Clariant dyes helping to conserve ancient manuscripts

MUTTENZ, Switzerland, Feb. 27, 2006 (Press Release) - Conservation experts are using Clariant paper dyes to help protect hand-written Buddhist manuscripts more than a thousand years old.

The manuscripts, now housed at the British Library in London, were brought to the UK by Hungarian-born explorer and archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein, after being discovered in a 'Library Cave' in the early 20th century in northwest China.

For centuries, Buddhist monks and devotees hewed scores of cave temples out of the cliffs situated just outside Dunhuang - an oasis town at the fork of the northern and southern trade routes of the Silk Road. In 1907, Stein came to a previously walled-up cave, which yielded an extraordinary hoard of ancient manuscripts, documents and paintings – all preserved in the desert climate.

Thousands of these manuscripts are now kept at the British Library as part of a collection dispersed to museum and library collections worldwide; and conservators are spending countless hours to conserve the original documents - using Clariant paper dyes as part of the process.

Chief conservator at the British Library, Mark Barnard, explains: "The manuscripts are in a relatively fragile state and one of our key tasks is to strengthen them and prevent deterioration. One way of doing this is to 'bond' any frayed edges with fresh paper so that they have clean and complete edges. This technique essentially stops the paper from tearing and enables the manuscripts to be safely stored as scrolls, which conserves their original color and calligraphic style (or brushmanship).

"Before bonding the manuscript edges with new paper, we want to ensure that the color matches so as not to ruin the aesthetics of the artefact. This is where Clariant dyes come in."

Clariant Cartasol dyes are used to dye Japanese tissue paper before it is pasted on to the original manuscript. This type of paper is normally used because it is composed of long fibers, which make it easier to fuse with the frayed edges of the manuscript.

Before this takes place, the paper is dyed using a 'float dye' technique, whereby the paper is floated on water mixed with the Clariant Cartasol dyes. Once dry, it is then water-cut (torn), and the frayed edges of the new paper are carefully joined to the frayed edges of the manuscript.

The dye is mixed using Cartasol Red K 2BN, Cartasol Yellow K GL, Cartasol Blue K RL and Cartasol Orange K 3GL.

Senior conservator Kumiko Matsuoka said: "What's wonderful about using Clariant dyes for this process is that the tissue paper absorbs the color so well that when it is dry and you tear it, the 'raw' edges are the same color as the rest of the paper. If you do this with any other color dyes, the frayed edges are often lighter than the rest of the paper and this would make the join between the new and old papers visible."

The British Library first started using Clariant dyes, which are provided free of charge by Clariant, over 20 years ago. It has been unable to find dyes anywhere else that work as well.
