City to celebrate Buddha's birthday

IANS, MARCH 29, 2005

KOLKATA, India -- International seminars, spiritual discourses and religious festivities will be part of a yearlong celebration planned in the city to mark the 2,550th birth anniversary of the Buddha next year.
The Mahabodhi Society, an umbrella organisation of Buddhists, has planned the celebrations that would kick off with a three-day international seminar in January.

Society president B.K. Modi, the chief organiser of the birth anniversary celebrations, has already extended invitations to Buddhist groups in Japan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bhutan, South Korea, Thailand and Myanmar.

The city had led the 2,500th birth anniversary celebrations of the Buddha as well in 1956. Then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had inaugurated the festivities.

Besides marking the occasion with a plethora of functions, 2006 would witness the launch of a film on the Buddha to be directed by Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

Modi, who will produce the English language film, is hoping to rope in Hollywood stars Richard Gere, a practising Buddhist, Sharon Stone and Goldie Hawn for the project.

Sources in the society said besides seminars and spiritual discourses in the city, several festivities have been planned in monasteries and Buddhist establishments around the country, including in northern West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

"The details of the programmes would be finalised by September," the sources said.

Plans are to open centres for practising and learning the religion in Bodh Gaya and a cultural centre in Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.

Những ngôi chùa Phật Giáo tại Korea.

By Ellie Kuykendall

Buddhist Temples in Korea

By Ellie Kuykendall

The picturesque temples of Korea are on mountaintops, in the middle of cities, and set in beautiful valleys. While size and location vary, there are certain characteristics that remain common.

The temples of Korea usually consist of several buildings. There is a main temple and one to many smaller temples. There are eating and sleeping quarters for the monks or nuns, who wear long or short light gray garments and nearly always have shaved heads.

I say 'nearly always' because my first encounter with a Buddhist monk occurred the second day after I arrived in Ulsan. Melanie, the gal I replaced at Hyundai, took me to downtown Ulsan. We stopped to have a Korean pancake (called "pajon" - a yummy confection of batter, onions and other vegetables) before entering a new pottery shop that she had spied. When we turned around, there was a monk coming toward us. In my mind I think I knew he was a monk. I asked him if I could take his picture. In perfect English he replied, "Yes, but let's go in here." I was really surprised! We entered the pottery shop where he sat down on a bench and posed.
Then he got up and came over to me. He peered at me intently and said, "Know your mind, and you will free your body of all pain." Such wisdom.

The weekend after I arrived in Ulsan, a director of a "hakwon" (private teaching institute) offered to take me to Kyongu, the city that was the capital of the Shilla Dynasty for nearly 1,000 years. It was the capital of the Korean peninsula for almost 300 years after that. Pulguk-sa is one of the most famous temples in Korea. It was built on stone terraces. When I visited Pulguk-sa, the cherry blossoms were still in bloom. The azaleas were also lovely.

My first view of a Buddhist temple took my breath away. I thought, "Yes, this is why I came to Korea."

Each temple has a gate. The gates are covered structures with colorful wooden various images of protective spirits . Here's the gate to Pulguk-sa, followed by the dragon spirit guard.
My guide for that first weekend trip to Kyongu and his darling five-year old daughter took me to the pottery village close to Kyongu. Here the buildings are all restored, and some potters work in public. Some of the famous Korean celadon is made here.
Just before Buddha's birthday, the temples all over Korea are decorated with lanterns made of plastic and paper. They are also decorated with these lanterns on other special days. The faithful come and pay a fee which allows them to purchase a lantern in a relative or friend's name. Cards are placed on the bottom of the lanterns. On Buddha's birthday in 1997, I went to a small temple (Dong Chuk-sa) near my home in Dong-Ku. with some friends from Canada. That day, the monks were serving lunch to hundreds of people. The lanterns were gorgeous!

By Catherine Joanna Cơoke.

Could you explain also what excatly your silence period is and why you're doing it?

Monday, March 14, 2005

By Catherine Joanna Cơoke,
Bản dịch của Minh Hạnh
I've made a vow to begin a year of silent practicing starting this Friday, November 12 [note: this letter was written on November 6, 2004]. What this means is that for the period of the next year, even though I live in an international community of anywhere from 10-30 people, I'll basically be by myself most of the time. Minimal written contact is allowed, but no sort of verbal communication whatsoever. Also, during most of this period I'll be staying in the temple, working and practicing, instead of travelling during the fall and spring periods as we normally do. This practice has a number of benefits that make it valuable. First of all, in society and often even in the temple, an incredible amount of energy is spent making and maintaining social relationships. This is not good or bad in itself, but sometimes our social relationships are just a way of escaping our inner drama, our feelings of loneliness, boredom, or whatever else it is we don't want to face. Keeping silence is a good way of simplifying ones life for a period of time so that all that appears and disappears in the mind can be seen for just what it is. Your mind does not necessarily become more quiet, but you can deeply digest what you experience. Though our society does not preach this kind of value system, actually one of the most valuable things we can do in our lives in fully understand ourselves. Not some idea of ourselves that other people want us to believe, which is based only on dualistic thinking. But some experience of our "True Nature" is very important, which is before thinking arises, before even speech or words, what we can call "absolute". I've tried periods of silence for up to 3 months, but there were always situations where I had to talk for some reason or another. But this time I hope not to talk at all for the next year and see what kind of result it brings. I have absolute faith that this kind of practice is beneficial for human beings, because the short periods of time I've tried before have given me some of the most insightful experiences of my life. If you've never tried this kind of experiment, I highly recommend even for a day to stop talking and see what kind experience you have.

Thailand gets tough on alms

TNA, March 29, 2005

BANGKOK, Thailand -- The government yesterday pledged to get tough on the alms trade, warning traders who sell dirty or rotten food to members of the public wishing to donate it to monks that they could face prison sentences of up to two years.
The move follows a request to the FDA from the Bureau of National Buddhism for FDA officials to inspect ready-prepared food sold in areas near to where monks make their morning alms rounds, as many monks have apparently complained of being offered food that is dirty or has been left to stand overnight.
Yesterday FDA Secretary-General Pakdee Pothisiri said that the FDA was now sending out mobile inspection units to morning markets across the country, and was asking provincial public health officials to conduct stringent inspections of the food being sold.
But he warned market traders who sold dirty or bad food that they were not only committing a sin, but also facing criminal charges, with custodial sentences of up to two years and fines of up to Bt20,000.

Sri Lankan Minister Warns Missionaries about Converting Buddhists

Dhamsara News, March 28, 2005

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- Missionary activities are not merely religious in nature but are also politically motivated activities aimed at harming social peace among Sri Lankans, says C. Liyanage Aydin, the state minister responsible for religious affairs
Buddhist Minister, Aydin, the state minister overseeing Buddhist Affairs, warned yesterday that the propaganda of missionaries in Sri Lanka is a part of politically oriented activities aimed at damaging the social peace and unity of Sri Lanka.
Missionaries are not simply spreading their religion by exercising freedom of belief but are intervening in people's freedom of belief by capitalizing on their ignorance, said Aydin, responding to a parliamentary questionnaire concerning missionary activities in Sri Lanka.
"The goal of those activities is harming the cultural, religious, national and historical unity of the people of Sri Lanka," Dhamsara news agency quoted Aydin as saying. "These are not merely religious activities and they are not only carried out by Christian clerics. We have observed doctors, nurses, engineers, Red Cross officials, human rights defenders, peace activists and language tutors conducting missionary activities."
Aydin pointed out that the duty of the Religious Affairs Directorate was to enlighten the people and eradicate ignorance, which, he said, created a convenient environment for missionaries to deceive and convert people. "Those activities have a historic background and are carried out in a well-planned manner with political motives," Aydin added.
Stating that the official number of people recorded as being converted via missionary propaganda is up ten lakhs Aydin said that it is impossible to calculate the actual figure since missionary activities are carried out covertly.

A photo trip to Tibet

PressTrust of India, March 20, 2005

New Delhi, India -- A tired old woman in tatters with hands folded and head bowed in prayer with a placard ‘China quit Tibet’ and a child waiting with flowers in its hands for the Buddha - images that reflect the perseverance and resilience of an exiled community.

These and other moving pictures were among the 230 rare photographs depicting the Tibetan socio-cultural life in exile and its impact on the Buddhist communities, on display in the Capital.A glimpse through the 200 enlargements and about 30 blowups shot by journalist-photographer and Tibetologist Vijay Kranti serves as an eye opener to how the Tibetan refugees, just about one lakh in India, have revived their identity despite a desperate situation .‘‘India today has become the world’s largest reservoir of authentic Tibetan culture. This achievement is really outstanding’, Kranti said.
