Thiền và Nghệ Thuật Sống Tại Thành Phố Delhi, Ấn Độ

Neha Sinha -Delhi NewsLine
Sunday , August 07, 2005

They are the best tenants any landlord could ask for. About 170 Vietnamese monks and nuns have conquered the city’s aggression and made it home

Neha Sinha -Delhi NewsLine

IF you don’t know where to find tofu in the city, you can ask them. And if you are looking for friends or tenants who are scrupulous and peaceloving, you can ask them too. Over the years, Buddhist monks and nuns from Vietnam—who come to Delhi University to pursue Buddhist studies—have quietly but steadily become part of the city’s landscape.

Having learnt to live with the heat and quirks of the city, these grey/brown robed Buddhist scholars coming to Delhi on ICCR fellowships will cheerfully tell you how they get along with money laundering landlords, extreme heat and language problems (read no Hindi and nearly no English speaking ability). They will also tell you how much they love the city that takes them closer to their goal of Buddhist scholarship—fortified with the city’s monasteries and museums, along with a chance to experience rickshaws (a novelty in Vietnam) and additional colour in the form of purely-vegetarian-typically-Dilli Chowmein and paapri-chaat.

‘‘The Buddhist studies course at Delhi Universities has only twenty to thirty percent Indian students,’’ says Dr. I.N Singh, who teaches in the department. ‘‘The rest are Buddhist monks coming from all over the world. Of these, Vietnamese monks are a steady group and a pleasure to teach,’’ he explains.

Singh is not the only one who welcomes these students to Delhi. Raves Sandhya Dhar, who houses Vietnamese monks as tenants, ‘‘They are scrupulous, magnanimous and friendly. If you take them in, not only will you have peaceful tenants sans any sort of security problems, but also loving friends.’’

Amazingly, these modern monks themselves survive all of Delhi’s vagaries— including security problems—with the help of their small but very tightly knit community.

‘‘Currently there are 170 Vietnamese monks and nuns in the city, and the number of students on fellowship coming here each year is going up,’’ says an official from the Vietnamese embassy. Also assisting them get by is a little help from technology. These are monks and nuns who come all equipped with computers, electronic diaries and the occasional Worldspace radio— despite these liberating international links and the inherent problems of a large, unfriendly city, they still prefer living in the capital.

Says Nguyen Dang Duyen, a monk pursuing his M.Phil and a resident of the city for three years, ‘‘There are Buddhist studies courses in Pune, Varanasi, Nalanda, Jaipur and Calcutta Universities, but we come here the most because nothing rivals the colour and facilities of Delhi!’’

And Delhi has made space for the gang. Favourite hangouts are Rajghat, the Janpath museum, little vegetarian restaurants like Wongdhen House in Majnu Ka Tila, the Lotus temple and the World book fairs.

The community has learned to source its needs from all over the city—curios and incense holders from Chawri Bazaar, ‘‘oriental style instant rice vermiccili’’ and tofu from the INA market, candles from Khan Market and Kamla Nagar.

The popular image of the Buddha that most worship is from Bodh Gaya and highly Indianised—the image sits on a lotus and has large, Lord Krishna style eyes, and painted lips. Duyen emphasises the importance of Bodh Gaya. ‘‘The world Buddhist community converges at the Buddha’s birthspot, over October, November and December, because those are the cooler months,’’ he says. Till then, these people, living their peaceful, simple lives, are more than welcome in the city.
