No. 0477 (Hạt Cát dịch)

ROMANISING THE TIPITAKA

Published on August 17, 2005

Thailand- Rare version of historic Buddhist text presented to Sweden under project overseen by HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, continuing the work of King Rama V. Exactly 112 years ago King Chulalongkorn commissioned publication of the Tipitaka Buddhist canon to present as a gift to Siam’s friendly nations. At the time Siam was under the threat of Western colonisation.

As the defender of the Buddhist faith, the Siamese King handed out 260 volumes of the Tipitaka Buddhist Canon to 25 countries.

In homage to King Chulalongkorn, HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana agreed to act as honorary chair of a grand project involving the publication of the world’s first Tipitaka Buddhist canon in Pali, in romanised script. The Tipitaka Buddhist Canon commissioned by King Chulalongkorn was published in Pali but in Thai script.

The Dhamma Society Fund, chaired by Siri Phetchai, undertook the momentous project of romanising the Tipitaka five years ago. So far the project has lead to the publication of a limited edition of just three handsome sets of the Tipitaka, each consisting of 40 volumes in romanised script.

The Tipitaka sets have been presented to the Constitution Court of Thailand, to the people of Sri Lanka and to the Kingdom of Sweden.

Earlier this year HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana presented the romanised version of the Tipitaka set to the people of Sri Lanka. The set is now being kept at the Office of the President of Sri Lanka.

Predominantly a Buddhist country, Sri Lanka has enjoyed a very close relationship with Thailand, particularly in terms of religious ties.

On Monday HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana presided over a ceremony at the Park Nai Lert Raffles Hotel in Bangkok to present the 40 volumes of the romanised Tipitaka to Sweden.

Jan Wihlborg and Johan Af Klimt, both retired businessmen from Sweden and long-time friends of Thailand, took part in the ceremony to formally take delivery of the Tipitaka set, which will be shipped back to Sweden and kept at Uppsala University.

Sweden was one of the countries that King Chulalongkorn paid a visit to during his European tour in the late 19th century. It was also the recipient of three of the original Tipitaka sets commissioned for publication by the Siamese King. The first copy is now kept at the Uppsala University, the second copy at the Royal Library in Stockholm, and the third copy at the Lund University.

Uppsala University will welcome the new romanised version of the Tipitaka to its library in autumn this year.

The romanised version of the Tipitaka Buddhist Canon is based on the revised version compiled by the Thevarada Buddhists in Southeast Asia, who convened in a grand council between 1953 and 1956 to work on the project.

This revised version was completed in 1957 in time to commemorate the 2,500-year anniversary of the foundation of Buddhism by the Lord Buddha. The year was particularly significant because it also marked the mid-way period of Buddhism, which, according to a Buddhist belief, would last 5,000 years after its birth.

The Tipitaka Buddhist canon consists of three main parts: the vinaya, the suttana and the abhidhamma. The vinaya covers the rules or procedures that Buddhist monks have to follow according to the Lord Buddha’s instruction. These rules clearly define the rigid structure that the Buddhist monks adhere to. The rules are aimed at preventing complications arising from the interaction of Buddhist monks with the outside world.

The suttana represents a collection of the long discourses of the Lord Buddha. There are 34 discourses on morality and wisdom. In suttana, the Lord Buddha takes into consideration the intellectual level of his audience and preaches his dhamma in accessible terms with story lines and examples.

The abhidhamma goes to the heart of the ultimate reality as discovered by the Lord Buddha. In it the Lord Buddha analyses every phenomenon into its ultimate constituents. All relative concepts such as man, animals or other things are reduced to their ultimate elements, which are then clearly defined, systematically classified and arranged.

“We are quite honoured to received the Tipitaka set, which is also a good foundation of the development of the wisdom and culture in Thailand,” said Af Klimt, who has devoted his life to the study of Buddhism. This also reflects the close relationship between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Kingdom of Sweden, he said.

Af Klimt said that there are some 50,000 Buddhists in Sweden, 20,000 of whom are Thais and the others a mix of Sri Lankan and other nationalities and cultures living in the Nordic country.

Wihlborg added that interest in Buddhism is on the increase, not only in Sweden but also elsewhere in Europe.

The miniature Buddhist Vihara of Botswana
by Rohan L. Jayetilleke, Daily News (Sri Lanka), August 10, 2005
Gaborone (Botswana) ── The Republic of Botswana is a tiny landlocked country neighboured by Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, and South Africa. It was formerly a British Protectorate known as Bechuanaland, with a current population of 1.6 million.

Most sadly Botswana has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS. However, the country has a booming industry in diamond and beef exports. The capital is Gaborone. The capital Gaborone has all the modern state-of-the-art buildings, roads and other facilities.

The commercial sector is monopolised by the Whites, Indians and Chinese. There are about five Myanmar Buddhist families in Gaborone, who have become naturalised in their new homeland. The climate of the country varies from sweltering heat to dry and biting cold.

There is a small Buddhist Vihara in West Gaborone, with no resident monk, and a Myanmar bhikkhu from Pretoria, South Africa comes to Gaborone to conduct religious activities and meditation retreats on special days like Vesak and New Year.

This Vihara came up due to the efforts of Sri Lankan Buddhists resident in Gaborone and a few Myanmar and Thai Buddhist. The Sri Lankan community is around one thousand and it was through their generosity the land was purchased and the Vihara built.

There is a small stupa in Sri Lankan tradition, an open assembly hall with a marble Buddha image and a bell. The bell weighing 76 kgs and cast at Tampawaddy in Mandalay, Myanmar, was donated by the Myanmar members of the Botswana Buddhist Association. There are two Bodhi trees in the precincts, one planted by the Sri Lankans and the other by Myanmar Buddhists. This is a Theravada Buddhist Vihara, as Myanmar like Sri Lanka is a Theravada Buddhist country.

Any Sri Lankan or Myanmar Buddhist in Botswana, reading this website, (www.dailynews.lk), contact the writer through Daily News and provide more details of their Viharas and the contact address of the Botswana Buddhist Association.
