Nhóm Phật Tử Việt Nam dự định thành lập tu viện tại trung bộ tiểu bang Pennsylvania, Hoa Kỳ.

Sunday July 16, 2006

YEAGERTOWN, Pa.

Buddhist group set to establish monastery in central Pa.
Sunday July 16, 2006

YEAGERTOWN, Pa. (AP) A Buddhist group founded by Vietnamese immigrants is planning to turn a central Pennsylvania school building into its first monastery on the East Coast.

After a series of zoning hearings this spring, the United Buddhist Church of America is set to buy the 1930s-era school building in Mifflin County this month. The group is a federation of temples, most of them in California and Virginia.

Thich Van Dam, a Buddhist monk, said he found the building while searching the eBay online auction site on his computer in suburban Washington, D.C., and loved it at once.

``This location is very natural. Close to mountains. Just like my temple in Vietnam,'' said Van Dam, admiring the school's views of meadows and forested hills during a visit last week. ``It recalls me back 40 years ago, when I first start my Buddhist manhood.''

The monastery, which Van Dam said cost more than $300,000 and will take an additional $700,000 to renovate, will welcome Buddhists and non-Buddhists who want to study the religion.

As many as 45 people monks, nuns and others will be able to live at the planned 25,000-square-foot monastery. Van Dam expects to start with four students and grow to 15 within five years.

While some area residents have expressed hostility, others have been very open to the diversity the monastery will add to the community.

Lou Ann Yoder, a clerk at nearby Friendship Bookstore, opposed the monastery at first.

``But then I thought about the freedom issue, and I feel strongly about that,'' she said. ``I'm Mennonite. We came here because of religious freedom.''

The temple will not be the first outpost of an Eastern religion in rural Pennsylvania, either. For instance, there is a Buddhist temple in Lancaster County, a Hare Krishna farm in Juniata County and a pink stone Hindu pilgrimage site in Schuylkill County.

Some of the attraction to such areas revolves around cheap land and the privacy that is afforded by remote locations, said Allen Richardson, a religion professor at Cedar Crest College, who studies the phenomenon.

``The only problem I have is these religions come to our country and have more rights than we do,'' said Ray North, of Reedsville, a retired steelworker.

But Tom Rager, an electrician, said he thinks the Buddhists ``have a right to believe the way they believe.''

For his part, Van Dam said the group just plans to be a good neighbor.

``Under the U.S. Constitution, I have the right to exercise my religion,'' he said. ``I don't do any harm.''

Monks allege Buddhist holy tree's branch sold to Japan

Indo-Asian News Service

Patna, July 21, 2006 . Buddhist monks have alleged that the branch of the 110 year old holy tree in Bihar that was cut off by unidentified people earlier this week has been sold to a Japanese buyer for millions. They also demanded a probe by the central government.

Reports on Thursday said a branch of the tree in Mahabodhi temple in Bihar's Bodh Gaya town - where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment 2,550 years ago, was found chopped.

Bhante Anand, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Bhikkhu Mahasangh (ABBM), an influential body of Buddhist monks, said: "We have information that the branch was sold to some Japanese for money in connivance with the temple management committee."

Anand added that he suspected involvement of international mafia.

He said there was a high demand of holy tree leaves, wood and soil of its root in Japan, where Buddhism has a large following.

Early Friday Bihar home secretary visited Bodh Gaya to inquire into the incident after the Prime Minister's Office sought a detailed report from the state government.

The tree behind the 1,500-year-old temple grew from the original banyan tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Buddhist pilgrims carry back leaves from the tree, believed to be the sixth regeneration of the original banyan tree.

The Mahabodhi temple was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002.

Cơn giông bão mãnh liệt gây tổn thương hàng chục Phật tử tại Vermont

The Associated Press, Thứ Tư ngày 19 tháng 07, 2006.

Severe storm injures a dozen in Vt.

The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 19

BURLINGTON (AP) — A severe thunderstorm knocked down trees and power lines in northeastern Vermont at midday Tuesday, injuring about a dozen people at a Buddhist retreat and moving a sheriff's cruiser about 40 feet, officials said.
There were some reports that a tornado touched down in Barnet and meteorologists from the National Weather Service office in Burlington were in the area Tuesday trying to determine if that's what caused the damage or if it was just a severe thunderstorm, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Eric Evenson.
"It was definitely a very intense storm that was very prolific in producing severe damage," Evenson said.
The intense portion of the storm lasted about 20 minutes and most damage was reported near the intersection of U.S. Route 5 and West Barnet Road.
There were trees reported down in Barnet, Ryegate and Peacham.
"It was producing severe weather around the Littleton, New Hampshire, area," Evenson said. "I believe that storm went all the way into Maine."
The storm knocked out power to about 2,000 customers in the Barnet-Ryegate area, said Dotty Schnure, a spokeswoman for Green Mountain Power.
The storm knocked out two transmission lines serving each community. The utility rerouted power into Ryegate by about 3 p.m. and line crews are now working to restore the line serving Barnet.
At 6 p.m. 1,000 customers were still without power in Barnet.
Schnure said the transmission line serving Barnet was repaired by about 8:30. After that crews began working to restore power to individual customers.
She didn't know how long it would take to restore power for all customers.
