Thieves nabbed after 145 rich raids on temples across Japan

October 27, 2005

OSAKA -- Two jobless men arrested for theft have admitted to stealing tens of millions of yen from Buddhist temples across the country, investigators said Thursday.

Hifumi Iriguchi, 59, and Takashi Ota, 52, both residents of Osaka, have confessed that they were involved in 145 cases of theft targeting temples in 17 prefectures from the Tohoku region in northeastern Honshu to Kyushu.

"When I previously traveled around the country for sales activities, I found that temples in the countryside often remain unlocked, and I thought it would be easy to sneak into them to steal money," Ota was quoted as telling investigators.

The two admitted that they spent part of the money they stole to travel to South Korea.

A Buddhist priest from Niigata Prefecture is furious at the two thieves.

"Temples are almost constantly unlocked during the daytime for visitors. Temples also serve as community centers, and are defenseless to malicious visitors," he said. "What the suspects did was outrageous."

In the specific case for which they were arrested, Iriguchi and Ota broke a window at a temple in Tokushima on March 3, sneaked into the building and stole about 250,000 yen and a clock among other items, police said.

However, this seems to be just the tip of the iceberg. The two admitted having netted about 38 million yen in 145 cases in 17 prefectures, investigators said.

After being released from prison in January, Iriguchi and Ota began to travel across the country and selected temples from those listed in telephone directories.

When they visited a temple, they always wore black business suits to make themselves look as if they were visiting graves. (Mainichi)
