Monks calls for Buddhism to be made national religion

BANGKOK, June 20 (TNA) – Over 100 monks and 500 laypeople marched outside the parliament today, calling on the government to make Buddhism Thailand’s official national religion.

Led by Phra Thepwisutkawi, assistant abbot of Wat Rachathivas and the secretary-general of the Buddhist Protection Centre of Thailand, the protestors submitted a petition to Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrue to urge that the constitution be changed to include their demands.
According to Phra Mahacho Thassaneeyo, one of the core members of the Buddhist Protection Centre, the centre wants to see the words ‘Thailand has Buddhism as its national religion’ included in the constitution.

However, he stressed that the centre had no wish to force adherents of other faiths to convert, and noted that Thailand is an open society when it comes to religious affiliation. (TNA)--E006

What the religions of the world have in common
Mike Hendricks
Friday, June 17, 2005

There are approximately 6.5 billion people living on our planet.
That number is expected to surpass 9 billion in the next 50 years and 10 billion by the turn of the next century. Of the people living now, approximately 5.4 billion express a religious affiliation.

The largest category is Christianity. Some 2.1 billion people say they are Christians, about one third of the world's inhabitants.

The following represents a breakdown of the remaining religious/nonreligious adherents:

Islam: 1.3 billion; nonreligious: 1.1 billion; Hinduism: 900 million; Chinese traditional religion: 394 million; Buddhism: 376 million; primal-indigenous: 300 million; African Traditional and Diasporic: 100 million; Sikhism: 23 million; Juche: 19 million; Spiritism: 15 million; Judaism: 14 million; Baha'I: 7 million; Jainism: 4.2 million; Shinto: 4 million; Cao Dai: 4 million; Zoroastrianism: 2.6 million; Tenrikyo: 2 million; Neo-Paganism: 1 million; Unitarian-Universalism: 800 thousand; Rastafariansim: 600 thousand, and Scientology: 500 thousand. There are many other groups that don't fall into any of these categories with smaller numbers of adherents.

Some religions believe in one god (monotheism) while other religions believe in many gods (polytheism). There are actually more polytheistic religions in the world than monotheistic religions, although monotheistic religions have more adherents.

For example, if there are 20 polytheistic religions in the world with two billion adherents and 15 monotheistic religions in the world with three billion adherents, there would be more polytheistic religions than monotheistic religions but more monotheistic adherents than polytheistic adherents. Some religions don't worship gods at all but rather what are considered to be the sacred principles of thought and conduct (Buddhism and other transcendent idealism religions).

The United States is the most religiously diverse country in the history of the world. In most societies here are only a handful of significant religious organizations. In Canada, for example, 90 percent of the population is Christian; half of them are Catholic and half are Protestant. Three quarters of the Protestants belong to two denominations, the Anglican Church and the United Church of Canada. The United States is also about 90 percent Christian, but the largest denomination, the Catholic Church, has only about 28 percent of total church membership. About 57 percent of Americans are Protestant, but they are fragmented into so many denominations and sects that none of them can claim even a tenth of the total religiously affiliated population. In fact, there are currently more than 1,300 different denominations, sects, and cults existing in the United States today.

Each individual religious entity has its own set of beliefs, practices, and rituals. Some Christian groups for example, believe in a hereafter and believe there are certain things that must be done to get there, but there is widespread disagreement on what those things are. Some groups define baptism as sprinkling while others define it as immersion. Some churches are open for anyone to join, others requires being "saved" before baptism can take place. Some churches believe in "speaking in tongues" while others don't.

Some church services emphasize emotion, spontaneity and extensive congregational participation while others do not. Some groups believe in a literal interpretation of the scriptures contained in the Bible while others see the scriptures as parables or examples of desired conduct and thought.

For example, those who take the Bible literally interpret the verse that admonishes believers to "be fruitful and multiply" to be as legitimate today as it was when it was written. Others believe, because of the world's population explosion, that having too many children today is, in fact, immoral.

The latter group contends that when that particular verse was written, the important thing, as it is for any new group, is to "grow the group" to ensure its survival. Those claiming that verse is no longer relevant suggest that that the survival of the group was assured long ago and that continuing to have as many children as one can goes against the spirit of the Scriptures.

Certain religious groups, primarily Christian, believe that God made man. Nonreligious groups believe that man made God in an attempt to explain the unexplainable.

Despite the tremendous religious diversity that exists all over the world, there is one thing and perhaps only one thing that all groups, both religious and nonreligious have in common.

The all believe they're right.

Tìm lại chính mình nơi cửa thiền

by Jeong-Gook Yoon, The Korea Herald, June 18, 2005

Going to the Temple in Search of Self

by Jeong-Gook Yoon, The Korea Herald, June 18, 2005
Seoul, South Korea -- A “temple stay” is about finding the “real self” through Zen meditation or by walking along a forest path to communicate with nature and heal a mind that has been stressed from daily life.

A “temple stay,” which revitalizes the body and soul, is growing in popularity not only among Buddhists but among non-Buddhists as well. This summer, various programs are to be introduced, allowing the user to choose according to his or her own taste.

A Personalized Temple Stay

One example would be the mercy meditation temple stay that takes place under the theme “Me, you, us together” at the Magok Temple, located in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province. Various programs are provided, such as healing meditation for those who have hurt their body and souls, and programs supporting themes such as new lives for divorcees, a beautiful silver life for senior couples, hope for unemployed youth, and forgiveness among married couples. Monk Maga (46), missionary director of Magok Temple, said, “Healing is more effective when people in similar situations open up to each other and embrace each others’ pains; therefore, we have made such personalized programs.”

Daewon Temple, located in Boseong, South Jeolla Province, operates a temple stay under the theme “Let us prepare for death,” and has programs to learn about death invocations, writing wills and reading soul prayers.

Temple Stay with Local Tourist Sites

Buseok Temple in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, operates a bird-watching temple stay where visitors get to watch birds living in the nearby Cheonsu Bay. After worshipping Buddha and having tea with the monks on the first night, visitors learn about the Buddhist concept of nature as well as the ecology of Cheonsu Bay. Bird watching in Cheonsu Bay takes place the next day.

Daeheung Temple in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, will operate a Namdo cultural experience program every second week of the month in addition to the existing “walking in the morning forest” temple stay. There will be a chance to experience the natural environment of Daeheung Temple every first and third week of the month.

Geumsan Temple in Kimje, North Jeolla Province, will hold a temple stay from July 1 to July 3 under the theme “Eat when hungry, sleep when tired.” The daily routine consists not only of traditional Buddhist practices such as worshiping Buddha, Zen meditation, chanting of the Prajna-para-mita-sutra and 108 bows, but also includes programs such as making tea with wild leaves, hiking at Mount Moak, and visiting Gimje’s Byeokgolje and Arirang Literature Hall.

Temple Stay in Collaboration with the “Five Days a Week Class” System

Every fourth Saturday of the month when there is no school, Dori Temple in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, holds sex education classes and lessons in environmental art and mosaics for rural children who rarely have the benefit of visiting cultural centers.

Daeheung Temple in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, operates a temple stay every fourth week of the month where children take a walk in the forest early in the morning with their parents.

Summer Training Camp with Traditional Ascetic Practice

If a temple stay is a light program where non-Buddhists can participate, the temple summer training camp has a more in-depth agenda made for Buddhists. Daeseung Temple in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, revived the traditions of the temple that caused a Zen sensation during the time of the monk Seongcheol, and Cheongdam and will hold a training camp in the form of “trying to stay awake 20 hours a day.”

Foreign Bhikkus in Sri Lanka to participate in Poson Festival

Monday, June 20, 2005, 11:42 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
June 20, Colombo: Buddhist monks and laymen from several countries arrived this morning at the Bandaranaike International Airport to participate in religious ceremonies connected with the Poson Poya.

Poson Poya day is a very significant day for Buddhists as they believe this was the day Buddhism was brought to Sri Lanka by Ven. Mihindu Maha Rahathanwahanse, son of King Asoka, when the Sinhala King Devanampiyatissa ruled the country in the third century BC. The first Buddhist missionaries arrived at Mihintalaya and they were here along with Ven. Mihindu (Mahinda) Thera for about 48 years.

The group this morning included Buddhist monks from Singapore led by Ven. Dr. K. Gunarathna Thera. The group during their stay here will also provide assistance to tsunami victims to rebuild their lives.

Another group of 220 including monks and laymen from Thailand also arrived today. Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath received them at the airport in Katunayake.
