Adventures in Living at Sugarbush

March 16, 2005 - 4:14 PMBy AlpineZone News

WARREN, Vermont — The color of hope is white, according to Ann Taylor. When the 53-year-old physical therapist and ski instructor was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 1994 she discovered one way to fight the disease was to continue skiing the mountains surrounding her Salt Lake City home.

"I just continued skiing," said Taylor who now lives in Burlington and is a ski instructor at Sugarbush. (Skiing) is such a joyful experience; I call it fun therapy." Taylor's experience fighting the disease using skiing as a way to overcome the depression that comes with the diagnosis is the crux of her "Adventures in Living" weekend being held this Saturday and Sunday at Sugarbush Resort. The two-day event is open to all who have been touched by cancer and is a weekend devoted to fun, adventure, sharing, love and support. It includes skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and meditation sessions lead by a Shambhala Tibetan Buddhist. There will also be coaching sessions from world-renowned adventure skier John Egan. "It's that empowerment process; that's what the weekend is about," says Taylor about Adventures in Living. "We use the mountain as a metaphor for overcoming fear, finding our joys and passions, and discovering the healing power of the outdoors." The Adventures in Living weekend kicks-off this Friday night with a welcome reception at the Sugarbush Inn and runs through Sunday evening. The cost for the entire weekend, including lodging, lifts and coaching, is $399. Call 800_53_SUGAR to reserve a space.

Local Buddhist group takes different path

By Rick Cousins Correspondent Published March 5, 2005

Traditional Buddhism as practiced throughout Asia teaches that suffering exists, that this suffering arises from desiring things and that suffering ceases when the desire ceases.Freedom from suffering becomes the proximate goal. Practicing the Eightfold Path, which directs right thinking and action, is the first step along that path.Good works and meditation can build individual karma throughout successive reincarnations toward the eventual goal of self-extinction, or nirvana. Unlike most Western religions, in Buddhism there is no God, no heaven and no hell. Buddha is not viewed as a god, but a man who had ‘awakened,’ that is, one who obtained a state of mental potential through meditation. And although there are supernatural beings who are symbolized by idols, they do not judge humans, but are sometimes portrayed as functioning more like ancient Roman gods as reflections of various human traits and appetites whereas other Buddhists take them as pointers or ideals. It’s a lot to wrap your mind around. But the small group of women gathered in Bonnie Carter’s house just off state Highway 96 in League City on Tuesday night is from a different branch of this massive religion.“Our goal is the same, but our path is different,” Carter explained. “The people who come here are more fun-loving, outgoing, exuberant and compassionate.” She sums up uniqueness of the Diamond Way versus Zen and other schools of Buddhism by telling a story. In her tale, a tiger stands in for the entire range of human emotions.“If a dangerous tiger threatens a village, some would kill the tiger and some would cage it,” she said, meaning that eliminating emotion or stoically restricting it are the paths chosen by most Buddhists. But in the Diamond Way, “We ride the tiger.” Ideally, this means using their emotional responses to facilitate the path to enlightenment. The night’s meeting begins simply with beading. The two formerly Catholic women who were there were learning to make Buddhist prayer bead necklaces according to an ancient pattern.“I had looked into many religions, but I was always turned off when I asked about reincarnation,” explained Margie Perkins. “This is the closest to what I grew up knowing.” She has remembered a past life since she was a 3-year-old child in Columbia.“I’d been looking for a different way of doing things spiritually. I was brought up in a Catholic church and school, but I felt that there could not be a God who would punish you for things that you do,” said Patricia Holdaway. After searching the Internet, she found the meetings at Carter’s house. She is on a six-month trial experience with the movement. The Diamond Way path also does not hold to an end in the self-extinction of universal union called nirvana. “There is no judging or punishing God,” Carter said. “We believe that there is no external cause: We create our own future.”Traditional Buddhist responses to suffering and disaster differ from those of Western religions. Carter observed: “The Buddhists in Asia see the Christian missionaries coming over with books and medicine and they are very impressed with that. It is said that for every person in the West who coverts to Buddhism, there are probably five people in Asia who covert to Christianity.”

New Keral, India - March 13, 2005

Sikkim's Buddhist community holds prayer for world peace

ANI, March 13, 2005

Gangtok, Sikkim (India) -- Sikkim's predominant Buddhist community held an auspicious ceremony prayer for world peace in a newly build monastery in Gangtok over the weekend.
The prayer was led by Tulku sang- ngag Rinpoche who is recognized as the Dzogchen master and a master of Buddhist ritual art as well. This includes stupa construction, divination, geomancy and Tibetan medicine.
" This prayer is being held for long life of humanity. This is not isolated to our society but it is for all the human beings. For the well being of today's era of violence and unpleasant environment, we are holding this prayer," said Karma Namgyal (Vice President) of Sikkim Buddhist Association.
Buddhism in Sikkim has strong links to the Buddhism practiced by Tibetans, which is divided into the "Red" and "Yellow" sects. The Red sect comprises of the Nyingma, Kargyu and Sakya lineages and the Yellow sect consists of the Gelugapa lineage.
The sects and lineages are differentiated from each other by the rituals and prayers performed, the monastic discipline promoted and who is the founder of a particular sect or lineage. However, the differences tend to blur with rituals of one lineage do overlap with the other.
Monastries and many buildings in Sikkim are richly decorated with symbols and icons. These symbols are painted or embossed on the walls or on Tankas. These paintings may depict the life of Buddha or some Tibetan saint, the Wheel of of Life or a diety surrounded by lesser deities.
The original inhabitants of Sikkim are said to be Lepchas. They existed much before the Bhutias and Nepalese migrated to the state. Before adopting Buddhism or Christianity as their religion, the earliest Lepcha settlers were believers in the bone faith or mune faith. This faith was basically based on spirits, good and bad.

Chuẩn bị tái thiết chùa chiền ở Phangnga

Bangkok Post Wednesday 16 March 2005

Plan prepared to restore Phangnga temples

Bangkok Post Wednesday 16 March 2005
ACHADTAYA CHUENNIRAN

Phangnga _ At least two months will be needed to clean up and renovate the Wat Bang Muang and Wat Yanyao temples in Takua Pa district of Phangnga which had served as morgues and body identification centres for tsunami victims since the end of December.

Pol Gen Nopadol Somboonsub, deputy director of the Thai Tsunami Victims Identification centre, said yesterday that the remainder of the corpses would be transferred to the Bang Maruan morgue in the same district before the two temples receive a facelift and the locals can again use the temples for religious functions.

The soil surface at both temples would be removed to the depth of 30cm because the temple grounds were soaked with lymph fluid from corpses for months. The surface will then be refilled with earth from elsewhere. The clean-up at both the temples would include the replacement of floor tiles where the corpses were kept.

The job of identifying the remaining corpses at the morgue should take at least a year due to technical and other problems, including DNA contamination. Some European countries have offered to deploy staff and equipment in Thailand to assist with the identification.Phra Tunya Suthajitto of Wat Yanyao said 10 resident monks had returned to the temple and that the pavilions where corpses were kept would be completely renovated in the hope that the new look would draw back merit makers who were afraid of ghosts.

Phra Sunan Yantasilo of Wat Bang Muang said the temple had lost its one and only artesian well because lymph fluid had seaped into it and contaminated the water. Merit-making ceremonies will be held at both temples early next month before the renovation work begins. Phangnga governor Anuwat Metheevibulwuth will seek two or three million baht from the Interior Ministry for the restoration work.

VAI TRÒ QUAN TRỌNG CỦA ĐỨC ĐẠT LAI LẠT MA

Theo tờ The Indian Express, ngày 13 tháng 3 từ New Delhi,

Importance of being Dalai Lama

Never publicly acknowledged, but Beijing and Delhi know ties can’t go ahead without his political blessings

NEW DELHI, MARCH 13: If there is one man who can spoil the big party New Delhi and Beijing are planning next month—Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will be here mid-April—he is the Dalai Lama, the revered leader of the Tibetan people, long exiled in India.
New Delhi and Beijing are attaching great importance to Wen’s visit in terms of transformation in bilateral relations. Instead of wrecking the party, the Dalai Lama has consciously chosen to make it easier for India and China to celebrate next month.

On Thursday in Dharamsala, during a speech marking the 45th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama offered a big political gesture to Beijing. He went further than before in affirming that he is not seeking independence from China.
He also declared he seeks no political role for himself or for the institution of the Dalai Lama in Tibet after a mutually satisfactory agreement on the future of the region is worked out with Beijing. It is not clear whether his gesture will have an immediate impact on the current dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama. But it has created the right political ambience for Wen’s visit.
The turbulent history of Sino-Indian relations since the late 1940s is also the life story of the Dalai Lama. He was present at the creation of the key problems in Sino-Indian relations. He is the only one alive among the cast of characters like Jawaharlal Nehru and Zhou Enlai who struggled in vain to construct a peaceful settlement on Tibet.
While neither side might publicly acknowledge it, both New Delhi and Beijing know they cannot make progress in bilateral relations without the Dalai Lama’s political blessings. For the moment, India and China should be relieved that he has signalled greater political flexibility in his engagement with China.
A harder line would have soured the current attempt to transform Sino-Indian relations by defining a new set of principles to resolve the long-standing boundary dispute.
And this dispute is, in fact, about the boundary between Tibet and the adjacent regions in India. Holding a double-edged sword, the Dalai Lama is the undeclared third party at the Sino-Indian boundary talks. Yet, he has acted with great responsibility. If the Dalai Lama merely whispers that the territorial concessions being discussed are against the interests of Tibet, Beijing and New Delhi will both find it hard to sell a deal on the boundary at home.
This is particularly true of Tawang in Arunachal where China wants major territorial adjustments. It is not merely Beijing that has claims on Tawang, Lhasa has always held Tawang belongs to Tibet. Any principle mutually acceptable to New Delhi and Beijing leading to a settlement on Tawang will need to be endorsed by the Dalai Lama in some form. India and China will need all the wisdom of the Dalai Lama in crafting creative solutions to the Tawang question.
The Tibetans would certainly want to see the resolution of their own political dispute with China in tandem with the settlement of the Sino-Indian boundary dispute. India, then, has every reason to encourage the current dialogue between Tibet and Beijing, and China an opportunity to build on the Dalai Lama’s latest political concessions.

Buddhists 'really are happier'

Scientists say they have evidence to show that Buddhists really are happier and calmer than other people.
Tests carried out in the United States reveal that areas of their brain associated with good mood and positive feelings are more active.
The findings come as another study suggests that Buddhist meditation can help to calm people.
Researchers at University of California San Francisco Medical Centre have found the practise can tame the amygdala, an area of the brain which is the hub of fear memory.

They found that experienced Buddhists, who meditate regularly, were less likely to be shocked, flustered, surprised or as angry compared to other people.
Paul Ekman, who carried out the study, said: "The most reasonable hypothesis is that there is something about conscientious Buddhist practice that results in the kind of happiness we all seek."
Brain activity
In a separate study, scientists at the University of Wisconsin at Madison used new scanning techniques to examine brain activity in a group of Buddhists.
Their tests revealed activity in the left prefrontal lobes of experienced Buddhist practitioners.
This area is linked to positive emotions, self-control and temperament.
Their tests showed this area of the Buddhists' brains are constantly lit up and not just when they are meditating.
This, the scientists said, suggests they are more likely to experience positive emotions and be in good mood.
"We can now hypothesise with some confidence that those apparently happy, calm Buddhist souls one regularly comes across in places such as Dharamsala, India, really are happy," said Professor Owen Flanagan, of Duke University in North Carolina.
Dharamsala is the home base of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.
The studies are published in New Scientist magazine.
