Khám phá thêm nhiều hình dáng của Ðức Phật tại Viện Bảo Tàng Metropolian, New York

by Dana Tyler, CBS, March 20, 2006

Explore The Many Forms Of Buddha At The Met
by Dana Tyler, CBS, March 20, 2006
NEW YORK, USA -- Buddha is everywhere in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Asian galleries.

You will see Buddha, the central, spiritual figure of Buddhism, one of the world's major religions, in all sizes here. Associate Curator Denise Leidy points CBS 2's Dana Tyler to one of Museum's classic examples of Buddha from India.

"The sculpture we're looking at here is one of our Indian masterpieces. It dates from 460 to 475 and is considered to be a classic image of what a Buddha would look like, So that it has a balance between absolutely, physically present being, but if you look at the face, the eyes are looking down, it seems to be introspective. You get a sense of the person who was there but had somehow moved beyond mortal concerns which is course exactly what a Buddha is."

Tyler and Leidy checks out the adjoining galleries, and find two colorful examples of Buddhist disciples from China, dating back to 1000 A.D. The sculptures are part of a group of sixteen that were found in a cave in China in the early 20th century. Leidy tells Tyler that the Met is lucky to have them, the others are in museums in China and Europe.

Buddha also makes a big impression in a 14th century painting that once covered a temple wall in China. Surrounded by regal figures, known as Bodhisattvas, this Buddha represents medicine.

In Buddhism, by the way, a Bodhisattva is an enlightened being who stays in the world to guide the rest of us.

Not far from the painting, there's another larger-than-life Bodhisatva figure. Denise says

"This is a late 6th century piece from China, it's so large it must have been placed at a crossroads or something very public, so you could imagine being in China at that point in time and walking on a dusty road and seeing it there and remembering it symbolizes compassion and feeling very assured."

Right now is the time to come and see another masterpiece of Buddhist art. It's not under glass so you can get up close to a Japanese painting from the 14th century. It depicts the death of Buddha. While a few people in the painting know that Buddha's death is actually a good thing, almost every other image, human and beast, is in despair.

Leidy tells Tyler the Met displays this work at this time of year only, when it's believed Buddha died. "This was his final lifetime, and now he's transcended all mortal concerns. Most of his followers don't see that .. you've got this elephant writhing in pain on his back, you've got this monkey depressed, in the upper right hand corner you've got his mother coming down from heaven, it's kind of a way station, she's crying so eyes are covered."

Visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art can explore the many forms of Buddha in the Asian Galleries.

Phật tử thành phố Iowa tìm kiếm an bình nội tâm qua hành thiền
By Rob Daniel
Iowa City Press-Citizen
Monday, March 20, 2006

Buddhists search for peace in Iowa City

Monday, March 20, 2006

By Rob Daniel
Iowa City Press-Citizen

Jean Robinson sat in the lotus position on a low couch in the living room of her apartment, her hands on her knees. Her eyes closed, she concentrated on her breathing as she meditated. On occasion, she quietly chanted a mantra in Tibetan, rolling a mala, or set of beads, between her fingers. The process continued for about 20 minutes.

"It helps ground," Robinson, 52, said of the mala. "It's an aid to help you pay attention to your thoughts. Meditation is to be aware of the thoughts and let them go."

Robinson is among a handful of Iowa City area residents who study Buddhism in some form. A rough estimate of about 60 people regularly attend teachings or meditations at the Jalandhara Buddhist Meditation Center in Iowa City, the Iowa City Zen Center or Tso Pema in Oxford.

In general, Buddhists usually maintain a low profile, and their numbers are hard to determine, said Diana Velez, a vice-president of the Jalandhara Center. One reason for this is Buddhists do not promote or proselytize their beliefs, she said.

"The point of Buddhism is for the person who is a Buddhist to work on their mind," said Velez, a student of Buddhism since 1989 and an associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Iowa.

The difficulty of starting and continuing a regular schedule of meditation also has kept the area's regular Buddhist practitioners to a minimum, said Derick Kluge, board president of the Iowa City Zen Center.

"Interest in (Buddhism) and meditation in general has grown," Kluge, 32, said. "To do anything on a regular basis ... takes a commitment. People expect to see results real fast. It's more gradual. It's basically forming a good habit with it."

The interest in learning more about Buddhism has extended beyond Iowa City into Oxford, where Tso Pema, a group that practices Tibetan Buddhism, meets. Juanita Strait, a member of Tso Pema, said the group averages 10 to 15 people who regularly meditate in her home, which serves as the center for the gatherings.

"We host the teachers," she said. "Some teachings are open to the general public and others are restricted to those who have been practicing for a while."

According to Buddha Dharma Education Association Inc., about 300 million people worldwide practice the religion, which originated in what is today Nepal about 2,500 years ago. For its practitioners, it has provided a method of dealing with the difficulties of life, Kluge said.

"Like a lot of people, I needed something to feel a connection to in my life," he said. "For me, it's a way to deal with the things I deal with everyday."

The focus on finding peace through meditation has attracted many followers in the Iowa City area.

Robinson said she grew up on a farm near Baxter, attending the United Church of Christ. By the age of 14, she realized she did not believe in what the church taught.

"I never really felt like much of a Christian," she said. "I was more of an agnostic. I didn't like the behavior of the members."

She said she basically lived as an agnostic for the next 30 years until she came across Sogyal Rinpoche's "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" as she checked in books as a volunteer at the Iowa City Public Library. Reading one page of the book, she became determined to continue researching. She eventually found the Lama Ole Nydahl, a Tibetan Buddhist yogi, or teacher, who teaches regularly at Varja Yana (Diamond Way) Buddhist Groups in Minneapolis and Madison, Wis.

Robinson said she is now going through the foundational training to clear her mind of any anger she may have.

"If you stay persistent enough, it really works," she said of the regular meditation she does. "You start to notice it, but you start to put distance between it. You can see more clearly what to do about it."

Kluge said he met a Buddhist monk at monastery in northwest Iowa three years ago and learned how to experience meditation. He said he discovered that he could keep an open mind about the world and practice Buddhism without throwing away his Catholic background.

"I have always felt Buddhism is complimentary to any faith," he said. "Personally, Buddhism is the main practice for me."
