Vài hôm trước, anh gửi một email thông báo rằng anh đang tiến tới “The Big Show- Màn Trình Diễn Vĩ Ðại”

A long journey to look inside, find one's self
Published April 26, 2006

When young people in their early 20s start looking for the meaning of life, they usually find it quickly.

When it happens to those of us hovering about 50, look out. Things are bound to get intense.

Today, Mark Winwood is starting a life-changing adventure, and thanks to technology, we can take this emotional ride with him.

As you read this, the 54-year-old journalist who specializes in legal issues should be nearly to the Himalayan mountains in India. He planned to flee the 109-degree temperatures in Delhi by train, escaping its filthy brown air for cooler mountain temperatures.

Winwood has lived in Yalaha for the past three years, recovering from a devastating divorce and the bust of his legal-information dot-com company in New York City. He picked Yalaha to be near his three children, who live in Longwood. A few days ago, he sent e-mail announcing that he's headed for "the big show."

This all began last year, when Winwood spent a month wandering through India, ending at Dharamsala, home of the Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, and the Tibetan government in exile. (The Chinese occupation of Tibet began in 1949, and since then, teachers and religious leaders have kept their traditions, cultural and spiritualism alive by living elsewhere.)

While Winwood was in Dharamsala, he immersed himself in various Tibetan Buddhist cultural programs. In a cooking class, he befriended the instructor, a fellow named Singhi, who escaped to India. Winwood wrote Singhi's story, which readers can find in the online version of the Times of Tibet at www.timesoftibet.com/arti cles/493/1/The-Brother.

That tour was not enough to satisfy Winwood. Now, he is following his heart back to India, seeking more of the secrets of Buddhism.

"At the center of my intentions is understanding well enough to capture and explain [to myself and others] how it is that people living under such hardship, seeing their culture being eaten away by Western influences on a daily basis, forced to live in exile from a land that is so rich in geographic, cultural, spiritual, historical and personal importance and beauty . . . how is it that they are so compassionate and centered and present?" Winwood wrote in an e-mail on the eve of his departure Sunday.

"No doubt the Buddhism plays a role, but to what degree, and exactly how?"

Winwood is contemplating a book from this tour, but the real genesis of his trip seems to be a different search -- that lifelong quest to uncover what really lurks inside oneself and to learn how it meshes with the rest of the world.

Some answers may emerge starting May 10, when he begins a retreat at a small Tibetan Buddhist center in the forests above Dharamsala.

"Travelling solo can be very lonesome at times," Winwood wrote.

So he has a computer with him and plans to write an online account of his adventures. He hopes you'll respond with thoughts and observations to yawinwood@yahoo.com. His story is at http://mwinwood.blogspot.com, where you can still read accounts of his travels last year.

"My eyes and ears will be wide open, and I will follow my intuitions," he promised.

Japanese-Afghan team tries to catalog Buddhist ruins

KABUL (Kyodo) A joint Japan-Afghanistan team that is trying to preserve Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage has confirmed the existence of Buddhist ruins near Kabul.

The joint study was undertaken by an Afghan archaeological research institute and Japan's National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in an area near Lake Koul-e Heshmatkhan in southern Kabul.

They found the foundation of a Buddhist temple that was used to house the Buddha's ashes. It is located under a police station south of the lake.

The excavation of the ruins of Tappe-e Narenj Buddhism located on the western side of the lake is under way. Experts believe the remains of a fifth-century Buddhist temple are scattered around the lake.

The Chinese Buddhist novel "Journey to the West" (1590s) cites the area as a place that the Buddhist monk Xuan Zang (602-664) passed through on the way home from India in the seventh century. He chronicled the area's geography and culture in an account of his travels in the Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Region.

Kazuya Yamauchi, director of the Japanese institute's regional environmental research office and a participant in the survey, said a detailed examination should prove that Xuan Zang took the path at the foot of the mountains in the southern section of Kabul.

This year, a French survey team is expected to look for the capital Bactria, which was the ancient Greek name of the country between the Hindu Kush and the Amu Darva. Its capital, Bactra, (now Balkh), was located in what is now Afghanistan and southern Tajikistan. The Bactrian kingdom lasted from 250 to 125 B.C.

The Tillya Tepe (Golden Hill) "Bactrian Gold" hoard, a collection of thousands of ornaments, found in the northern Afghan Province of Jawzjan in the late 1970s, was put on display at President Hamid Kharzai office in February.

The collection was missing during the country's prolonged civil war and the Taliban's Buddhist purges.
