A Fourth Turning of the Wheel?

by Christopher Queen, Harvard University, Published on the Buddhist Channel, June 8, 2005
Cambridge, MA (USA) -- One way of looking at the coming of Buddhism to the West, and the beginnings of the true interpenetration of these profound worldviews, is to see it as a fourth yana [vehicle]. If we look at "Buddhism" as a tradition and we use that term in the singular we're really covering a multitude of practices and beliefs. To focus on the kinds of beliefs and practices that people like ourselves are attempting in the name of Buddhism raises fundamental questions about whether we're doing something brand new, or whether in fact the seeds of what we're doing were planted by Shakyamuni Buddha twenty-five hundred years ago.

To my way of thinking, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (1891-1956) is the most articulate and perhaps radical spokesman for a new turning of the wheel. Ambedkar, I think, really went to the heart of this problem, and left us all with a provocative vision of Buddhism for the modern world.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar
He was born among the so-called "untouchables" in India, but through his remarkable genius he became one of the most prominent personalities of his time. After India achieved independence in 1947, Ambedkar became the first law minister in independent India (what we might call the Attorney General). As such, he was the principal architect of India's Constitution. It's the world's longest democratic constitution, and includes many
articles against the practice of un-touch-ability. It also provides for what we call affirmative action; people from all backgrounds should have access to education, scholarships and government jobs, but the preferences would be given to the lowest people in society. Ambedkar was responsible for all that.
In the last five years of his life he made good on a promise he made in 1935, "I was born a Hindu, but I'm determined not to die a Hindu. I'm going to figure out which of the religions offers me and my community the most dignity and humanity." Many who knew him and study him think Ambedkar had Buddhism in mind all along, because he was deeply moved by a book on the life of the Buddha given him upon graduation from high school. But if
he had declared himself a Buddhist in the 1930s he would have lost a lot of his clout as a negotiator with the British and with other Hindus like Gandhi in the drama of emerging independence. So he held off until 1951 when he retired from the government, and spent the last five years of his life preparing for a huge conversion ceremony on October 14th, 1956, which is the traditional date of Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism.
The year 1956 saw the worldwide celebration of the twenty-five hundredth year of the birth of Buddha Shakyamuni. So the date and the place, Nagpur in central India, a city which was associated with the preservation of Buddhist teachings by the Nagas, the serpent people, was highly symbolic of the rebirth of Buddhism in a land which had seen no Buddhism for
virtually a thousand years. Nearly a half-million untouchables took refuge at Ambedkar's conversion ceremony; and then six weeks later, he died of a long-standing illness.
In the years since his great conversion, Ambedkar had become a symbol of hope for low-caste people throughout India but his Buddhist movement since then has had to struggle along with support from outsiders like Sangharakshita and his British Buddhist followers, though it also attracted some talented leaders within India and the untouchable community. Where it's going, and whether it's growing and flourishing, is anybody's guess. But we have Ambedkar's own thoughts and writings to consider for our purposes today.

By Ashley Lawson
(May 30, 2005)

Virtual reality, meditation blend in Cape Cod course

Virtual reality and meditation may soon be used therapeutically to counter the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder and similar conditions.

By Ashley Lawson
(May 30, 2005)

Virtual reality isn’t just for entertainment any more. It may be one of the best therapies available for people suffering from psychological illnesses such as posttraumatic stress disorder.

James Spira, lecturer at an upcoming course on “Meditation as Medicine,” said that using virtual reality to return a person to a traumatic event could help decrease the aftershock.

The course is hosted by the Cape Cod Institute and will take place Aug. 29 through Sept. 2. During the event, Spira will use mental therapies, especially meditation, to teach participants how to improve their health and well-being and enable them to teach these practices to others.

“When we put people in the environment that’s most worrisome for them and teach them how to stay relaxed during it, we’ve found this is the most highly effective approach for these problems,” he said.

For example, Spira said, people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder following a war can experience a battle using virtual reality and be taught to remain calm during the stressful situation, helping to alleviate the disorder.

“One of the difficulties with performing optimally is that our worry and vigilance takes us into the future to such an extent that it’s difficult for us to be fully absorbed in the moment,” said Spira, adding that meditation can help a person live fully in the present and be more efficient.

During the course, participants will learn about these therapies by listening to lectures and practicing what they have been taught.

Spira said he would incorporate other technologies to show the effects of meditation. For example, he will use an electroencephalogram, or EEG, to scan participants’ brains while they meditate or experience emotions like anger to show how brain waves change during these states.

“This workshop will look at thousands-of-years-old meditation techniques combined with the most modern high-tech machinery that we have,” said Spira.

After learning these techniques of meditation and their benefits, Spira said, medical health professionals, athletic coaches and executive coaches can teach others how to improve their health. But people who simply want to improve their own well-being, even if they have no prior experience with meditation, can also participate.

“The point of this workshop is to teach a system of meditation which is very approachable to the beginning student or client,” he said. “People who have years of experience are welcome because they may need some support developing an easy system for their clients.”

Spira spent four years living in a Buddhist monastery, so his meditative practices stem from the Zen Buddhist tradition. However, those who do not practice Buddhism still can benefit both physically and spiritually from Eastern meditation, he said.

“Buddhist practices, such as Zen meditation, teach how to stop creating ideas of self and others as separate and to enter into direct relation with whatever one’s doing at that moment by reducing one’s own selfish desires,” said Spira.

The workshop will also benefit clergy, he said. “One is better able to manifest Christian values of non-judgment, of treating others as self.”

Chính quyền Burma tái tạo Pagan làm hư hỏng giá trị khảo cổ quý giá

By Andrew Harding, BBC News, June 4, 2005

Burma rebuilding risks Pagan jewel

By Andrew Harding, BBC News, June 4, 2005

Pagan, Myanmar (Burma) -- The sunsets are still spectacular - a golden glow brushing the curves of 2,000 ancient temples and pagodas clustered on the edge of the Irrawaddy River in central Burma. But today some of the world's leading experts have accused Burma's military regime of waging "archaeological blitzkrieg" against the legendary Buddhist treasures of Pagan.

"They're ruining it," said Richard Engelhardt, regional advisor for the UN's cultural arm, Unesco. "It makes me feel hopeless and helpless and angry and disappointed," he said. I went to survey the damage, posing as a tourist. Burma is one of the world's most repressive dictatorships and foreign journalists are not welcome.

"We are the richest archaeological site in Asia," said my guide proudly as we drove around the site in a horse-drawn carriage.

But almost everywhere I saw signs of the "false" and "misguided" restoration work which Unesco and other experts have so bitterly condemned.

These included:

Hundreds of brand new pagodas built with brick and concrete on top of ancient ruins
A half-built "palace" being constructed from poured concrete at the heart of the site
The widespread use of bathroom tiles, concrete and other unauthentic materials
A 200ft (65m) observation tower and hotel complex under construction on the site
"I'm horrified by the tower," said Mr Engelhardt, who is concerned that the isolated regime's hunger for tourist dollars is responsible for the changes.

"The archaeology destroyed during excavation for its foundations can never be recovered. The [Burmese] government is gussying up the site... commodifying it for mass tourism.

"But it's a loss for everyone. It's becoming less and less a real document of the glory of Pagan's past and more an un-understandable book of nonsense," he said.

Local impact

So what do the locals make of the building work?

Well, remember Burma is a military dictatorship. "I cannot tell you," said one souvenir seller with a nervous glance around us, "there are spies everywhere."

"We all hate the tower," said another man. "But if we say the government is not very good, we get in trouble."

Although some locals have found work in the new hotels opening up - built with an eye on luring mass tourism from neighbouring China - many feel they are being pushed out by a regime anxious to monopolise all tourist revenues.

"All the businesses in town are owned by the military," said one man. "They want to stay on their throne forever." For decades Unesco has sought to arrange World Heritage status for Pagan. But disagreements with the Burmese regime have blocked progress and prevented the UN funding programmes to help train local archaeologists to maintain the site.

"The generals have no room for other voices, for constructive criticism," Mr Engelhardt said."There really aren't the people in [Burma] with the skills to do the job right, to rescue the site. And to me that is the most frightening thing."
