Collapsed Chiang Mai pagoda declared danger zone

CHIANG MAI, Aug 20 (TNA) - The area near an historic five-century-old pagoda (chedi) which collapsed in a Buddhist temple compound on Friday after heavy rain lashed this former northern capital has been declared
a "danger zone" by provincial authorities.

Safety nets have been installed some five metres away from the 505-year-old chedi within the precincts of the historic Pan On Temple in downtown Chiang Mai.

Visitors have been barred from entering the temple compound due both to concern that further rainfall might collapse another part of the ancient pagoda on the eastern flank and hurt passers-by and that some
visitors might attempt to carry away historic artefacts.

Municipality officials are now guarding the collapsed structure on a round-the-clock basis with particular concern for the possible theft of Buddha amulets which were kept inside the pagoda, built during the
reign of the 12th king of the Meng Rai dynasty.

The abbot of the temple believes the collapse resulted from rain entering the structure through cracks.

Residents living nearby the temple said they believed that the collapse might have resulted from the temple's ongoing restoration work on two chedis, which made them vulnerable to damage. They said construction workers had drilled into the stupa's base for an inspection just two days before it collapsed.

Local residents said the drilling made it vulnerable to further rainwater seepage into the already damaged chedi making it collapse.

Fine Arts Department officials will inspect the damaged structure soon. (TNA)-E111

Thai court spares founder of Dhammakaya
Bangkok Post, Aug 23, 2006

Embezzled temple assets returned

Bangkok, Thailand -- The prosecution has withdrawn an embezzlement charge against Phra Dhammachayo, former abbot of Wat Dharmakaya temple, and his close disciple following the return of the embezzled assets.

Late in 1999, the prosecution charged the former abbot, 62, and Thavorn Phromthavorn, 57, with embezzling about 36 million baht in cash belonging to the temple in Pathum Thani.

The money was used to buy two plots of land, covering over 900 rai, in tambon Nong Phra of Wang Sai Phun district in Phichit. Mr Thavorn was registered as the owner of the plots.

The entire amount embezzled stood at 959.3 million baht and the money spent on the two plots was part of it.

The abbot was also charged with distorting Buddhist teachings and causing conflicts among monks.

However, Winyu Winyakul, executive director of the office of criminal litigation, requested the withdrawal of the case in court on Monday. The request reasoned that the former abbot and his follower contributed to proper Buddhist teachings and supported religious activities involving both state and private sector projects.

In addition, he said, they had returned all the 959.3 million baht cash and land suspected of being misappropriated from the temple.

The return of assets is in line with the Supreme Patriarch's directive that monks must hand their assets generated during their monkhood to their temples.

The prosecution stated that the suit stood to create a bigger rift between the clergy and laymen had it been pursued. It felt that it would be best to withdraw the case for the sake of unity in society.

The court approved the withdrawal yesterday.

The withdrawal also effectively annuls the prosecution's investigation concerning suspected embezzlement of the temple's 930 million baht by the former abbot and his followers and suspected forgery of documents by his disciples.

Athapol Yaisawang, spokesman of the Office of the Attorney-General, said yesterday the case could be withdrawn as long as the court had not delivered a verdict.

There have been similar withdrawals of criminal lawsuits for violations of the national forest reserve act and lawsuits against rebels and terrorists, he said.

Outspoken monk Phra Phayom Kalayano, abbot of Wat Suan Kaew temple in Nonthaburi, said it is difficult to act against Wat Dharmakaya because its followers include influential and prominent people.

If the prosecution had gone all the way with the case, it could have provoked the temple's followers into violent responses, he said.

The government also used Wat Dharmakaya as the venue for a recent gathering of local administrators from across the country, the monk noted.

He said the withdrawal was not beyond his expectation. ''With the let-off, the temple may now get the impression that the law was on its side, and it could do whatever it wanted.

''From now on, if religious offenders have influential support in court, it will be difficult for them to lose the case,'' said the abbot.

At peace in Tarpon Springs
A Buddhist center introduces overburdened minds and bodies to the benefits of meditation.

TARPON SPRINGS - In a chaotic world filled with work, computers, television and cell phones, scientists Pat and Michael Lawman found that they simply could not turn off their racing minds when it came time to go to sleep at night.

But instead of medication, they turned to meditation.

The experiment worked.

"We went home and slept all the way through the night for the first time in years," 53-year-old Pat Lawman said of her first time practicing the ancient art more than two years ago.

The Lawmans own Morphogenesis, a biotech company in Oldsmar, and were two of several people who participated in a new Buddhist meditation class led by France Roy this week.

Because of increased demand, the Parbawatiya Buddhist Center, based in Safety Harbor, is offering an introductory "branch class" from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. every Wednesday at the Tarpon Springs Community Center, at 400 S Walton Ave.

Roy, 22, a graduate of DeVry University and a computer software developer at Image One in Tampa, has practiced meditation since he was 16.

He is now the education program coordinator at the Parbawatiya Meditation Center, which was established in 1996 by kadam, or teacher, Nick Gillespie.

Parbawatiya (pronounced par-bah-wah-tee-ya) is the name of a female Buddha of Wisdom. In the Sanskrit language, the name means "radiant dawn" and calls to mind the blissful wisdom of an enlightened being.

Gillespie is the resident teacher at the center in Safety Harbor, the Kancha Buddhist Center in Sarasota and the Drolma Buddhist Center in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area.

The centers he founded were the first of their kind in Florida to offer classes in the New Kadampa Buddhist tradition. New Kadampa Buddhism, a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (982-1054 A.D.), is easier for Westerners to "integrate into their daily lives to become more peaceful and loving people," Roy said.

"It encompasses all 84,000 teachings of Buddha," he said. "They can be bits of advice or entire sutras."

To encourage participants to relax their minds, let go of worries and find lasting happiness, Roy uses breathing exercises and guided meditation.

He asks the students to let go of jealousy, anger, ignorance and other delusions, or what he called poisons, that block happiness.

He asks them to sit up straight in their chairs, lightly close their eyes and place their hands in their laps with their thumbs gently touching.

"Starting at the crown of your head, slowly work down your body and let any tightness dissolve away," he tells the participants. "Scan down your arms and feel as though you are letting go of heavy pieces of luggage. Simply feel them fall away. Scan down your legs, letting any stress that remains in your body flow out of your feet."

Ed Bashaw, 43, has been practicing meditation for a year and said it has improved his life.

"It calms my mind," said Bashaw, who works in the airline industry. "It helps me better handle stressful situations that come up during the day."
