BUDDHIST MEDICAL DELEGATION HEADS FOR SRI LANKA

2005-12-21 19:00:40

Taipei, Dec. 21 (CNA) With the approach of the first anniversary of the killer tsunami in South Asia, a Buddhist medical delegation headed to Sri Lanka Wednesday to begin two weeks' service in the affected areas.

The 17-member group of the Dharma Drum Mountain Culture and Education Foundation carried medical supplies and equipment, as well as hundreds of small gifts to be distributed to children.

As medical resources in Sri Lanka are insufficient and health knowledge is lacking, the medical team is planning to go to shelter centers for the affected residents to provide basic medical services and spread public health information.

TSUNAMI A YEAR AFTER: Making effective use of funds
Sean Augustin
Dec 18:

IN a Buddhist temple in Hikkaduwa, Galle, a three-hour drive from Colombo, a group of children interact merrily with Malaysian actress Ida Nerina.
Spared by the tsunami that devastated other parts of the country, Aceh, Thailand and parts of Malaysia, the temple became a makeshift stage for drama workshops.

The workshop is part of the Sunera Foundation’s Theatre Outreach Project which uses drama tools as therapy to help victims cope with the disaster in Galle, Ampara, Matara, Jaffna, Hambantota and Trincomalee.

Ida, the project’s spokesperson, recorded a video diary when she was there in early November.

The project is one of six funded by the Force of Nature aid foundation (FON), which most Malaysians recognise as the concert organiser that brought in a multitude of performers, including the Black Eyed Peas, Wyclef Jean and Anastasia.

Thus far, the organisation has spent RM1.5 million of the RM12 million collected from the concert.

But FON chief executive officer Steve McCoy is not rushing to spend the funds.

Apart from the fact that their spending is based on a cycle, the organisation has plans to use the funds effectively.

"Giving money is easy, but using money responsibly is difficult," he said.

"If throwing money at a problem would solve it we would have certainly done so. But in this case, money isn’t the problem."

That is why the projects funded by FON are long-term and revolve around developing human capital, like the remedial teaching programme to improve academic performances of students.

There is also the sponsorship of Acehnese medical students who had to complete their final year in other medical colleges when their Zainal Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh was destroyed.

As with the medical students, FON collaborated with the Muslim Professional Forum (MPF) to finance the living expenses of a 100 final year students.

"Without the college, students had no patients for practice so we sent them around Indonesia to complete their studies," said McCoy.

Other projects include the setting up of an engineering faculty to help in the reconstruction of Aceh and a two-year project with Kyoto University to study solutions in the rebuilding of affected areas.

The response to the projects has been great and the foundation is encouraged by the co-operation shown by the local community.

"It’s a real privilege to witness the unity of the people of Aceh, which puts us in a good position to facilitate the aid," McCoy said.

But relief efforts have their share of problems with bureaucracy and corruption, both frustrating tasks. The biggest problem though may be the generosity itself.

"The tsunami was one of the best-funded disasters and it became a case of too many cooks. There was very little communication and co-ordination and this meant some communities got more than they needed."

Haphazard planning by other campaigns also saw winter clothing sent to Sri Lanka and consumed by cows while a consignment in Banda Aceh has yet to be distributed.

"We can’t carry on like this. We have to learn to work smarter," said McCoy.

Currently, the foundation is ironing out details with MPF to help the next batch of medical students in Aceh.

On Monday, the "Tsunami — One Year On" campaign will be launched to raise public awareness on survivors and their needs.

From Dec 26 till Jan 2, the foundation is organising an exhibition, which Malaysian actress Datuk Michelle Yeoh is scheduled to attend with the Malaysian Chinese Photojournalist Association showcasing about 170 pictures of Aceh and Sri Lanka.

QUỸ “TỪ TÂM” BAN PHÁT TÌNH THƯƠNG
by Anne Beaty, Airdrie Echo Editor, 21/12/ 2005

Metta Foundation offers kindness, compassion
by Anne Beaty, Airdrie Echo Editor, December 21, 2005

Airdrie area charity founder touches the lives of dying children a world away

Airdrie, Alberta (Canada) -- They laugh, they love, they cry. They go to school, eat, sleep and play like any other children. But the young people of Mercy Centre, in Bangkok, Thailand, are orphans in the storm. They are among the 25,000 orphaned children in Thailand who were born HIV/AIDS-infected. And they will all die before their lives have really even begun.

Now, an Airdrie area resident has devoted the remainder of his life and beyond to helping these children. At the beginning of November, Charles Darwent – a retired barrister and solicitor who practised law for 25 years in Calgary – established the Metta Foundation, a registered charitable organization dedicated to raising funds to help ease the short lives of the Bangkok orphans.

For Darwent, who himself is facing imminent death as a result of ALS (arterial lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), his mission is clear.

"‘Metta’ is a Sanskrit word for loving kindness and compassion in the broadest sense," he said.

With that in mind, Darwent’s goal is to raise $50,000 for Mercy Centre through the foundation. Should he die before that goal is reached, his daughters – Rebecca Darwent,a first-year University of Calgary student who plans to be an international social worker, and Tacita Clarke, a political science master’s student at U of C – will carry on with his dreams.

"I’ve already passed my expiry date," Charles said. "So (the Metta Foundation) will go on when I am relieved of the indignities."

Mercy Centre – which provides a loving home, food, clothing, medication and nursing care – was founded by Father Joe Maier, a Roman Catholic priest. A member of the Redemptorist Order, Maier has spent more than 30 years in the Klong Toey slum district of Bangkok, where the centre is located. He runs Mercy Centre as a non-denominational facility, a home in which all the children, the majority of whom are Buddhist, can live, pray and go to school. The aim is not to convert, but to comfort.

"Even though it’s a Catholic group, they still let the children have their Buddhist beliefs," Rebecca said. "Having faith in something is critical."

Charles was first introduced to Bangkok and Thailand in 1957-58. As a member of the British army, he was a U.K representative to SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization) and saw first-hand the hopelessness of Klong Toey. The experience left a deep impression and his emotional and spiritual ties to the country have remained throughout the years. As such, his passion about the plight of the orphaned children has impacted his family, friends and former colleagues. Support has been strong in the first few weeks of Metta’s existence, with much assistance coming from the law community. Now, he is also reaching out to the community at large, with hopes of raising awareness, as well as money.

"We want to set up a booth in the malls," he said.

Rebecca, a member of the Global AIDS Awareness (GAA) group on campus, is also planning a club night and benefit dinner.

On the desk beside Charles’ computer are photographs of some of the special Thai children who have succumbed to AIDS. Although their deaths have been difficult to fathom or accept, their spirits live on in Darwent.

"They remind me that every day I must do something, no matter how small," he said.

"They don’t deserve to die," he added.

Female monk causes a stir
Madison group supports woman in Thailand who challenges male role in Buddhism
By SHEILA B. LALWANI
slalwani@journalsentinel.com
Posted: Dec. 23, 2005

Bangkok, Thailand - As Buddhist monks roam busy streets swathed in saffron robes, as they lecture in universities and counsel politicians, one monk stands out.

Dhammananda Bhikkhuni, a slight woman with a soft voice and a shaved head, is a female ordained monk in Thailand challenging the male patriarchy of her country. Male monks call her a heretic for getting ordained, which is technically outlawed in Thailand. When she helps other women become ordained, they get angrier.

"We have to prove to society that it is possible that women can lead ordained lives," she says in an interview.

The International Committee for the Peace Council, a non-profit group in Madison, is championing her mission. The council, which believes peace is possible through inter-religious collaboration, offers its moral support and has sent $27,500 since 1996 to assist her.

"She's working to restore equality for women in a particular context that is important in Thai society and all of Southeast Asia," council executive director Daniel Gomez-Ibanez says. "So we support what she is doing."

Miles from the heart of Bangkok's bustling city center and glittery golden temples, Dhammananda set up the headquarters to her religious revolution in a simple, wooden temple in Nakhon Pathom. Several women there are training to be monks. Nearly three years after becoming a full monk, Dhammananda and the issues she fights for remain mired in controversy.

Most residents are Buddhist
Out of the roughly 65 million people living in Thailand, about 95% claim Buddhism as their religion. Buddhism, one of the world's largest religions, was founded in present-day Nepal around the 5th century B.C. and later spread across Asia.

In Thailand, the majority of people practice Theravada Buddhism, the oldest and most conservative form of Buddhism.

There are roughly 300,000 bhikkhus, or male monks, and 25,000 temples in Thailand where men can learn about and practice Buddhism. Only a handful of temples focus on women. Women can become nuns, shave their heads and live a religious life, but they receive fewer privileges than male monks.

The issue of women's ordination in the Theravada sect of Buddhism is highly controversial in Thailand and many Asian countries, says Jan Nattier, a professor of Buddhist studies at Indiana University-Bloomington.

It is believed that the Buddha established the bhikkhuni, or female monastic order, 2,500 years ago to give women equal access to spiritual practices. Nattier says the female monks' community disappeared from the Theravada tradition around the 11th or 13th century A.D.

Critics argue that to ordain a female monk, other female and male monks must be present. They say that because ordained female monastics died out in Thailand and the rest of the Theravada world, ordaining a female monk is impossible.

Supporters for women's ordination argue that the Buddhist hierarchy is missing a chance to update its tradition in a time of rapid change for Thailand.

When some Buddhists in Sri Lanka decided several years ago to attempt to restore the order, the first ordinations had to be conducted with the help of Korean and Taiwanese female monastics from different Buddhist traditions, Nattier says.

The issue in Thailand is especially complicated because in 1928, the patriarch of Thailand issued an edict that monks must not ordain women. But, Nattier says, women can still take preliminary monastic vows.

Female ordained monks in Thailand risk social alienation. Some have been imprisoned.

Recalling her calling
At first, Dhammananda says, she wasn't sure she wanted to enter a religious life. She remembers a life that was spent teaching at a local university, writing books and hosting talk shows.

"I was rebellious. It was my life. To be a priest, you have to have that calling from God," she says.

Since 1996, the Peace Council has lent its moral support and contributed money to assist her social missions for women. She has opened a shelter for ex-prostitutes in Thailand. She also serves as a peace advocate with the group.

In 2004, she brought the Wisconsin-based committee to Thailand to address women in religion. At the end of the four-day conference, a statement calling for women's equal rights was proclaimed.

"What she has done, we endorse," says Joseph Elder, a friend and a trustee with the Peace Council.

Raising money
As she continues to advocate for women, Dhammananda says she looks to American Buddhists as role models. They are less focused on gender and more focused on the spirituality, she says.

These days, she's mostly busy with fund-raising for various social causes and advocating for women in Buddhism. Despite intense controversy, she plans to continue helping other women become ordained monks. She says her religion facilitates her being a feminist.

"Whether we are accepted or not, we are here," she says.

Sheila B. Lalwani of the Journal Sentinel staff traveled to Thailand in November to study religion and society through the Asia Foundation as part of a delegation of young Americans.
