Oldest Buddhism literature in Chinese discovered in N. China

UPDATED: 17:24, January 19, 2006

"Zhu Fo Yao Ji Jing", a collection of Buddhist sutra in Chinese, has been discovered out of a number of fragments in Dalian, a coastal city in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Some of the slates are as large of magazines we read and some of them are as small as nail.

As the oldest Buddhism literature in Chinese, the collection was completed in 296 AD during Chinese Western Jin Dynasty (265-317).

Researchers with the Lushun Museum in Lushun city of Liaoning Province devoted themselves to sticking the fragments together and make them into a book.

It took two months for them to complete the work, combining totally 14 pieces into 11 tablets, the smallest of which contains fewer than ten characters.

Hội Nghị đề cao giá trị Phụ Nữ Phật Giáo Á Châu

Wednesday January 18, 2006

Funds raised from the dinner will be used to sponsor nuns and Buddhist laywomen from other Asian countries to the conference in June.

Empowering Asian Buddhist women
Wednesday January 18, 2006

HAVING been held in eight Asian countries, the Sakyadhita International Conference, aimed at improving the lives of Buddhist women while developing their potential, will be held in Malaysia for the first time.

In conjunction with this, Buddhist Maha Vihara and Malaysian Buddhist Association organised a dinner on Saturday at the Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

Funds raised from the dinner will be used to sponsor nuns and Buddhist laywomen from other Asian countries to the conference in June.

Women, Family and Community Development Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun launched the dinner alongside Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women president Venerable Karma Lekshe Tsomo and Venerable Chang Heng, chairman of the conference organising committee in Malaysia.

Chew flanked by Lekshe Tsomo (left) and Chang, receiving a token of appreciation from the fund-raising dinner organising chairperson Rupa Peyadasa.
Sakyadhita is an international alliance of women founded in Bodhgaya, India, in 1987.

“There are an estimated 300 million Buddhist women worldwide, including 130,000 who are nuns. Many of these women live in poverty, without adequate opportunities for education or facilities for religious practice,” said Chew.

“We recognise that this conference can empower women and they will ensure a dynamic nation in the near future,” she added.

She said the Government had demonstrated strong commitment for women’s advancement in every aspect, but women’s security remained vulnerable to increasing gender-based violence like rape, snatch theft and domestic violence.

She called for smart partnerships between government agencies, society, media and non-governmental organisations to combat gender-based violence, and commended the organising committee for its efforts.

Lekshe Tsomo said it was unique that the conference would take place in a multi-cultural country.

“Here, we can bring people from different backgrounds together and establish a world of peace. This time around, we will discuss the roles of Buddhist women in a global multi-cultural community,” she said.

Chang said the conference would be attended by delegates from 45 countries.

She said women play a crucial role in society because they were gentle, compassionate, meticulous, motherly and care for the less fortunate.

The 9th Sakyadhita International Conference on Buddhist Women will be held from June 17 to 21 at the Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre.

Amaravati all set to get a face-lift
Monday January 16 2006 10:49 IST
VIJAYAWADA: Amaravati, one of the ancient holy towns in the country, will get a face-lift soon.
Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy responded positively to the plea made by Dalai Lama in this regard. Dalai has been insisting on developing the village into an international Buddhist centre.

The Chief Minister has assured him that it will be soon developed as a major Buddhist destination. He also promised to start a regional tourism office in the town.

When Dalai Lama visited Amaravati in 1987, he said this place is very sacred for them.

“We read about the place in the books and finally came to know actual site of Amarvati now,” he observed.

After one and half decades, he agreed to give his Kalachakra Empowerment here.

Though Buddhism was born in Bihar, it was spread to other places throughout the world from here.

Though Amaravati is considered a Buddhist place, only this Kalachakra has made people to realise the historical importance of the site. Principal secretary endowments DC Rosaiah said now Amaravati has acquired international fame.

This is mostly due to the Buddha Stupa located here is the highest in the world.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regional director Dr Jitendra Das said they will make efforts to preserve the Stupa. The Government is keen on developing Amaravati into an international ‘Buddh Adarsh Matham’.

He also indicated that efforts were on to bring here some more marble remnants of Amaravati Stupa from Egmore Museum.
