Chinese Buddhists to follow trail of Monk Xuan Zang

www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-16 23:15:52

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Four Chinese Buddhists will follow the trail of Monk Xuan Zang of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and present the Indian Nalanda Buddhist temple with a Chinese Buddhist master piece.

Shi Xuecheng, vice-chairman of the Buddhism Association of China, told reporters here Monday that the four Buddhists will be selected from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. They will undergo six months of bitter walking across west China, Pakistan and Nepal, and eventually arrive in Nalanda, where Monk Xuan Zang once lived and studied.

"Buddhism originated in India and was highlighted in China," Shi said. Monk Xuan Zang went to India some 1,300 years ago and now, in return, the Chinese will present India with Chinese Buddhism thinking. The move is of great significance in cultural and religious communication between China and India.

According to Shi, the Chinese Buddhist book will be sewed onto a piece of 32-meter-long silk cloth, in the form of Chinese calligraphy. Along with the book, the Chinese Buddhists will also bring with them a sculpture of Sakyamuni, and a book written by Xuan Zang's follower Monk Bian Ji.

Monk Xuan Zang devoted his entire life to learning Indian approaches to Buddhism and spreading Chinese culture, Shi said. "To follow his trail is to explore the cultural heritage of both China and India, and the great thoughts of our ancestors who cherished peace and love."
In the late autumn of 628, Monk Xuan Zang started his brave journey to South Asia. He walked 25,000 kilometers and spent 19 years of his life learning Indian Buddhism. Nowadays, he is seen as a front-rank scholar by Indian Buddhists and his story is even written into Indian primary school textbooks, Shi said. Thanks to his efforts, China and India have a long history of diplomatic ties that can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. Enditem

Two monks to retrace Buddhist odyssey

www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-17 08:35:53

BEIJING, Jan.17 -- Xuanzang, a Buddhist pilgrim who endured a 17-year trip from China to India 1350 years ago, now has successors to his odyssey.
Two Buddhist monks from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, with two scholars from Hong Kong and Macao, are scheduled to set out this May from the ancient city of Xi'an, in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
In a six-month trip, they will follow in the footsteps of Xuanzang, crossing Pakistan and Nepal to Nalanda, the once famous centre of Buddhist learning in India where Xuanzang used to reside.
But unlike Xuanzang, his successors are not looking for Sanskrit texts. Instead, they are hoping for better communication and cultural exchange between the two countries, said the Venerable Xuecheng, vice-president of the Chinese Buddhist Association, at a Beijing press conference yesterday.
He described the trip as "very significant," as this year marks the Year of China-India Friendship. The journey will also give the public a better understanding of Buddhism, he said.
As a representative from Taiwan's Fo Guang Shan Religious Affairs Committee, the Venerable Huikuan said that peace and harmony among peoples are the two ultimate goals of the trip.
"Having a Taiwan monk in the trip may also promote cultural exchange between the mainland and Taiwan."
The group will carry valuable gifts for Nalanda, including a Liuzu (Huineng, a famous monk in 632-713) Altar Sutra embroidered on silk, a Sakyamuni Statue and a copy of an ancient Chinese book, "Records of the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty" by Xuanzang's disciple Bianji.
"The embroidered Liuzu Altar Sutra is the most valuable gift as it is the only Sutra originated in China," said Shi Zhongyao, secretary-general of the trip organizing committee. "Others were all translated from Sanskrit," he added.
He also confirmed that four candidates have already been chosen, but no details were available. He said the four candidates will walk part of Xuanzang's path but travel by vehicle for the rest. "We don't have enough time to walk the whole way," he said. "It would take at least two years if we were to do so."
The Taiwan-based Eastern TV and Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV will follow the trip and give live broadcasts. Also with the trip are two traditional Chinese painters who will record the journey in calligraphy and paintings.
The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Chinese Buddhist Association and the Chinese Cultural Promotion Society will jointly stage the trip.
Other activities to celebrate the Year of China-India Friendship include two ancient Indian music concerts at the Jiayu Pass, the western end of the Great Wall in Northwest China's Gansu Province and Kuche in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Photo and painting exhibitions will also be held in Beijing and New Delhi after the journey's completion.Enditem

French researcher translates ancient Buddhist text

An ancient work on Vietnamese Buddhism has been translated into French and published in Paris by Orientalist, Dr Philippe Langlet.

The work includes 56 lyric poems and dialogues by Vietnamese monks from the 10th and 12th centuries. It was extracted from a text on China with attached French and Vietnamese versions.

An orientalist and translator, Dr Langlet held a lecture on the book last week at the Hanoi Centre for French Culture (L’Epace).

“I am a history teacher. I have known about and loved this book for a long time. In my lessons, I frequently take these poems as examples of Vietnam,” he said.

“It is the oldest known book on Vietnamese Buddhism to date, which shows an important time when Buddhism strongly affected Vietnamese society.”

Scholars believe the book will be a way to inspire spiritual living, helping people understand transmigration and pain, ideas that continue to affect contemporary life.

Langlet used as much of the original document as he could but said some words may have been lost or incorrectly translated, saying it is difficult to find terms that translate exactly from Vietnamese to French. It was a long journey, he added, from the original meaning in Chinese and Vietnamese to French and the research required many trips to pagodas.

“I hope Vietnamese readers think about the traditional value and are proud of it,” Langlet said.
