We must revive Pali in our schools

Lionel Wijesiri

During the early 1960s, when I was a secondary school student, I had the good fortune of being taught Pali as a subject. Dhammapada was one of our Texts. We have been motivated by our teachers to do an in-depth study of the Dhammapada. As a result a great number of Buddhist scholars were born out of our generation.

What does a young Buddhist know about Pali language today - the origin, the history, the relevance of the language to Buddhism? We should have introduced Pali judiciously from an early stage, and the increased use of it should have been gradually developed so that an affinity for the Buddha's language is evolved.

The origins of the Pali language, like those of many languages, are lost in the vagaries of time. For centuries, the Theravada assumed that Pali was the language spoken by the Buddha in his teachings, and was therefore synonymous with Magadhi, the language of the Northern Indian kingdom of Magadha where the Buddha lived and taught. This identification of Pali with the language of Magadha appears very early in Theravada literature- possibly as early as the 1st Century A.D

However, beginning in the 19th Century Pali was submitted to the linguistic examinations of European scholars, and it began to be apparent that Pali could not have been the same language spoken by the Buddha. Fragments of Magadhi inscriptions and texts were discovered, and it was clear that Pali was not the same language as these fragments. Furthermore, analysis of inscriptions from the time of King Asoka revealed that Pali had its roots in a Western language of Northern India- far from the realm of the Buddha.

It is theorized by many, that Pali was in fact at one point a hybrid sort of lingua franca, (language used for convenience) used over a large area of Northern India centuries after the life of the Buddha.

The Tripitaka, preserved perhaps in the original language of the Buddha (an Eastern North Indian tongue), encountered the Pali language at some point in history- most likely during the period when Pali was widely present in Northern India- and was recorded in that language.

The entrance of such a large body of teaching in a foreign language altered the character of Pali itself, acquiring many features of the original tongue, and making it that much more difficult to find the real origins of the language.

Not all analysts believe that this is the final answer about the roots of Pali, however. Some researchers continue to believe that Pali has its origin in the kingdom of Magadha. Rhys Davids, one of the earliest Western scholars of Pali believed that it was a north-eastern dialect, most likely from the kingdom of Koshala.

Whatever its initial origins, Pali at some point became the language used to preserve and pass down the Tripitaka. For at least the first century after the death of the Buddha, the texts were not written down, and remained an oral tradition. They were committed to writing in Sri Lanka most likely during the 1st Century BC, during the reign of King Vattagamani. These Pali texts were written on palm leaves, as an attempt to preserve them in the face of a threat to the Buddhist order- most likely, a war of invasion from Southern India.

It is unknown when Pali ceased to be a cradle language, and became relegated to the religious realm. Even after its death in the rest of society, Pali continued to be used within the temples and monasteries, not only to preserve the texts, but also to compose commentaries, and to allow communication between Theravada monks from different nations.

In the various Theravada countries where it is spoken, it is written in the local script, and often pronounced or intoned according to local variations in the language.

Two main great periods of Pali literature are generally identified by Pali scholars. The first, coinciding with the commission of the Tripitaka to writing in or around the 1st Century. The second was in the 5th Century, the rise of Sanskrit literature prompted the first renaissance of Pali, begun almost single-handedly by the scholar-monk Buddhaghosa and his fellow monks at the Mahavihara.

The 20th Century has perhaps seen the latest rebirth for Pali, though the roots of this swell lie in the 19th Century. Interest in Pali from the West, best embodied by the foundation of the Pali Text Society in 1881 to promote the study of Pali in the non-Asian world.

The establishment of formal departments of Sanskrit studies have created a great deal of interest in the language at the academic level, and a thriving community of scholars worldwide continues to unravel mysteries of the old tongue long thought lost.

Increased popular interest in Buddhism in the West has helped prompt some of the first new translations of Pali texts, as well as the translation of previously unstudied works.

The creation of electronic editions of the Tripitaka made the language more accessible to scholars and laymen (in both the religious and secular sense) alike, and have helped to ensure the preservation of the language and its literature.

I believe its time we introduce Pali as a subject in schools and, plan for the revival of the language among laymen, at least, by the beginning of the next decade. Let us use this great language once again more extensively as a lingua franca among Buddhist population.

Diễn giảng khôi hài tăng thêm thú vị giáo pháp cho giới trẻ.

Published on October 12, 2005

‘Laurel & Hardy monks’ spice up Dhamma

Published on October 12, 2005

Two Buddhist monks have become a big hit among young audiences in the last few years with their act of traditional intonations of Buddhist tales and comic preaching.

With a star quality to rival the heartthrobs of stage and screen, Phra Khru Palad Rachan Ariyo and Phra Maha Natthawat Jitrangsee have a gruelling schedule that sees them performing up to 600 shows a year. They once did a record 74 performances in a month.

The monks are both based in Wat Wang San in Phetchabun’s Wang Pong district.

Phra Rachan said the preaching sessions average about 10,000 people a show and never fewer than 2,000. The duo entertained a record crowd of 35,000 in Bangkok a few years ago.
They have 54 shows booked this month and more requests are expected.

One of the factors that contribute to their popularity is their Laurel-and-Hardy appeal – Phra Rachan, 40, is tall and thin, while Phra Natthawat, 25, is remarkably shorter and chunky. The junior monk often goes by the nickname “Phra Maha Tuinui” (“Chubby Monk”).

But Phra Rachan’s popularity spans well beyond the shores of Thailand. He occasionally gives sermons to Asian Buddhists in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, both in solo performances and accompanied by Phra Natthawat.

A native of Wang Pong district, Phra Rachan entered the monkhood at the age of 19. Phra Natthawat is a native of Phitsanulok’s Phrom Phiram district and initially ordained as a novice monk at 18 and as a monk at 20.

Phra Rachan takes the lead during the preaching sessions and Phra Natthawat takes a back-up role. The senior monk utilises the question-and-answer method with his partner, along with occasional nagging and sarcasm to spice up the preaching.

Phra Rachan, now the abbot at Wat Wang San, said his childhood dream of becoming a singer played a major role in his move toward intonations.

He said he persuaded Phra Natthawat to duet with him after noticing his good intonation skills as a novice monk.

Though popular with young audiences, the comic routines have often sparked controversy and celebrity. But Phra Rachan says the comedy is merely meant to draw laughter and make the preaching less boring for the younger generation.

“Once I grab their attention, I can teach them Lord Buddha’s teachings,” he said.

“The comedy and jokes I employ actually work well when it comes to drawing people’s attention. Otherwise people would fall asleep or leave after five minutes like in the old days.”

He said he has not received any warnings from senior monks or the Sangha Supreme Council, the regulatory body of Buddhist monks. He claims the only source of criticism over his comic style comes from newspaper columns.

While the monks use popular songs and invent parody lyrics to grab the attention of audiences, there is a serious side to the Dhamma teachings. Phra Rachan says the only concern about using popular songs in sermons is that monks are barred from singing.

“But I sing with good intent to make people interested in sermons, not to please myself, which is restricted by the Holy Rule of Disciplines.”

Only around 20 Buddhist monks in Thailand can perform traditional intonations of Buddhist tales, which mostly feature the “Ten Chapters of Mahajataka” stories, but few have chosen to utilise comedy in their performances.

Phra Rachan said his sermons mostly focus on telling young people to love and care for their parents. In the case of high-school children, the content will also involve warnings about narcotics.

He said he earns money from audience collections by temples that invite him to perform, but he often performs free for high-school students.

The monk spent about Bt10 million of his earnings renovating Wat Wang San, where he built a large shelter, a crematorium and a chapel. His next project is a shelter for the local elderly.

All India Buddhist Society Passes Resolutions for Tibet
TYC[Monday, October 10, 2005 14:30]

On the occasion of the GOLDEN JUBILEE YEAR of the formation of The Buddhist Society Of India, “ALL INDIA BUDDHIST CONFERENCE” was held on 8th and 9th October 2005 at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. The conference witnessed the gracious presence of several personages including Respected Banval Upatiss Nayak Theere (President, Buddhist Society of Sri Lanka), Mr. Ramdas Aathwale (Member, Lok Sabha), Mayor of Bhopal, former ministers of the state, Buddhist Priest from various monasteries around the country and others. The conference was also marked by the presence of around 1200 peoples from all over India. Among various issues discussed during this 2-day conference, the issue relating to Tibetan independence and the dismal state of Buddhism and its followers in Tibet was also included.

Mr. Tsering Dhundup represented Tibetan Young Buddhist Association, formerly formed by Tibetan Youth Congress to realize its goal of preserving and promoting Tibet’s rich culture and religion. While speaking on the topic “The expectations from Indian Buddhists in Tibet’s Struggle for Independence” he stressed on various reasons why Indian Buddhist should render their support in realizing the aspiration of six million Tibetans. He stressed that Tibet—right from its ancient history—has great cultural and religious affinity with India.

Most important of all, Tibet’s independence is in the interest of India and Indians as it is greatly related to India’s security, economy, culture and environment. In addition, he also briefed the hall packed audience about the wretched state of Buddhism and its followers in Tibet. How the monastic institutions and their activities are all controlled by the Chinese authorities such as by setting up of “Democratic Management Committees”. He also urged the Indian Buddhists to support Tibetan cause by: educating peoples about Tibet and setting up various support groups in their area or region, writing to their MPs and MLA’s to raise the Tibetan issue in the parliament, Boycotting goods made in china and passing a resolution through this conference supporting and recognizing the independence of Tibet.

On the second day of the conference Mr. Choekyong Wangchuk (India Tibet Coordination Office) highlighted the dismal state of Tibetan Buddhists in Tibet by citing the examples of Tulku Tenzin Delek. He also pointed out that under the china’s vicious design to destroy Tibetan culture and religion, thousands of monasteries were destroyed and monks were thrown out, such as the recent case of Serthar Institute. Various Indian dignitaries also expressed their concern for the Tibetan cause. Mr (Prof.) Jogender Kawade, former minister of parliament stated. “Through this conference we all must pressurize and question Indian government, UN and all Buddhist community in world whose abject silence is going to destroy Tibet and Tibetans”. While, Mr. P. G. Jyotikar, Trustee Chairman of BSI avowed, “Tibetans who consider us as their Guru are in great problem and it is our moral duty to help them [shishya]”.

On the final day, a resolution relating to Tibet was unanimously passed that says, “This conference believes that Tibet was an independent nation before the communist China invaded it and forced His Holiness and thousands of Tibetans to flee their homeland. This conference passes the resolution urging Indian government to give Tibet the status of an independent nation and recognize Tibetan Government in Exile under the Leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The resolution also urges the Indian government to pressurize Chinese government to release all religious leader including XI Panchen Lama and Tulku Tenzin Delek”. All in all this conference proved to be another stepping stone in gaining broad-based support for the Tibetan cause.

Hospital fears sect’s flood omen

Published on October 11, 2005

A prediction that Bangkok will face inundation this week has been taken seriously by the management of a well-known city hospital, which has told its doctors and staff to get ready for possibly the worst floods in many decades. The prediction is based on warnings from Dr Kanjira Kanjanaket, president of Vitheedham-Vithee-thai Club, a Buddhist group.

The warnings have been circulating among email users for weeks.

Somehow, it has become an internal warning issued by Bang-kok’s Vichaiyut Hospital as doctors and staff were told to prepare for the possibility of Bangkok facing a huge flood today and tomorrow.

The internal warning was signed by the hospital’s president Dr Som-pone Bunyakupata.

Co-incidentally, the Royal Irri-gation Department and the Meteo-rological Department also warned of the possibility of heavy water flows from the North, high tides and the forecast of thunderstorms in the central region in the middle of this month.

“Water from the three sources could probably cause inundation as bad as in 1939 when Bangkok was submerged for three months,” the hospital’s internal memo reads.

The memo asks hospital staff to prepare for the possible disaster.

Punnee Suasajja, the supervisor of the Out Patient Division (OPD) and assistant to the president, said the message is an internal warning for doctors and staff, and was not meant to cause public panic.

“As a hospital, we have to be on alert at all times, as our patients could be affected,” she said, adding the hospital has prepared sandbags and cleared drains to prevent floodwater getting into the basement area where patients’ records and the electricity control room are located.

“We want to make sure that despite flooding, we are still able to take care of our patients as usual,” Punnee said.

According to Dr Kanjira’s prediction, this series of natural disasters - the worst in 500 years - could hit the country between October 11 and 29.

There would be a huge flood on October 11, huge waves between October 13 and 14, flash floods from forests on October 18, an earthquake around October 21-23 and a tornado on October 29.

Thiradej Tangprapruthikul, head of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Drainage and Sewerage Department, said the water level in the Chao Phya River is still not a concern because there had been no rain over the past few days.

Thiradej said the Rama VI and Chao Phya dams currently release only 1,500 cubic metres per second into the river, which could cope with up to 2,500 cubic metres per second.

Three other dams that affect the Chao Phya River have not yet released their water, he added.

“If there is no rain for the next two days, it won’t be a problem,” he said.

But if high tides in the middle and end of the month coincide with rain and heavy river flow from the North, Bangkok might be at risk of flooding.

Smith Dhammasaroj, a vice minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and in charge of the National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC), said damaging earthquakes and tornadoes as predicted by the divination were difficult to believe due to Thailand’s geographic location.

Pennueng Vanijchai, associate professor at the Asian Institute of Technology, said there were two active faults in the country which could affect the Srinakarin Dam and Khao Leam Dam but little possibility of an earthquake.
