No. 0518 (Hạt Cát dịch)

Tzu Chi mobile clinic arrives in Houston will provide dental and medical assistance to Katrina evacuees

Reliefweb, Sept 6, 2005

SAN DIMAS, Calif. (USA) -- After 40 hours of driving, the Tzu Chi Mobile Clinic finally arrived in Houston to help the evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. The mobile clinic left from the Buddhist Tzu Chi Free Clinic in the Los Angeles area, early Tuesday morning.

Two Tzu Chi volunteers who drove the vehicle took turns and stopped only to catch a few hours of sleep so that they can get to Houston as soon as possible. Tzu Chi volunteers said it was a challenge to drive the 12-foot tall mobile clinic on the interstate for 1,500 miles from Los Angeles to Houston because every time a large truck passed by, you could feel the vehicle sway side to side.

One week after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, evacuees continue to arrive in Houston, filling up the Astrodome and other evacuation centers. Medical and dental needs are great in this area, so the Tzu Chi Mobile Clinic arrived to give assistance. The mobile clinic is equipped with two dental stations, x-ray and sanitation capabilities. To help operate the mobile clinic, one dentist and two dental assistants, Tzu Chi volunteers who are part of the Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA), left Los Angeles late Tuesday evening and arrived in Houston early this morning. Along with Houston's Tzu Chi volunteer doctors and dentists, the team is ready to provide dental and medical assistance to evacuees.

Tzu Chi's disaster assistance began on Sept. 3 as volunteers set up tables at the Beaumont Ford Park, a shelter in Beaumont, Texas. Beaumont is an hour and a half by car from Tzu Chi's Southern regional office in Houston. Tzu Chi has given gift cards to about 2,000 of the 6,000 evacuees staying in Beaumont, so far, 2,000 people have received Tzu Chi's gift cards. Volunteers also gave 30-minute pre-paid phone cards. Tzu Chi's emergency gift cards will allow families to buy daily necessities, food, water, clothing and prescription medicine.

Although there are some basic items such as food, water and baby formula, Tzu Chi's gift cards give people a chance to purchase what they really need. A man who received the gift card this weekend, came back to Tzu Chi volunteers to say "thank you" because he was finally able to buy detergent to wash his clothes, a razor for shaving his week-long beard and nail clippers.

Tzu Chi will continue distributing gift cards in Beaumont as long as there is a need. Elsewhere in the United States and in 22 countries around the world including Canada, Paraguay, Malaysia, Australia, and Singapore, Tzu Chi volunteers have begun raising funds to assist those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

To help those impacted by Hurricane Katrina, please write checks to Tzu Chi and mail to Tzu Chi Foundation, 1100 S. Valley Center Avenue, San Dimas, CA 91773. For more information, please call (909) 447-7799.

AFP

Buddhist monks take a capitalist leap of faith
07 Sep 2005 16:54

Shanghai, China- In Buddhist teachings, making money is an unlikely path to nirvana, but in increasingly iconoclastic China it just may well be a leap of faith.

Taking a page from their Communist Party brethren, 18 monks in Shanghai have signed up for master of business administration (MBA) classes in hopes of better managing their temple, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

"Through this programme, we want to learn how the secular world is managed," Xinhua quoted Chang Chun, a Zen Buddhist monk and general manager of the city's century-old Jade Buddha Temple, as saying.

Shanghai's Jiaotong University has just launched a special half-year MBA course for monks running Buddhist temples.

The course offers basic economics and accounting as well as temple management and philosophy and religious product marketing.

Required reading also includes divining business negotiating tactics from China's most renowned military expert, Lao Tsu's work The Art of War, mandatory on almost any MBA course around the globe today.

As China has moved away from communist ideals and towards market-system reforms, commercialisation of sacred or religious sites has become common.

One egregious example is the 1 500-year-old Shaolin Temple in central Henan province, which is inundated by tourists.

The monastery's monks and practitioners have few places left for quiet contemplation or the rigorous practice of kung fu. -- AFP

Hội Từ Tế Phật Giáo và những nỗ lực cứu trợ nạn nhân bão lụt.
ReliefWeb, Sept 5, 2005

Tzu Chi provides assistance to hurricane evacuees

ReliefWeb, Sept 5, 2005

Texas, USA -- The Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation has begun providing emergency assistance to Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Texas, as Tzu Chi members across the world started to raise funds for the relief efforts.

Tzu Chi has committed US$4 million for emergency help to the victims who have been evacuated from New Orleans to Beaumont, Houston and Dallas.

On Sept. 4, the first day of Tzu Chi's providing direct aid to the victims, 710 evacuees visited the Tzu Chi relief office set up inside the refugee reception center in Beaumont, which is about five hours by car from New Orleans.

Tzu Chi members greeted the evacuees warmly, as if they were family, not refugees. Each evacuee was given a US$100 Wal-Mart shopping card, a 30-minute telephone card and a letter from Dharma Master Cheng Yen, founder of Tzu Chi.

In the letter, Master Cheng Yen expressed heartfelt sympathy for their suffering. She said, "We hope the aid that we give can also be a source of comfort and support to you -- knowing that it contains the love and good wishes of people around the world."

Telling the victims that "living on this planet, we are all connected to one another," the Master assured the victims that Tzu Chi will remain by their side to help them overcome this disaster and rebuild their lives.

Soon after the devastating hurricane struck New Orleans and other Gulf Coast cities, Master Cheng Yen urged Tzu Chi members across the world to launch a fundraising drive. "Those who are safe should reach out to those who are suffering," she said.

Tzu Chi has set up a relief coordination office in Houston and has mobilized hundreds of volunteers for the relief effort.

Tzu Chi is sending its volunteer doctors affiliated with the Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) to provide free medical services to the evacuees. Three roving medical vehicles of the Los Angeles-based Tzu Chi Free Clinic are ready to leave for Texas. Under consideration is the plan to provide hot meals for evacuees in Dallas.

During the weekend, Tzu Chi members in more than a dozen countries started to raise funds, including the United States, Canada, Argentina, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, France, Austria, Paraguay, and Taiwan.

In Canada, Tzu Chi members in Vancouver raised funds at the city's annual Taiwanese Culture Festival. At the event, Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell officially proclaimed Sept. 4 as "Tzu Chi Day" of the city.

Besides donating money, the mayor even wore Tzu Chi's volunteer vest and carried a donation box to solicit donations. The Tzu Chi members in Canada have so far committed US$1 million for relief efforts.
