TV STAR'S BUDDHISM COURSE SOMETHING FOR RESORT TO THINK ABOUT

11:40 - 27 September 2006

Tv presenter, writer and musician Alistair Appleton is planning to help teachers and children in Devon learn to meditate when he visits the county next month. The host of the BBC programme Cash in the Attic and cult show House Doctor is a Buddhist, and now runs meditation courses across the country.

In November, he will be teaching at the 16th century Boswell Farm, Sidford, near Sidmouth.

But Alistair, 36, says he is also on a mission to help the people of nearby Sidmouth de-stress and is offering to run his classes for free for the local community.

He would particularly like to work with religious education teachers or school councillors.

"Learning to meditate is very rewarding and I would love to get the local people involved as well as those who are coming to my course," he said.

"I am trying to arrange to visit schools in the area and I have already met the local vicar."

Buddhists aim to achieve enlightenment about the true nature of reality by following the teachings of Guatama Buddha, who lived in India in the 5th century, and purifying the mind through meditation.

Alistair has been teaching beginners for three years at the Buddhist retreat on Holy Isle, off the Isle of Arran in south-west Scotland.

He became a Buddhist in 2000 while staying in Thailand and now spends a lot of time on Holy Isle.

He has been asked by the Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell to get schools north of the border interested in meditation. But this is the first time he has taught in the Westcountry and he spent weeks trying to find a suitable location.

Alistair's ABC of Meditation course is a five-day event. He studied at monasteries in Sussex and California and since 2004 he has drawn inspiration from outside the Buddhist world, working with the shamanic practices of the Amazonian Indians in Brazil. He taught in universities in Germany and Poland after graduating from Cambridge University. Alistair is also an actor and has had roles in Footballers' Wives and Doctor Who.

He is writing a book about his mother's family, who were all butchers, and is working on an American version of the Tv show Through the Keyhole.

Dalai Lama encourages women's compassion
Big names come out for conference hosted by governor, first lady
By LAURA MECOY
SACRAMENTO BEE

LONG BEACH - The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, made his first appearance at a women's conference Tuesday to urge the crowd to help change the world by creating happy, peaceful and compassionate families.

Maria Shriver, struggling to accept the end of her network news career and embrace her role as the state's first lady, recounted her angst at being labeled a "housewife" by her 13-year-old son, Patrick.

"My son's words that day made me feel like the ride I had been on had come to a screeching halt, and that really bothered me," she said. "And worst, I was bothered that I was bothered by that."

Each offered his or her advice and personal stories at the 20th governor's conference on women, an annual gathering that is no longer so much about the governor as it is about the celebrity speakers, the state's first lady and inspiring the nearly 11,000 women who come each year.

Begun in 1985 by former Gov. George Deukmejian as a networking opportunity for businesswomen, Shriver has turned it into a star-studded showcase featuring her beliefs and causes, from volunteerism to helping California's military families.

This year, the California Governor and First Lady's Conference on Women featured a "Volunteer Village" of more than 40 organizations signing up volunteers.

The focus of the daylong talkfest was the eclectic crowd of speakers, ranging from financial guru Suze Orman to the once-nearly-bankrupt Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson.

"Meet the Press" television host Tim Russert told the mostly female crowd, "I must be in heaven."

Columnist Anna Quindlen declared women had "changed the world over our lifetimes."

The first American woman in space, former astronaut Sally Ride, urged the crowd to "inspire the next generation of girls to reach for the stars and achieve their dreams."

Amid the hoopla, the governor - despite his own celebrity credentials - barely got six minutes on the stage at a morning session where many seats were empty.

Introduced by daughters Katherine and Christina Schwarzenegger, he welcomed the crowd, praised his wife and the other "amazing and strong" women in his life - and then left.

"While I would love to stay here all day, one of the best things I have learned along the way is that when a lot of women on a mission get together, smart men stay out of the way," the governor said. "That is exactly what I am going to do today."

The exiled Tibetan leader said he'd accepted Shriver's invitation to his first women's conference because he believed women were the source of compassion in society.

He urged women to play more prominent roles in government, politics and the military in the belief they could create a more compassionate society.

"It could be, if we had more compassionate female leadership in many parts of the world, I think the problems (could be) solved on the human level," he said.

Buddhist center coming to Israel
ReligionAndSpirituality.com

BEIT SHEMESH, September 28 (UPI) — A group of Buddhists is creating an interdisciplinary center in Israel to "bring the Far East to the Middle East."

The Israel Center for the Study of Buddhism is a non-profit research institution that seeks to bring an understanding of the fundamentals and the history of Buddhism as a whole from the earliest times up to the present so that Israeli society can better understand the Far East, a spokesman said Thursday.

The ICSB will be the only academic institute from Morroco to Afghanistan and from Turkey to Yemen researching Buddhism and its cultural backgrounds (India, SE Asia, China and Tibet) individually as well as a whole, from the distant past up to today.

Secondly, it will try to better acquaint the Far East, (especially China and India) with Judaism and the part it plays in the State of Israel. These two opposite paths, one internal and the other external in their outlook, are what make the Israel Center for the Study of Buddhism extraordinary.
