Phật Giáo Ấn Ðộ phủ nhận thống kê tôn giáo
10 June, 2005 INDIA

Indian Buddhists reject religious census
10 June, 2005 INDIA

Buddhist leaders complain that the government census treats Buddhists as if they were Hindu, reducing their numbers from 50 to 8 million.

New Delhi (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Buddhist leaders have slammed the government for its recently released Census of Religions, which puts the number of Buddhists in the country at 8 million. They claim instead that the actual number of Buddhists in India “is closer to 50 million”.

Population expert Ashish Bose studied the country’s Buddhist community on behalf of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM). His findings suggest that its numbers have not changed over the past ten years and have “remained constant at 79.55 lakh [one lakh equals 100,000] for over a decade”

For Buddhist leaders, including the Dalai Lama’s representative in India Tenzin Ngodupa, census takers deliberately registered hundreds of thousands of Buddhists as Hindus.

The leaders from Maharashtra were angry over the “deliberate omission” whereby new Buddhists were registered as Hindus.

NCM chairman Tarlochan Singh, chairman said that he would ask the central government to appraise Buddhist leaders’ grievances and reconsider the accuracy of the census data.

Study Of Monks Shows Brain's True Capabilities

June 13, 2005 7:03 a.m. EST

Danielle George - All Headline News Staff Reporter

Brisbane, Australia (AHN) - Australian scientists gave Buddhist monks vision tests in which they were able to chart their ability to train their minds to respond to one stimuli.

The results are giving scientists insight into the potential of the human brain.

In the study the monks were given two pictures to view. While most individuals would bounce between the two objects the monks that had meditation training were able to block the two images and solely focus on one.

Writing in Current Biology, the scientists say their ability to override this basic mental response indicates how the brain can be trained.

Olivia Carter, of the University of Queensland, said, "The monks showed they were able to block out external information. "This is an initial step in understanding how their brains work. "It would now be good to carry out further tests using imaging techniques to see exactly what the differences are in the brains of the monks."

She said that could direct researchers to a broader understanding of how meditation influences what happens in the brain when someone is deciding whether to give something their attention, and what happens when they choose not to dwell on bad news, or to calm down.

Dr. Toby Collins, of the Oxford Centre for the Science of the Mind, told the BBC News website that, "Meditation is a way of tapping into a process of manipulating brain activity."

A 92-year-old Buddhist text written with the blood of a monk was unveiled in an auspicious ceremony where at least 3,000 devotees prostrated for two hours at the Tai Kuk Wah Si Temple in Kuala Lumpur.

The Lotus Sutra, written by temple founder Rev Master Hui Yan using his own blood as ink, was previously preserved and kept out of public viewing since World War II.

It was hidden then due to fears it would be destroyed during the Japanese Occupation.

Rev Master Hui Yan, who spent two decades in the temple, took two years to finish writing the text.

Sin Chew Daily reported that the Lotus Sutra was finally brought out on Sunday and devotees gathered since dawn to prostrate before the text, which contained Buddha teachings on wisdom.

“The temple is a place for anyone seeking dharma. It is not a tourist spot,” said Master Wen Zhi of the 100-year-old temple.

“We will organise activities for devotees so that they can find a place to de-stress themselves from a hectic lifestyle,” he added.
