No. 0488 (Tinh Tấn dịch)

Greening picks on in Indian capital
25 August 2005

We have often heard of initiatives where planting of trees and sensitizing people on the subject of environmental conservation is encouraged, but here are a few examples of activities where the effort is not only to create awareness but to ensure long-term sustainability of growth of plants into rich, lustrous trees.

At an hour’s drive from Delhi, on the Delhi--Jaipur highway, there exists the Soka Bodhi Tree Garden, a refreshing delight, considering the shrinking green belt in and around Delhi. The garden is a vast array of green pastures spread over 170 acres of land. Approximately 2500 bodhi (peepal) tree saplings/plants have been planted on this land by Bharat Soka Gakkai, a non-governmental organization working on peace, culture, and education, with its philosophy based on the spiritual tenets of Buddhism.

Every year, a mustard seed crop is grown on the vacant land in the garden and the crop is donated to the local community who, by selling it generates funds to the tune of 120 000 rupees (approx. US $2800). This money is used to provide community facilities such as classrooms in the local village schools. The garden is also used for holding discussions and cultural programmes. Soka members hope that in the next 100--200 years, these plants and saplings would turn into huge trees, making the place a centre for people from all walks of life to hold cultural, educational, and peace activities, much like Tagore and Gandhi.

Closer home, as part of an initiative in south Delhi, a plan to plant 160 000 trees and 275 000 shrubs in parks all over the capital was revealed at a Van Mahotsava function organized by the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) at Smriti Van in Vasant Kunj. The Smriti Van is spread over 13.6 acres and the existing depressions even serve as water-harvesting ponds. DDA also plans to plant 32 500 trees along the national highways.

In yet another initiative, the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature)-India, in its effort to draw attention to the importance of nurturing plants to ensure that they turn into full-grown trees, has come up with an ‘Adopt a plant’ campaign. As the name suggests, it is more than just planting a sapling---people are invited to take a free sapling from the WWF but with a pledge that the person will nurture it into a tree. The WWF will also regularly monitor the growth of the tree. Also, these saplings are chosen scientifically on the basis of their capacity to give more oxygen and less carbon dioxide and consume less groundwater.
