No. 0544 (Như Hạnh dịch)

Craftsman fashions new life from burnt temple

September 29, 2005 ㅡ YANGYANG, Gangwon ― Naksan Temple, one of Korea's most historic Buddhist shrines, was destroyed by forest fire in April, but timber from the temple's main building has been given new life as western musical instruments.
Lim Chang-ho, a musical instrument builder in Gangnung, Gangwon province, recently made a cello and a violin from the wooden pillars of Wontong Bojeon, Naksan Temple's main shrine building. The 71-year-old instrument-maker then donated them to the temple.
Mr. Lim has been making string instruments such as cellos, violins and violas for 40 years. The master craftsman said he had visited the temple in June for fear the pillars, built from 50-year-old wood, would be abandoned and wasted.
Naksan Temple, which burned down in the Yangyang forest fires last April, was founded by the Great Buddhist Uisang in 671 A.D. during the Silla Kingdom. Another famed great Buddhist from the era, Wonhyo, is believed to have frequented the temple. One of the oldest temples in Asia, Naksan Temple used to receive 600,000 tourists a year.
During his visit, Mr. Lim told temple administrators he desired to make string instruments out of the precious wood, explaining that with a proper period to dry, the old materials would be perfect for state-of-the-art instruments. Most western string instruments are built from imported wood in Korea, but Mr. Lim said Korean pine trees make excellent products.
Mr. Lim said he cut out burnt surfaces from the 6-meter-long (19.7-feet), 80-centimeter-diameter pillars and produced 3-centimeter-thick wooden panels to build instruments. It took Mr. Lim more than 10 hours a day over nearly three months to build the cello and violin and cost him 3 million won ($2,892) for production.
"I felt extremely sorry that the temple's main building will disappear, so I just used some of my talent to keep it alive," Mr. Lim said. "The instruments have excellent sounds, so the cello will probably be worth 30 million won and the violin at least 15 million won."
Mr. Lim also built a wooden shelf to display the instruments and donated them to Naksan Temple, where they are currently on display to the public.

If prayers could put out Assam oil fire

Posted on 28 Sep 2005 # IANS

By Syed Zarir Hussain, Guwahati: Firefighters battling to douse a massive two-week-old blaze at an oil well in Assam have sought divine blessings to extinguish the fire.

An official for the state-owned exploration firm, Oil India Limited (OIL), said scores of workers late Tuesday joined a group of Buddhist monks who held a special prayer at the fire site in Dikom, 520 km east of Assam's main city Guwahati, in northeastern India.

"A group of local Buddhist monks came on their own and offered prayers at the well site so that the fire could be put out soon. Many of the workers present at the site joined the prayers," the OIL official who requested anonymity said on telephone from Dikom.

The prayer lasted for about 30 minutes and was led by Sumedhananda Bhikkhu, head priest of a local Buddhist monastery in eastern Assam.

"We were all concerned about the oil well fire and so decided to offer prayers to invoke divine blessings for an early end to the fire," Bhikkhu said on telephone.

The well was damaged on Sep 13, causing oil and natural gas to escape from the site in a remote tea-growing area of Assam. The gas ignited two days later. The cause of the oil spill is yet to be ascertained as the intense heat from the well fire is preventing workers from moving closer.

A four-member US team of experts from the Texas-based Boots and Coots International Well Control is supervising the operations.

"Almost 90 percent of the equipment and machinery required by the experts to begin operations to put out the blaze and cap the well have arrived and maybe in a day or two we should be able to start the actual work," OIL spokesman P.K. Deva Choudhury told IANS on telephone from the company headquarters in Duliajan in eastern Assam.

Oil India authorities had tried to douse the flames but given up and summoned experts from the Boots and Coots who arrived Sep 16. The US team was planning to simultaneously spray water and sand at a very high pressure to put out the fire and then start capping the leaking oil well.

The well blowout had forced OIL authorities to shut down operations at the Dikom oilfield having 30 wells that produces about 1,200 kilolitres (6,000 barrels) of crude daily.

According to estimates, OIL has suffered a production loss of about 84,000 barrels of crude since Sep 13.

India produces about 30 million tonnes of crude oil annually, with Assam accounting for five million tonnes of the total.
