Buddhist Meditation May Produce Lasting Changes in the Brain

By Jennifer Warner, WebMD Medical News, Nov. 10, 2004

New York, USA -- Meditation may not only produce a calming effect, but new research suggests that the practice of Buddhist meditation may produce lasting changes in the brain.
Researchers found that monks who spent many years in Buddhist meditation training show significantly greater brain activity in areas associated with learning and happiness than those who have never practiced meditation.
The results suggest that long-term mental training, such as Buddhist meditation, may prompt both short and long-term changes in brain activity and function.
Buddhist Meditation May Change the Brain
In the study, which appears in this week's online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, researchers compared the brain activity of eight long-time Buddhist monks and 10 healthy students.
The average age of the monks was 49, and each had undergone mental training in meditation for 10,000 to 50,000 hours over the course of 15 to 40 years.
The students' average age was 21. They had no prior experience in meditation and received one week of meditative training before the start of the study.
Both groups were asked to practice compassionate meditation, which does not require concentration on specific things. Instead, the participants are instructed to generate a feeling of love and compassion without drawing attention to a particular object.
Researchers measured brain activity before, during, and after meditation using electroencephalograms. They found striking differences between the two groups in a type of brain activity called gamma wave activity, which is involved in mental processes including attention, working memory, learning, and conscious perception.
The Buddhist monks had a higher level of this sort of gamma wave activity before they began meditation, and this difference increased dramatically during meditation.
In fact, researchers say the extremely high levels of gamma wave activity are the highest ever reported.
The monks also had more activity in areas associated with positive emotions, such as happiness.Researchers say the fact that the monks had higher levels of this type of brain activity before meditation began suggests that long-term practice of Buddhist or other forms of meditation may alter the brain.
Although age differences may also account for some of the differences found by this study, researchers say that the hours of meditation practice, rather than age, significantly predicted gamma wave activity.Researchers say more studies are needed to look at whether differences in brain activity are caused by long-term meditation training itself or by individual differences before training.

Kim Thân Phật Vĩ Đại được dựng lên ở miền Bắc Ấn Độ

Maseeh Rahman in New Delhi, the Guardian

Giant Buddha to rise in northern India

Maseeh Rahman in New DelhiThursday July 15, 2004The Guardian

The world's biggest statue of the Buddha is to be built in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, dwarfing other colossal representations of the religious leader in Japan and China.
The 150-metre-high Buddha Maitreya, or Buddha of the Future, will be installed on a 267-hectare (660-acre) site at Kushinagar, a town on the border with Nepal, where the Buddha died, or attained nirvana, 2,500 years ago.
Cast from bronze, the soaring Buddha will sit on a throne which itself will be a 17-storey building housing a smaller, 12-metre (40ft) statue and a vast prayer hall, shrine rooms and terraced gardens.
The £120m project is the brainchild of the Maitreya Project Trust based in Gorakhpur city and is supported by the state government and a Japanese religious group.
"Kushinagar already attracts many Buddhist pilgrims, but once the project is completed it will become a major international Buddhist centre," said CN Dubey, culture secretary in the Uttar Pradesh government.
Kushinagar's Buddha would have been the largest statue in the world were it not that an even bigger statue, the 169-metre-tall Spirit of Houston, is planned for the American space city. If the Buddha symbolises universal peace, the shimmering chrome Houston statue of a woman in a flowing cape will project the idea of intergalactic friendship.
Colossal representations of the Buddha are a common sight in Asia. The world's tallest stone statue, for instance, is the 67-metre Leshan Buddha in China's Sichuan province. The Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban, were 53 metres and 34 metres tall.

Govt urged to use Buddhism to solve violence in deep South

BANGKOK, Feb 21 (TNA) -- The Thai government has been urged to use Buddhist philosophy to solve the insurgency in the country’s southern border provinces.
Forgiveness should be at the core of the government’s policies for solving the violent unrest in the three southern-most provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, prominent Buddhists and monks urged when gathering at Sanam Luang here yesterday for Buddhist events to mark Makha Pucha Day, which falls on 23 February.
Successive Thai governments have never succeeded in solving the insurgency problems in the deep South with “an eye-for-an-eye policy,” the Chairman of Parliament’s Buddhist Dharma Club, Amnuay Suwannakhiri, said.
The zoning policy announced by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was not a solution, he said.
The Buddhist belief of forgiveness should be the basis of any government policy or operation in the deep South, he stressed.
The government should humanely treat anyone who commits a crime, he said.
Meanwhile, the vice rector of the national Sangha university, Phra Thep Visuthi Kavee, urged the government to promote Buddhist approaches in trying to solve the Thai society’s social problems.
He urged the government to increase religious education for Thais, which would help them deal with their personal problems.
Thousands of Thais paid respect to Buddha’s relics on display at Salam Luang to mark the Makha Pucha Day, one of the Buddhist holy days. (TNA)--E112

Thailand: Make Makha Pucha as a day of Buddhist love

TNA, Feb 21, 2005
BANGKOK, Thailand -- The government has been urged to promote Buddhism to help create a peaceful and loving society. The Makha Pucha day should be promoted as a day of love in a Buddhist fashion to attract young Thais, the vice rector of the national Sangha university, Phra Thep Visuthi Kavee, told TNA.

"Prme Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has promised that the government will pay more attention to religious and social issues over the next four years. I hope he won't forget his promise," he said.Thais interest in religious study had fallen, he said. The number of Thais visiting temples regularly or other sacred Buddhist places has also declined. It is the government’s responsibility to try to increase the Thai public awareness of Buddhist values and activities, he said.Government officials should be given incentives to study Buddhist thought more rigorously. For example they should be given time off -- 5 or 7 days -- to study the Buddhist scriptures or meditate at Buddhist temples, he suggested. He urged Thais to attend the temple and listen to the monks preach on Buddhist Holy days.
