Trains to run through Buddhist circuit
The Hindu, Sept 15, 2006

New Delhi, India -- Ever fancied visiting Buddhist religious places? Is travelling across India, visiting tourist and cultural destinations, one of your long-cherished dreams? If yes, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation has tailor-made travel programmes.

The latest from the corporation is the Buddhism circuit. The train will run from Thiruvananthapuram to major Buddhist centres and return. The circuit is likely to be launched in October, and negotiations are on with tour operators for finalising the itinerary, says K.P. Damodaran, Kochi regional manager of the corporation.

Though tourists from Sri Lanka are the target, the corporation expects others also to join. The Bharat Darshan programme is one of the major travel initiatives of the corporation. The first programme covered Agra, Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Kulu, Manali and Allahabad in 15 days. The fare of Rs. 8,000 met all expenses, such as hotel fare and sightseeing, food and related costs.

The tourists are put up in hotels at night, and local partners of the corporation take care of travel and other arrangements. Special second-class sleeper trains are run. The fare now depends on the number of passengers for each trip, and once the programme stabilises, it will be cut, Mr. Damodaran says.

At present, a private tour operator is running the programme for the corporation. However, the latter plans to run the Buddhism circuit on its own.

The next Bharat Darshan train will leave on September 22 and end its journey on October 3. The tour is of Agra, Chandigarh, Amritsar and New Delhi, and the fare is Rs. 6,818. Those keen on visiting Shimla will have to pay Rs. 1,000 more.

Short-duration travel programmes are being finalised for the Kerala region, and expressions of interest have been invited from local travel and tour operators, Mr. Damodaran says.

Một Ấn Ðộ nhỏ ở Trung Quốc

September 12, 2006 11: 37 IST

Lạc Dương, Trung Quốc. September 12, 2006.

Now, 'Little India' in China

September 11, 2006 11:37 IST

As part of efforts to boost ties of friendship and culture between India and China, a majestic Indian-style Buddhist stupa on the pattern of the World Heritage Sanchi Mahayana stupas, is taking shape in Luoyang, a historic temple town in Henan province.

Located on the western side of the ancient White Horse Temple, it is a joint venture as part of an agreement inked between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao during the latter's visit in April last year.

The idea was first mooted by the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he visited Bai Mai Si Temple on a trip to Luoyang City in 2003.

Besides funding 10 million yuan for construction, India is providing architectural design, landscape planning and other related material while the Bai Ma Si has allotted 2,667 sq m.

China is offering official cooperation and permits to facilitate the travel of Indian architects and other construction experts.

"Stupa construction began in June this year and will take 310 days for completion," says Honglu Temple Abbot Shi Yin Le. A UNI correspondent visiting the site found construction progressing in top gear. Work on outer corridors and the 27-ft-high stupa is underway simultaneously. Foundation beams have been completed while iron rods have been fixed for columns.

The shrine will be formally declared open on April 26 next year in the presence of senior Indian and Chinese officials, besides monks.

Buddhists in China hold India in high esteem and ordinary Chinese, who cannot afford to make a trip to India, can now have a glimpse of 'little India' there.

The Chinese government is taking encouraging steps for revival of Buddhism, which is considered panacea for all problems related to the country's rapid social and economic development.

Khai trương tuyến đường xe cáp lên đỉnh núi tôn trí Kim Thân Ðại Phật Hong Kong
September 12 2006 at 10:54AM

Cable car to Hong Kong's Big Buddha to open

September 12 2006 at 10:54AM

Hong Kong - A new Hong Kong cable car designed to take tourists to the world's largest outdoor statue of Buddha will open on September 18, nearly three months after technical glitches delayed the launch.

The launch of Ngong Ping 360, originally set for June 24, had been postponed indefinitely while operators investigated the cause of a breakdown that left 500 visitors hanging in mid-air in motionless cabins for two hours.

Bill Calderwood, managing director of Skyrail, said the opening date was now set following the successful completion of the seven-day trial run.

"In addition to the spectacular cable car ride with panoramic views of the North Lantau Country Park and Tung Chung Bay, our guests can be assured that the cableway and its supporting systems will offer a reliable, comfortable and fun tourism experience," he said in a statement.

The cable car, which took over two years to build, will glide 5,7km over hills to a culturally-themed village near Hong Kong's Big Buddha statue.

Dalai Lama urges young people to embrace globalization
Dan Boniface Web Producer

DENVER (AP) - Thousands of teenagers gathered for the PeaceJam world convention rose to their feet and cheered Saturday, greeting the Dalai Lama like a rock star.

The second day of Peace Jam took place on Saturday in Denver. 9NEWS at 7 a.m. September 16, 2006.

In his traditional maroon robe, the Dalai Lama spoke for more than an hour at PeaceJam, which brought together 10 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, urging the teens to keep open hearts and practice peace in their daily lives.

"At this moment, in 2006, the major part of this century is in your hands," he told them.

Facing a future with an ever-growing population, more and more demands for energy and food, and huge disparities in wealth, the Dalai Lama said the next generation will have to embrace globalization and accept people from all countries as neighbors and collaborators, not rivals.

"There are no national boundaries. The whole globe is becoming one body," he said. "In these circumstances, I think war is outdated - destruction of your neighbor is actually destruction of yourself."

Destroying another country in war doesn't benefit the victor any more. Instead, it creates environmental problems, trade gaps and humanitarian suffering that everyone must bear, he said.

Current strife is the result of past mistakes, he said, and he urged the teens not to get discouraged or think they have to stop all wars themselves. Instead, their mission is to learn from the previous generation's mistakes and start now by opening dialogue with each other so there are fewer disagreements, misunderstandings and violent clashes in the future.

"If we look carefully, I think we are social animals," he said. "We need a sense of caring, a sense of concern for others."

Earlier speakers criticized the United States and the Bush administration for invading Iraq and Afghanistan and not supporting supporting conventions recognizing the rights of children, and failure to open markets to developing nations.

About 3,000 youths from 31 countries were registered to attend PeaceJam at the University of Denver campus, billed as the largest gathering of Nobel Peace laureates in North America.

Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff, both 49, started PeaceJam, which aims to bring teenagers face-to-face with some of the world's top proponents of peace.

"We face serious problems and if we don't start dealing with them in earnest and quit thinking it's someone else's problem to deal with, then we're doomed," Suvanjieff said. "I've kind of given up on people my age."
