Afghan cliffs the canvas for laser image Buddhas
by Solvej Schou, August 11, 2005
WHEN the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan destroyed two 1600-year-old Buddha statues lining Bamiyan Valley's soaring cliffs, the world was shocked at the demise of such huge archeological treasures.

Artist Hiro Yamagata is planning to commemorate the towering Buddhas by projecting multicoloured laser images onto the clay cliffsides where the figures once stood, about 130km west of Kabul.

"I'm doing a fine art piece. That's my purpose - not for human rights, or for supporting religion or a political statement," says the 58-year-old artist, whose other laser works include a recent display at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

Against a canvas of desert darkness, 14 laser systems will project 140 overlapping faceless "statues" sweeping 6.5km across Bamiyan's cliffs, in neon shades of green, pink, orange, white and blue.

Each image will continuously change colour and pattern. Powered by solar panels and windmills, the 37.5mX52.5m-high squiggle-style, Day-Glo images - the same size as the original Buddhas - would be in stark contrast to the austere, rural valley below, a land wracked by poverty and violence; a land that has little electricity of its own.

In March 2001, Taliban militants disregarded worldwide protests and used dynamite and artillery to blow up the original fifth-century statues, famed for their size and location along the ancient Silk Road linking Europe and Central Asia. The fundamentalist group considered the Buddhas idolatrous and anti-Muslim.

Afghan Government officials first approached Yamagata about the project in 2003 and gave him conditional approval last year, pending a green light from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. UNESCO has been a prominent presence in Bamiyan, evaluating ways to preserve mural paintings in caves surrounding the Buddhas.

"They are the ones who will make a decision and will advise us," Gulam Sakhi Yousafzai, former acting deputy minister in charge of arts and culture in Afghanistan, says. "They are the experts. We are waiting for their response."

Bamiyan provincial Governor Habiba Sarobi hopes UNESCO can prove the cliffs would not be damaged by the 100-watt laser beams, which would be permanently projected every Sunday night for four hours. "If there is a way to do it so there is no environmental impact, we would support it as it would boost tourism and the images would remind us of what the cliffs once looked like," Sarobi says.

Letters sent to Yamagata from physics and chemistry experts at the University of Antwerp and the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, note the beams will not affect the cliffs because of low power levels cast from a safe distance of between 9 1/2-13km. Zahir Aziz, Afghan ambassador to UNESCO, says he will strongly recommend Yamagata's lasers if they are passed by UNESCO. He also confirms that a Swiss plan to rebuild the Buddhas at $US30 million ($39.32 million) a statue is no longer in the works.

Meanwhile, Yamagata, who estimates his project's cost at up to $11.8 million, has been busy amassing funds, materials and workers.

The walls of his base in suburban Torrance, California, are adorned with colourful photographs and sketches of the Bamiyan and other upcoming projects, including a display in Fiji where he will create a huge holographic Mylar cube suspended on top of one of the islands. Smaller-scale versions of his most famous conceptual works, including the house-sized holographic cubes exhibited at Bilbao's Guggenheim, are scattered around the studio. Shortly after his 2003 meeting with Afghan officials in Tokyo, Yamagata visited Bamiyan and was moved by its orphaned children, squalid living conditions and lack of electricity. He decided then that his artwork should also give something back to the region.

Yamagata says 100 of the 140-odd 4000-kilowatt windmills he plans to ship into Afghanistan for the Bamiyan project will provide power for surrounding villages. He also wants to hire 40 local young men, typically jobless, to dig foundations for the windmills, starting in March 2006. Completion of the project is set for June 2007.

Yamagata, a long-time Los Angeles resident who was born in Japan, says he has already secured co-sponsorship from Mercedes-Benz, and will choose a windmill company in December. "Many people say my art will heal the people. I always avoid 'heal the people'," Yamagata says. "Of course, I help people, but it's more about not harming people. An artist to me is more about inner matter."

Dallas Museum of Art to Present East Meets West

artdaily.com, August 7, 2005

DALLAS, TX.-The Dallas Museum of Art will present an exhibition which investigates the rich historical interplay between the art of Asia and the West. The exhibition East Meets West opens Aug. 7 and is on view through Nov. 27 in the Focus Gallery.

The exhibition pairs objects of sculpture, painting and decorative pieces from the East and West, revealing the creative interaction between the artists of the two worlds.

Artistic exchanges occurred as historical boundaries widened, first in antiquity and again after the Renaissance. As eastern Asia opened up to the West, prominent artists like Edgar Degas and James McNeill Whistler began to explore the visual styles of the Orient. At the same time, Asian artists created works for the European market.

“The emerging 19th-century trade between Asia, Europe and America hastened a vibrant exchange of fine arts and decorative arts at that time,” said Dr. Anne Bromberg, The Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Ancient and South Asian Art of the Dallas Museum of Art. “It led to a rich visual mix—on both sides of the equation.”

That historical development could be considered an early movement in the creation of the “Global Village” of the modern world, since both Asian and Western artists today are able to work in a worldwide cultural context.

Paired pieces in the East Meets West exhibition will show how the discovery of Asia by the Greeks during the reign of Alexander the Great influenced Asian Buddhist art, which began to reflect Greek and Roman styles. In the 17th century, Spanish Colonial artists adopted Japanese art types like folded screens. From a Gandharan Head of Buddha to a 20th-century Mark Tobey painting recalling Japanese calligraphy, visitors will be able to see the effects of many profitable artistic meetings between the Western and Eastern worlds.

One of the outstanding works in the exhibit is the contemporary artist Mariko Mori’s Burning Desire, a large image on glass that shows the artist as a Tibetan Buddhist holy figure, encircled by flames. The work is on loan from Cindy and Howard Rachofsky. East Meets West was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and curated by Dr. Bromberg.

Ministry to distribute Tipitaka to general public
Published on August 19, 2005

The Culture Ministry is planning to publish and distribute 500,000 volumes of the Tipitaka Buddhist canon to government agencies, private organisations, hotels and hospitals, as well as the general public, as part of its drive to revive faith in the religion. Yesterday, the ministry’s Religious Affairs Department held a seminar to discuss how to prevent people in Thailand from straying further from the Buddhist way of life.

One idea was to publish the Tipitaka and distribute it to the general public, so they would absorb the teachings of the Lord Buddha.

Preecha Kanthiya, director-general of the department, said the government would like to do this and that the project would cost Bt80 million.

“Publishing should start next month. We’ll also distribute the Tipitaka to 4,000 monks who provide religious and moral instruction,” Preecha said.

If the Tipitaka does get published, it would have to be in an abridged form, because the entire work covers more than three dozen volumes.

The Religious Affairs Department also plans to publish the Lord Buddha’s teachings and the different incarnations of the Lord Buddha in cartoon form or produce animated versions to educate Thai youngsters.

The Tipitaka covers the essence of Buddhism and is divided into three main parts: the vinaya, the sutta and the abhidhamma. The vinaya is the rules and procedures that guide the practices of monks, the sutta is the Lord Buddha’s spoken teachings and the abhidhamma is the interpretation of the ultimate reality as discovered by the Lord Buddha.

Recently, the Dhamma Society Fund published three sets of the world’s first romanised version of the Tipitaka. Sweden, Sri Lanka and the Constitution Court have taken delivery of 40-volume sets.

Somdej Phrayanvarodom, the abbot of Wat Thepsirin, expressed concern about the failure of Thai Buddhists to learn and understand the teachings of the Lord Buddha.

“It’s dangerous to the security of Buddhism that people no longer pay attention to the teachings of the Lord Buddha. When they enter the monkhood, they violate the rules. They get into fights after looking each other in the face. There are crimes committed everywhere,” said the abbot.

“We can’t believe that Thais are Buddhists after being beer-drinking champions in Germany for two years in a row now. There are liquor stores in front of temples everywhere. Foreigners question whether we really are a Buddhist society.”
