No. 0436 (Hạt Cát dịch)

Buddhist Temple In Rural Lonoke County

Lonoke County is perhaps best known for its agriculture. But farming isn't what lead one group of Arkansans there. At Furlow, they've found the perfect sanctuary to practice Buddhism.

The group used to meet in Jacksonville. When that wasn't working out, they got help from a couple in Furlow who opened their hearts and their home.

Fred Marquardt and his wife, Lek, lived in Furlow for years. But now they say the property in the middle of rural Lonoke County is a holy place. It’s where local Buddhists can come and bring gifts to the one they believe is the enlightened one.

Marquardt says, "They bring the Buddha food, every day the Buddha gets something to eat."

The food is eventually given to the temple's five monks. These disciples of Buddha say they are called to lead others to the path of enlightenment. But it's a job that doesn't pay money.

Lek explains, "They cannot go to the bank and get a loan because they don't have money." That's why the Marquardts agreed to let the monks stay and turn their garage into a temple.

Lek says, "You know, you love each other, take care of each other, share with each other—that's the way I think you know."

And Lek, who came to the U.S. from Thailand 35 years ago, says it's also a way for her and her friends to keep their culture alive. Pongsai Hill is among those who meet here every Sunday for temple day. She says it's all a dream come true.

"They have one in Ft. Smith, but now we have our own here in Lonoke. But thank you Fred and Lek, without that, we would still have nothing.”

The Marquardts are staying with friends and plan to move to Thailand in a couple of months. They've made arrangements for their home to be purchased using the temple's donations.
