BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala.

GULF COAST CRISIS: HELPING VIETNAMESE
Buddhist monks say immigrants are ignored

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. -- Dressed in brown and wearing sandals, two Buddhist monks from California and Indiana arrived on the Gulf Coast this week to join local monks in helping the thousands of Vietnamese immigrants, many U.S. citizens, who feel shut out of relief programs.

For these people, many of whom worked in the now devastated fish and shrimp industry, the hurricane disaster has been particularly acute: In the 1970s and '80s, the Vietnamese families now settled along the Gulf Coast had been refugees to the U.S. after surviving war and often a perilous journey at sea to escape their homeland.

Now they are on the move again, said the two monks and a third from nearby Ocean Springs, Miss.

"They are now refugees again," said Thich Hang Dat, 40, a monk at Ten Thousand Buddhas Summit Monastery in Corydon, Ind.

He and the two other monks have so far collected $10,000 to disburse among distressed Vietnamese families along the coast. On Thursday afternoon the three men were looking for evacuees at Chanh Giac Temple in Bayou La Batre, he said.

Facing language and cultural obstacles, many Vietnamese families who are now evacuees are unable to apply for or even understand federal assistance programs, Thich said.

He said federal relief officials have ignored the needs of the Vietnamese families.

"There is a lack of communication. They don't pay attention to us--because of the language problem. Most of us are U.S. citizens. We should get assistance," Thich said. "We have a little voice. . . . We cannot get the assistance from FEMA and the Red Cross--the assistance in the form of money, food, health care."
