Ma Panchen thứ 11 của Tây Tạng vẫn mất tích
CHRD Press Statement

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet: still disappeared

CHRD Press Statement

Date: 24 April 2005

The year 2005 has been declared as the International Year of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. He turns 16 on 25 April 2005. It is his tenth year in Chinese custody at an undisclosed location after he and his parents disappeared in 17 May 1995.

On 14 May 1995, His Holiness the Dalai Lama recognised the then six-years old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the reincarnation of the Xth Panchen Lama. The government of the People?s Republic of China (PRC) declared the announcement invalid and illegal. Three days later, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his parents disappeared and have never been seen again. China has signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on 29 August 1990 and ratified it on 2 March 1992. China's detention of boy Panchen Lama is a clear violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as domestic and international Laws.

In October 2000 a British delegation was told by the Chinese authorities that the boy was well and attending school. They said that his parents did not want international figures and the media intruding into his life. Two photographs claimed to be of the Panchen Lama were shown to the British delegation showing a boy of approximately the same age. However it was impossible to determine the boy?s identity or location, and the British officials were not given the photos to ascertain.

In August 2001, a Polish Parliamentary delegation visiting Lhasa was told in response to repeated questions that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was healthy; the delegation was promised photos of the boy within six weeks but never received them. Later, the Polish Government received a letter from the Chinese embassy in Warsaw stating that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his parents did not want their peaceful life disturbed by strangers, and that the Chinese government ?respects freedom of choice for its citizens and hopes that the Polish people would understand that too.?

In March 2002, a government delegation from the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) met with a European Parliament delegation and the authorities once again reiterated that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima did not wish to be disturbed. The "TAR" delegation refused to answer questions about photographs promised to the Polish delegation. In the light of a refusal to provide photographs that positively identify Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, or to allow independent access to the boy and his family, the Tibetan people can only fear the worst.

The continued disappearance of Panchen Lama in the Tibetan hierarchy completely contradicts China?s claim to respect religious freedom in Tibet. It is a matter of great concern that such prominent religious figure is denied and bereft of any traditional religious studies and training even if he is alive.

For the past ten years since his abduction and disappearance along with his parents, no information on their whereabouts and well being were known to international bodies and human rights watchdogs. Chadrel Rinpoche, a former abbot of Tashi Lhunpo monastery seat of Panchen Lama, and Chairman of the Search Committee for the reincarnation of the 11th Panchen Lama. Chadrel Rinpoche and his assistant Champa Chungla disappeared from Chengdu Airport in Sichuan Province on 14 May 1995. On 21 April1997, the Shigatse Intermediate People?s court sentenced Chadrel Rinpoche to six years of imprisonment. He was charged with ?plotting to split the country? and ?leaking state secrets?. He was accused of working for and assisting the Dalai Lama in the search for the 11th Panchen Lama. Although his sentence ended on 13 May 2001 following the completion of a six-year prison term, it is believed that he is now kept under house arrest. There is no additional information on his exact whereabouts in Shigatse, or on his state of health. Jampa Chungla, 56-year-old former assistant of Chadrel Rinpoche, was arrested in 1995 for his participation in the search committee of the 11th Panchen Lama. He was sentenced to a four- year prison term and to a two-year deprivation of political rights. He continues to be held in custody even after the completion of his original four-year prison term.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) is deeply concerned at the Chinese government?s continued detention of a 15-year-old boy. In the wake of subsequent failures of past independent bodies to meet the 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, TCHRD urges the United Nations and its various thematic bodies to pressure Chinese Government to allow Committee on Rights of the Child to meet Gedhun Choekyi Nyima to verify his health and living conditions.

Burma military turns old city to its own use

Theme park rises; reviews are mixed
By Thomas Crampton, International Herald Tribune April 24, 2005

BAGAN, Burma -- Near a slow bend in the Irrawaddy River here, the brick peaks of the 13th-century Winido temple complex reach majestically skyward. They are among this nation's great monuments to its Buddhist traditions.
But the rooftops, towers and conical stupas, as they are called, are no longer the only structures that dominate the horizon at sunset. Just a few hundred meters away, a newly built 200-foot-tall concrete viewing tower looms over a plain punctuated with several thousand structures.
Those edifices give evidence of what was once an imperial capital and a world center of Theravada Buddhist life.
Ancient kings celebrated their faith and power by building tall and lavish brick monuments, with murals and sculptures.
Now the military dictators who run this country, which they call Myanmar, are adding their own structures, constructed from poured concrete.
The viewing tower is within an area the United Nations has tried for decades to protect with World Heritage status.
The structure has set off an outcry: Conservationists and travel executives condemn the project, but none criticize the government, for fear of retribution.
''We cannot fight against this government in any way because they have total control," said a conservation official in Burma.
In addition to the tower, a poured concrete palace is also being built as an approximate, if entirely imagined, re-creation of the seat of an empire that once ruled a swath of Southeast Asia.
''They are digging up this wealthy archaeological zone to build artificial lakes, golf courses, and now a structure based on their imagined idea of the palace," said a conservationist in Thailand who declined to be named. ''It makes you want to scream."
Described by Marco Polo in the late 13th century as a splendor of gilded towers with ringing bells, the city fell on tough times. Kublai Khan's troops from Mongolia destabilized the empire. They were followed by treasure-hunting Shan hordes who broke up Buddhas in search of jewels. A major earthquake in 1975 sent many of the brick structures tumbling.
''A Disney-style fantasy version of one of the world's great religious and historical sites is being created by that government," said Christian Manhart, a program specialist for UNESCO. ''They use the wrong materials to build wrongly shaped structures on top of magnificent ancient stupas."
Manhart was declared persona non grata by the government because of his protests against the rebuilding program.
The new tower, a cigarette-shaped structure with a spiral staircase around the exterior, is topped off with three viewing floors and an ornate decorative sculpture on the roof. Surrounding the tower is a large hotel resort. Two dozen luxury cottages are under construction. An artificial lake has been filled, though that area of Burma suffers from chronic shortages of clean water.
Once the tower opens to visitors in the next few months, visiting rules are expected to take effect for the entire zone.
''The tower is an absolute scandal that would cause outrage if people knew what was happening to one of the world's great monuments," a retired government official said. ''But of course Bagan's restoration has long been a tool of politicians."

PEMA “Wisdom and Compassion”: An Evening With Pema Chodron & Jack Kornfield
PRWEB, April 21, 2005

San Francisco, USA -- 2005 Northern California Shambhala Teaching Series "Fearless Compassion: Engaging the World with an Open Heart" presents Pema Chodron in several SF bay area talks and workshops

Pema Chodron, a leading exponent of teachings on meditation and how they apply to everyday life and Jack Kornfield, meditation teacher and founder of Spirit Rock Center in Marin, will talk about wisdom and compassion 7 pm, May 26 at the Nob Hill Masonic Center in San Francisco.

The public dialogue, moderated by Michael Krasny of KQED’s popular Forum radio program, will explore the relationship between wisdom, compassion, suffering, and fear.

“Compassion is our capacity to care about others and our wish to alleviate their pain. It is based not on pity, but on the acknowledgement that we are all in this together. Compassion is a relationship between equals. So in any moment of hardness, we can connect with the compassion we already have for abused children, laboratory animals, our friends, our relatives, for anyone anywhere and let it open our heart and mind in what otherwise might feel like an impossibly frozen situation,” said Chodron, resident teacher of Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia.

Chodron, a student of the late Trungpa Rinpoche, the renowned Tibetan Buddhist meditation master, poet, and author who founded the Shambhala global network of centers in 1973, has written several books, including “Start Where You Are”, and “When Things Fall Apart”, and “The Places That Scare You.”

Kornfield is a founding teacher of the Insight Meditation Society as well as Spirit Rock Center in Marin. His authored books include “A Path with Heart” and “The Art of Forgiveness, Lovingkindness, and Peace.”

Northern California Shambhala is a non-profit community of eleven meditation centers and study groups located throughout the bay area, including Marin, Sonoma, Davis, Berkeley, Mountain View, and San Francisco. It is part of an international network of centers dedicated to meditation and other contemplative practices. The Shambhala tradition is now led by the Trungpa Rinpoche’s son, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and hosts nationally recognized teachers and authors, including Chodron.
