Bayou's Asian-Americans try to recover: 'We'll get by'

BAYOU LA BATRE -- Shaded by a lotus leaf, the statue of the Buddhist character Bodhisattva Quan Am rose 20 feet high at the edge of the temple Chua Chanh Giac in Bayou La Batre, looking out at the hurricane-rav aged surroundings with a serene gaze.

Inside the temple Sunday, Lingthong, a Buddhist monk, cleaned up debris from Hurricane Katrina with the help of congregants.

"We'll get by," said Jack Davis, 47, who was born in Saigon with the birth name Tuoi Tran. Tran, who had fled Vietnam on a boat when he was a teenager, works as a welder nearby, and is now without employment. As he fixed the door of the temple where he regularly worships -- Sunday services have been canceled because of Ka trina damage -- he said there was hope that the Federal Emergency Management Agency would give the temple money to rebuild.

If not, he said, hammering away, "We'll do it step by step."

Step by step seemed to be a watchword Sunday along Railroad Street in the Bayou. In one of the Alabama communities hardest hit by Katrina -- and where a Red Cross shelter, at the nearby Bayou La Batre community center, helped hurricane victims of all backgrounds -- some Vietnamese-Americans spent Sunday taking care of their own.

As the monk, Lingthong, stepped outdoors, donned her prayer robe, and walked toward the religious statue, she explained, in halting English, that she was based at another temple, in Ohio, and had only just arrived in Bayou La Batre.

A calm woman with a shaved head whose own family came from war-torn Vietnam as refugees a generation ago, Lingthong said she traveled south from Ohio to help out because the monk in charge had to leave town. The Bayou La Batre monk, she explained, was going to other Buddhist temples to seek aid. "She is getting donations to help this temple," said Lingthong.

Danny Vo, an out-of-work welder, said the donations would help restore the temple, which acts as an important center for the Buddhist Vietnamese, who are part of the larger Vietnamese community, of different faiths, who together constitute a sizable part of the local population.

U.S. Census Bureau informa tion for 2000, the most recent year available, shows that 33.3 percent of Bayou La Batre's population is of Asian background. Less than 1 percent of the population is Asian in the entire state of Alabama.

As Vo looked about at storm-beaten walls and figures of the Buddha on the half-empty altar, he said that, concerning long-term employment, "We will wait."

Zen women’s temple welcomes all worshippers

ALEXANDER — Upon hearing about the Great Tree Zen Women’s Temple, some people’s first thought might be of a group of man-hating women delving into their spirituality away from the “corrupting” influence of men.

But if they sat down and talked with the temple’s founder, the Rev. Teijo Munnich, they’d realize they couldn’t be more wrong. While the temple will offer a residency program for women only, men and children are welcome to participate in meditations at Great Tree, Munnich said.

Munnich said there is something inherently male about Zen and about the practices surrounding the Buddhist form of spirituality she feels makes it more attractive to men. She said she is seeking a balance to the practice of meditation by offering an opportunity for women to practice together.

“I grew up in the Catholic Church, which is also pretty dominantly male,” she said. “I went to all-girls Catholic schools and one thing that I know is that when women are together doing anything, there is something different.”

Munnich said while the format the women will use for the meditation may be based on traditional practices, she wants to see how women can help meditation develop.

“I’m not trying to define what is women’s spirituality,” she said.

Munnich thinks one of the reasons women haven’t taken a larger role in the development of Zen meditation is because they are often busy with the demands of family. When she was practicing Zen at the Zen Center of Minnesota, she knew a couple of committed women who were ordained Buddhist priests and mothers.

“The thing that was really significant to me is that they were constantly struggling to find that balance, and of course the children won out,” she said. “One of the biggest difficulties for them was that the practice wasn’t very accessible for children.”

This is why one of Munnich’s priorities is making children aware of and comfortable with practicing Zen meditation. She wants the women who come for residencies to be able to bring their children. Women won’t be able to bring their children to every event, but Munnich feels it’s important for children to be involved with Zen practices.

Jenny Knapp of Asheville has been focused on practicing Zen for the past five years. She said she appreciates Munnich’s acceptance and inclusion of children in meditation practice.

“She has a real heart for children,” said Knapp, who involves her 2-year-old son, Gavin, in the practice. “When Gavin was a little baby I used to put him down on a cushion next to me during meditations.”

Munnich wants Great Tree to be a place women can come for a residency and avoid disruptions so they can immerse themselves in their spirituality. Zen practitioners, men and women, will eventually be able to come and camp on the grounds of Great Tree for retreats.

“It’s very difficult to be constantly coming and going, even for retreats,” she said. “Going to a retreat and going home at night creates a lot of distractions.”

Almost as if to emphasize the importance of family, one of the first events Munnich held at the temple was a family meditation day, which is an extension of what she has been doing at the Zen Center of Asheville, said Paige Gilchrist of Asheville.

Gilchrist said when she was thrilled when she heard that Munnich’s dreams of opening a temple for women was coming to fruition, but she was worried that the Zen Center of Asheville would be losing a spiritual teacher.

“We would really be sister sanghas (“sangha” is the Buddhist term for congregation or community),” Gilchrist said.

The idea of a woman’s monastic center has the sound of isolation and separation, she said.

“It’s quite the opposite,” Gilchrist said. “It’s this large, vibrant bustling place. I think it’s going to be a real gathering spot.”

Dalai Lama encourages hurricane Katrina victims to not lose hope
AP, Sept 12, 2005

WASHINGTON, USA -- The Dalai Lama offered a message of hope Sunday to the thousands of victims of hurricane Katrina, saying such tragedies often bring out the best in human nature.

The exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader, who is on a 20-day U.S. visit, told ABC's This Week that the outpouring of sympathy and support from around the world for those devastated in the southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama "is a sign of human compassion."

"In our blood, the seed of compassion is there, because we are a social animal," he said. "Generally, where there is a challenge, we have the capacity to overcome that challenge."

The Dalai Lama is making his first trip to America since 2003. He encouraged hurricane victims to put their faith in their fellow human beings.

"When we are really passing through a difficult period, it is very important to try to keep calm," he said. "And then, most important, you should not lose hope and optimism. We must keep our determination, our self-confidence and look at more wider perspective."

The Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Prize in 1989, is known as an envoy for peace and tolerance. He is based in northern India, where he fled the Chinese Red Army's march into Tibet in 1959.

Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama would lay the foundation stone of a global training centre for monks during a three-day celebration at Bodhgaya in February next year marking the 2550th Buddha Jayanti celebrations to be attended by Buddhist spiritual leaders from across the world.
The Bhikkhu Training Centre, land for which has already been acquired, would train monks from across the world and send them as propagators of the message of Buddhism to all parts of the globe, President of Maha Bodhi Society of India Dr Bhupendra Modi told a press meet on Saturday.

The Buddhist spiritual leader is also scheduled to attend seminars on contribution of foreign Buddhist monasteries in spreading Buddhism in India and the role of Anagarika Dharmapala in revival of Buddhism in South-East Asia as part of the year-long celebrations beginning in Kolkata on January seven, 2006.

"The celebrations would be inaugurated either by the President or the Vice-President of the country here. The three day inaugural programme in Kolkata will include an international conference on humanism and unveiling of a book on 2550 years of Buddhism in India," Modi said.

The inaugural function will be attended by the chief dharma leader of the order Satyanarayan Goenka. A global conference on peace to be presented in six languages simultaneously will be inaugurated by the President or Prime Minister of the country in New Delhi on April eight with over 200 Japanese Buddhist preachers attending it.
