Nepalese hail vote on secular status
The Associated Press

FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2006

KATMANDU, Nepal Christian, Buddhist and Muslim leaders in Nepal on Friday hailed the Parliament's move to change the Hindu nation into a secular state.

A resolution passed by Parliament on Thursday included a clause that said Nepal would no longer be formally known as a Hindu country. More than 85 percent of Nepal's 27 million people are Hindus.

"We welcome the government decision. We have been fighting for secular and religious freedom in Nepal for a long time," said K.B. Rokaya of the Regional Council of Churches in Nepal.

Rokaya said the government should form a regulatory body "so that all sort of religious activities can be practiced freely and without any intimidation."

The Nepalese Constitution, written in 1990, declared the Himalayan country a Hindu kingdom.

Cheering Nepalese held rallies in several cities and towns Friday to celebrate Parliament's vote to dramatically cut King Gyanendra's powers and turn him into a figurehead leader.

Communist rebels who control much of the countryside also welcomed the resolution - passed unanimously by Parliament - but said the king's ceremonial role should also be eliminated.

The sweeping resolution called for King Gyanendra to be stripped of his command over the army, his legal immunity, and freedom from paying taxes. It also said the king should lose his official position as head of the Himalayan country, changing traditional references to "His Majesty's government" to simply the "Nepal government."

To be enacted, the resolution still must be voted on as a series of laws, officials said. That was expected in the next few days.

The measure's passage "has begun the process," the deputy prime minister, Khadga Prasad Oli, said Thursday. "The government will work with Parliament to execute the resolution and laws will be drafted to implement the resolution."

Top political leaders addressed a major rally in the capital, Katmandu, on Friday, which the government declared a public holiday to celebrate the passage of the resolution. All government offices and schools were closed for the day, the Home Ministry said in a notice.

The seven parties in the governing alliance called the resolution a historic achievement that had eliminated all of the king's powers.

"This ends the remains of the royal regime and establishes the king as only a figurehead," said Narayanman Bijuchche of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party.

The Communist rebels' leader, Prachanda, said he welcomed the resolution, but said it failed to address all the needs of the people.

"We want to make it clear that this declaration has not been able to fully address the needs and aspirations of Nepal and the Nepali people," the rebel leader, whose real name is Pushpa Kamal Dahal, said in a statement.

He said a continuing ceremonial role for the king "is against the aspiration of the people to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic."

The rebels want to completely abolish the monarchy, but have said they will leave the decision to a special assembly which is to write a new constitution.

The vote in Parliament was the most significant move it has made since the new government assumed power last month.

Thái Lan: Một ngôi chùa lâm sở giữa trung tâm thương mại náo nhiệt.
by ANCHALEE KONGRUT, Bangkok Post, May 21, 2006

Forest temple of Siam square
by ANCHALEE KONGRUT, Bangkok Post, May 21, 2006

Historic temple in green surrounds offers peaceful place for dharma meditation amid the bustle of the commercial district

Bangkok, Thailand -- Siriwan Yodsuksa has visited Siam Square in Pathumwan district almost every day for over 20 years.

Wat Pathum Wanaram on Rama I road is a green shelter in the middle of city skyscrapers in Pathumwan district. About 300 people visit the temple every day for dharma practice. — SAROT MEKSOPHAWANNAKUL

She does not go there to shop for brand-name products at luxury department stores that line the street in the bustling shopping district. Nor does she want to dine in lavish restaurants.

Her mission is different - meditation at Wat Pathum Wanaram temple, sandwiched between Siam Paragon shopping complex and Central World Plaza. She likes to pray before going to work at TOT Corp in Chaeng Wattana.

Siriwan, 42, usually leaves home from Wong Wian Yai in Thon Buri at 5am and drives to the temple on Rama I road for dharma practice and alms offering.

Siriwan said there was nothing unusual about meditating in a temple surrounded by shopping malls and skyscrapers.

"People should know this temple has been here for over a century while shopping malls came just a few decades ago. I think both can co-exist. Siam Square will have more than earthly pleasures to offer. People can also find spiritual happiness in the temple after shopping."

The spiritual happiness, unlike the goods on offer in the shops, is free, she said.

The temple is like another world. Pathum Wanaram temple has set aside nine rai of its 15-rai plot of land as a green area for people studying dharma at the Sala Phrarajasaddha Dharma Centre. It is surrounded by several huge plants, about one metre in diameter, some 100 years old.

The "forest" helps filter the air, providing natural protection from the pollution outside.

This temple was built in 1853 during the reign of King Mongkut and served as a royal retreat during the time of King Chulalongkorn.

In the early days, the temple was surrounded by rice fields and swamps filled with lotus plants. The king called the palace Wang Sa Pathum or Palace of the Lotus Pond and named the district Pathumwan. Pathum means lotus in the local dialect.

Phra Pisanpatanatorn or Chao Kun Thavorn Chittathavaro, assistant abbot of the temple and the director of the dharma centre, said forests also play an important part in Buddhist history.

"Lord Buddha was born, became enlightened and passed away in forest environment. I would say the forest is an important part of Buddhist temples for it helps create peace and tranquility," he said.

He has been in charge of the dharma centre since it opened in 1990. He also takes care of the temple plants.

Around 300 people visit the 'forest temple' every day and the number is increasing due to the centre's various activities.

Nuthathai Kriengthanasak, a 29-year-old entrepreneur, said she was surprised to see shopping centres develop around the temple. "This is another world outside Siam Square. It's peaceful and tranquil in here amid all the construction work which goes on around the clock. This is just like a country temple," she said, while attending a three-day meditation course there this week.

"When New Year revellers held a countdown at the nearby Central World Plaza this year, we concentrated and prayed in calmness, undisturbed by the noise. We were here until dawn," said Siriwan.
