Thai Buddhists win beer battle
August 10, 2005

Bangkok - Thailand's new finance minister on Wednesday indefinitely postponed consideration to list major brewer Thai Beverages on the stock exchange, prolonging a seesaw battle with opponents to the stock offering.

The producer of the country's best-selling Chang Beer and a top-selling whisky had planned to raise more than one billion dollars in April in what could have been the country's largest initial public offering (IPO).

Massive protests by thousands of Buddhist monks and anti-alcohol campaigners postponed the listing, but after a review by regulators the brewer quietly filed to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand last month.

"I have asked them (regulators) to postpone consideration of Thai beverages because I need more time to study the matter," Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya, who was moved to the post one week ago, told reporters.

"I just assumed the office so I need more time to carefully scrutinise this issue."

Since the July 20 filing, thousands of protesters mobilised by a coalition of 128 anti-vice groups staged rallies at the finance ministry, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the stock exchange offices.

SEC secretary general Theerachai Phuvanartnaranubala said an upcoming SEC meeting would not discuss the Thai Beverages issue.

"The finance minister has told us to postpone consideration of Beer Chang's request, and we will comply with his instruction. I cannot tell you when we will consider the request again," Theerachai said.

Opponents of the listing warn that Thai road deaths would rise because of increased cases of drunk driving.

Public health statistics indicate some 72 percent of road accidents in Thailand are caused by drunk driving, leaving thousands dead or injured.

Thailand already ranks fifth in the world for per capita alcohol consumption, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. - AFP

Botanical Garden chosen for prayer wheel site
By DANA DUGAN, Idaho Mountain Express, Aug 5, 2005

Zen monk begins creation of new garden

Ketchum, Idaho (USA) -- The Sawtooth Botanical Garden, south of Ketchum, was recently given a rare honor that was unveiled at a reception Wednesday, Aug. 3. The public gardens were chosen as the site of a "Garden of Compassion" to be built in honor of the 14th Dalai Lama's visit to the Wood River Valley Sept. 10 through Sept. 12.

While in the valley, the Dalai Lama will address several gatherings. The main event is a "Healing Address" on Sept. 11, the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast, when His Holiness will speak to 10,000 people at the Wood River High School in Hailey.

At the Botanical Garden reception, patrons and board members met with the Colorado-based landscape designer Martin Mosko, who was chosen to lead the garden's creation.

Mosko is uniquely qualified to create the garden. He is the owner of Marpa & Associates, a 30-year-old landscape design company, and he's an ordained Zen Buddhist monk. In addition, Mosko is the abbot of the Hakubai Temple in Boulder, and heir to the lineage of Tenzan Keibun Otokawa Roshi. He is also the author of the recently released book "Landscape as Spirit: Creating a Contemplative Garden."

A soft spoken and peaceful man, he said the new garden will "hopefully be a world-class alpine garden." It is to be located on the northeast side of the Sawtooth Botanical Garden's main building in a 15,000 square feet space.

The Sawtooth Botanical Garden is located near the intersection of state Highway 75 and Gimlet Road.

The project was initiated when the "His Holiness the Dalai Lama visits Sun Valley" event organizers—in particular Ketchum resident Kiril Sokoloff, the guiding force behind the visit—decided they would like the Tibetan prayer wheel linked to the event to be in a garden. The prayer wheel, which was made in Dharamsala, India—where the Dalai Lama has lived in exile from Tibet—will be the focal point in the "Garden of Infinite Compassion." The Dalai Lama will bless the prayer wheel on Monday, Sept. 12, in a private ceremony with the Buddhist community. Thereafter, it will be accessible to the public.

When she learned of the commission, Anita Northwood, director of the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, called Panayoti Kelaidis, a rock-garden expert with the Denver Botanical Gardens. According to her, he said, "If you can get Martin Mosko to do this project, it'll be a coup. He'd be the perfect person."

"She called at his suggestion and I took a flight up the next day," Mosko said. "The garden is to be both contemplative and celebratory, where the community may meditate and be inspired by the beauty of the natural world.

"It will have an alpine theme because of the high, pure atmosphere, with very small plants such as osteospurmum, arabis, arnica, alpine asters, poppies and orchid, columbine and Lewisii. This is a great altitude here (for this kind of garden). We could have as many as 3,000 varieties.

He added, "Prayer wheels are moved water. So, we'll have a river that is really recirculated water, but will look like a branch of the existing stream. There will be an eight-foot sunken garden with over 400 tons of stone from Montana. The 16 stones represent the 16 Arhats, who serve as protectors."

An aspen grove and alpine plants will encompass the expanse of land now being cleared at the site. Mosko expects to be laying the enormous rocks in place this weekend and working straight through on the project until Aug. 16. He has told his clients he isn't available currently, except for prearranged lectures to which he was already committed.

"When I told them it was because of a garden for the Dalai Lama they felt that was a good excuse as any," he joked. "I have never met His Holiness but inadvertently he is kind of responsible for my meeting my wife." When asked to elaborate, he laughed and said it was way too long a story to tell. "The Dalai Lama is revered by all Buddhists because of his magnetism, sincerity and purity of heart. I hope to be here (when he blesses the prayer wheel)."

Mosko said the garden will encompass three aspects: the physical, the energetic and the metaphysical.

The financial aspect is one that also cannot be overlooked. The Sawtooth Botanical Garden's board president, Keith Pangborn, said they "were extremely excited by the wonderful opportunity," and encouraged people to pledge donations. They expect the three stages of the garden to cost a total of $250,000, and are looking to completing the first phase by the Dalai Lama's visit.

Mosko may be a Zen Buddhist but he is also a businessman. "With sufficient money, we can complete the majority of the work by the time he comes. We really need to raise money quickly."

Northwood did a bit of fund raising at the reception. "Pledges came in at approximately $60,000," she said. "We have a long ways to go. It's very exciting and Martin is just a lovely man.

"We're delighted to have this very special, spiritual prayer wheel in the garden and are hoping that people will find this garden a place for all denominations to find peace and harmony. Fund raising is still on going and we'd love donations of any kind."

The prayer wheel created in honor of His Holiness' visit will have housing and turning mechanisms built by valley artist Larry Meyers.

For more information or to donate, call the Botanical Garden at 726-9358.

Appreciating an illustrious Buddhist writer

BY VEN. BHIKKU Bodhi President of Buddhist Publication Society
Daily News (Sri Lanka), July 27, 2005

ON December 27, 2004, the day after the tsunami disaster struck Sri Lanka, another disaster struck the small world of Buddhist publishing in this island-nation. The prolific Buddhist writer and editor, A.G.S. Kariyawasam, passed away at his home due to heart failure.

His death left his wife and two daughters without a loving husband and father, it left the Buddhist Publication Society, the island's respected publisher of Buddhist books, destitute of a capable and diligent editor.

During my tenure as editor for the Buddhist Publication Society, I worked very closely with Kariyawasam for nine years, from the time he joined our staff in early 1992 until I left Sri Lanka for health reasons in 2001.

Even before he joined us, I had already heard about his service to the Encyclopedia of Buddhism.

After I left the island, he continued to work for the BPS right up until his sudden death half a year ago, at the age of 71.

During our nine years together, I always found Kariyawasam an extremely easy person to work with. He had immense knowledge-both of classical languages including literary Sinhala, Sanskrit, and Pali and of Buddhist doctrine-yet he bore this knowledge lightly, without undue pride or ostentation.

Though not exuberantly extroverted, he was friendly when approached and when one brought up a topic in the Dhamma to discuss with him he always showed keen interest and a willingness to learn, not merely to use the occasion as an opportunity to display his own formidable erudition.

When he first joined the BPS, he became my assistant in the English-language division of the Society and he helped me greatly in editing and proofing our books.

But because Ven. Piyadassi, the editor of the Sinhala-language division, was often overseas or burdened with commitments in Colombo, Kariyawasam soon assumed the greater share of work in the Sinhala-language division as well.

He edited many of the Damsaks, both new booklets and reprints, and took the initiative in selecting titles for the BPS's new line of full-size Sinhala publications, Kalyana Mithuru books.

When I left the island he managed both domains simultaneously, the Sinhala and English, though by this time he also had assistance in both domains.

He was an indefatigable worker and could re-edit old books, read proofs, correct manuscripts, etc. with relentless energy.

Yet despite the volume of literary work he handled, he would always be available when a visitor to the BPS came with questions about the Dhamma that other staff members could not answer or when a correspondent asked Dhamma questions in a letter.

Apart from his editorial assignments, Kariyawasam translated two important treatises by Sri Lankan monastic authors: Ven. Matara Sri Gnanarama's The Seven Contemplations of Insight (Sattanupassana) and Ven. Rerukane Chandavimala's Analysis of the Perfections (Paramitaprakaranaya).

He also published a Wheel booklet of his own, Buddhist Ceremonies and Rituals of Sri Lanka, and a Bodhi Leaf, The Bodhisattva Concept.

At the present time, persons with the knowledge about Dhamma of the kind that Kariyawasam possessed are rarities, whether in the Sangha or amongst the lay community.

His death at an age when he might still have been active for another decade is thus a great loss to the Buddhist Publication Society, the readership it served, and Sri Lanka's own position of eminence in the Theravada Buddhist world.

May A.G.S. Kariyawasam reap the fruits of the great merits he must have acquired through his selfless service to the Dhamma and may these merits lead him smoothy to the supreme peace of Nibbana.

By WAVENEY ANN MOORE, Times Staff Writer
Published August 10, 2005
ST.

ST. PETERSBURG - On hands and knees, the two men and two women bowed low before the giant bronze Buddha.

Three times they repeated the ritual, rising to their feet between each prostration.

Fifteen monks and two nuns - some of whom had traveled from Texas, Canada and Orlando - looked on as they made religious pledges and received Buddhist names Sunday at the Chua Phat Phap Buddhist Temple, 1770 62nd Ave. N.

That day Cuc Thi Nguyen, Chan Van Vu, Peter Loc Le Nguyen and Aleada Aine Siragusa officially became part of the Buddhist family. It's one Siragusa says she'll never forget.

"I woke up that morning feeling very happy and excited and it was more beautiful than I had imagined," said the St. Petersburg woman, the only Westerner among the new Buddhists.

"I like the kneeling and the bowing," she said. "It's very humbling. You're bowing to the spirit within. It's a beautiful practice."

At times during the brief ceremony, which was conducted in the Pali and Vietnamese languages, Siragusa, 55, was the beneficiary of a little prompting.

In the temple redolent with incense, the Most Venerable Thich Ho Giac led her through her pledges as she repeated them in English and in halting Pali. He also explained the meaning of her new Buddhist name, Khema. It was the name of a famous Buddhist nun who was versed in the teachings of Buddha, the monk said in English.

"I thought it was very kind of him and very generous of him to take the time to do that for me," Siragusa said.

Taking turns, each new Buddhist promised to abstain from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying and intoxication. They also recited that they will go to the faith's three jewels, or basic values, "for refuge." During an interview, the Venerable Dang Pham Jotika, a monk visiting from Houston, explained that the faith's three jewels are the Buddha, representing enlightenment or wisdom; the Dharma, the true characteristics of nature; and the Sangha, the community or support of the Buddhist family.

For Siragusa, it was a momentous day. Sunday's service, though, also honored the congregation's elders and ancestors. More than 300 people attended.

Siragusa, who was brought up Roman Catholic, has been practicing Buddhism for about 24 years. The sculptor and painter said she does not believe that one religion excludes the other.

"You don't have to give up your other beliefs. To me, I don't like to say right or wrong. Both teach love . . . but the teachings of Buddha have been really good for our lives," she said of herself and her family.

"St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, when they experienced union with God, it's the same as when a Buddhist experiences enlightenment. There's one God and when one has that intense experience with God, it's the same."

Her husband, Gaetano, 59, also was brought up Catholic. He has been practicing Buddhism for more than a quarter of a century.

Siragusa relied on his guidance and weekly classes conducted in English at the temple to prepare for Sunday's ceremony. The couple's daughter, Leela, a student at Florida State University, was unable to attend.

Siragusa plans to frame the certificate she received Sunday and put it with her husband's near a 6-foot statue of Buddha in the family's meditation area.
