Vài nét về lịch sử đất nước Mông Cổ

PHẬT ĐIỂN
---o0o---

Colombo - Sri Lanka's most celebrated elephant, "Raja," has fallen ill after eating scores of cookies, chocolates and other rich food offered to him as part of Buddhist new year celebrations.

Thousands of worshippers have visited Raja at Colombo's 150-year-old Gangaramaya Temple in recent days ahead of the new year celebrations starting on Thursday.

Many have offered Raja, named for the word meaning king in both Sinhalese and Tamil, homemade cookies deep fried in coconut oil, chocolates, rice cooked in thick milk and fermented slices of sweet pineapple, monks who care for him said on Tuesday.

'He likes eating and on Monday many people came and offered him all sorts of things'
At dawn on Tuesday, monks found Raja writhing in pain with tears in his eyes.

Monks, a veterinarian and the chief of zoology at Colombo University attended to Raja, 45, who retched and thrashed about in discomfort in his sandy enclosure.

"He likes eating and on Monday many people came and offered him all sorts of things," said Kirinde Assaji, the 37-year-old monk who led efforts to help Raja.

Elephant's mostly eat vegetation, and their digestive system cannot easily cope with rich or processed foods, veterinarians said.

"We presume he has got a severe infection through bad food and is unable to purge normally," said Tissa Ratnasuriya of Colombo University's Zoology Department. "The cookies... literally are soaked in oil and those were given to Raja. He is under severe pain."

For centuries, aristocratic families in Sri Lanka kept elephants captured from the wild. The presence of an elephant, preferably a bull elephant like Raja, is common at big Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, where Buddhism is the majority religion.

A century ago, 10 000 to 15 000 elephants roamed wild in Sri Lanka, but today only about 3 000 remain, largely because of poaching and loss of habitat.

The monks on Tuesday hung a handwritten notice by Raja's enclosure that read: "Do not feed the elephant." - Sapa-AP

China decides against inviting Dalai Lama
Zee News, April 13, 2006

Beijing, China -- China has decided not to invite Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama to the first world Buddhist forum to be held from today in the country's east, saying his presence would have posed a "disharmonious" element to the meeting.

"In my opinion, if he appears at the forum, he will surely pose a really disharmonious note to the general harmonious tone of the forum," vice president of the China religious culture communication association Qi Xiaofei said yesterday, when asked why Dalai Lama was not invited for the April 13-16 event in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province.

The main purpose of the forum was to provide an equal, diversified and open platform for dialogue between all those who love all living creatures, protect and care for the Buddhism, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying.

"We welcome any form of exchanges, but we won't give Dalai Lama any chance to disharmonise the forum," he said.

"What we need here and now is dialogue rather than confrontation," he said, claiming that judging from Dailai Lama's past activities, he might bring about harm to the "harmony" theme of the forum.

Qi alleged that Dalai Lama was not only a religious figure but also a long-time "secessionist".

His comments comes days after a senior Chinese official said Beijing can consider a visit by the Dalai Lama.

"It is not impossible for us to consider his visit" provided the Dalai Lama completely abandons Tibetan independence, Ye Xiaowen, who heads state administration for religious affairs, had said.

Ye said the Dalai Lama "has failed to deliver a clear message on his stance," but added, "we can discuss it (the trip by Dalai Lama)."

Annan calls for harmonious coexistence of world people
Xinhua, April 13, 2006

HANGZHOU, China -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan called on the international community to work for the common interests and harmonious coexistence of people across the world in a le tter congratulating on the opening of the First World Buddhist Forum here Thursday.

The letter was read by Tung Chee Hwa, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Annan urged people to think beyond their narrow and short-term interests, and raise themselves to a universal perspective from which the well-being of the broader human community can be seen to be as important as the individual well-being.

He said that the Buddha's ethnical and humanitarian ideals gave birth to a vibrant spiritual tradition that continues, more than 2,500 years later, to ennoble the lives of millions of people.

"Today, the Buddha's vision of peace may be more relevant than ever before. Indeed, if we want to have a chance of overcoming the many challenges that face us today - in the fields of peace and security, development, and the protection of our global environment."

He called on people, whatever their origin, race, culture or belief, to be aware of the fact they are not essentially different,as they share the same home, an ever smaller planet on which everyone is bound to live together.

"So, let us work together toward the common good and the harmonious and peaceful coexistence of all the world people," Annan said.
