Kim Thân Phật Vĩ Đại được dựng lên ở miền Bắc Ấn Độ

Kim Thân Phật lớn nhất trên thế giới được xây dựng tại Uttar Pradesh ở miền Bắc Ấn Độ, làm nhỏ hẳn đi các Kim Thân Phật lớn khác của các lãnh đạo tôn giáo tại Nhật và Trung Quốc.

Kim Thân Đức Phật Di Lạc, hay Đức Phật Tương Lai, cao 150 mét sẽ được xây dựng trên 267 mẫu Tây (660 mẫu Anh) ở Kushinagar là một thành phố vùng biên giới với Nepal. Kushinagar là nơi mà Đức Phật Thích Ca đã Nhập Diệt, hay Niết Bàn, cách đây hơn 2,500 năm.

Được đúc bằng đồng, Kim Thân Phật cao ngất sẽ ngự trên một bảo tọa là một tòa lầu 17 tầng. Nhỏ hơn là bức tượng 12 mét (40 feet) và một chánh điện rộng lớn, các phòng thờ, và những dãy vườn.

Công trình120 triệu bảng Anh này là sản phẩm tinh thần của Maitreya Project Trust dựa căn bản vào thành phố Gorakhpur và được ủng hộ bởi liên bang và một nhóm các tôn giáo Nhật bản.

Ông Cn Dubey, bí thư văn hóa của chính quyền Uttar Pradesh tuyên bố: “Kushinagar đã thu hút rất nhiều Phật tử đến hành hương, nhưng một khi công trình được hoàn tất thì Kushinagar sẽ trở thành một trung tâm Phật Giáo quốc tế chính yếu”.

Những kim thân vĩ đại của Đức Phật là cách nhìn chung ở Á Châu. Thi dụ Kim Thân Phật bằng đá cao nhất thế giới là Kim Thân Phật ở Leshan cao 67 mét trong tỉnh Sichuan ở Trung Quốc. Kim Thân Phật ở Bamiyan tại Afghanistan, đã bị tàn phá bởi Taliban, cao 53 mét và rộng 34 mét.

The world's biggest statue of the Buddha is to be built in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, dwarfing other colossal representations of the religious leader in Japan and China.
The 150-metre-high Buddha Maitreya, or Buddha of the Future, will be installed on a 267-hectare (660-acre) site at Kushinagar, a town on the border with Nepal, where the Buddha died, or attained nirvana, 2,500 years ago.
Cast from bronze, the soaring Buddha will sit on a throne which itself will be a 17-storey building housing a smaller, 12-metre (40ft) statue and a vast prayer hall, shrine rooms and terraced gardens.
The £120m project is the brainchild of the Maitreya Project Trust based in Gorakhpur city and is supported by the state government and a Japanese religious group.
"Kushinagar already attracts many Buddhist pilgrims, but once the project is completed it will become a major international Buddhist centre," said CN Dubey, culture secretary in the Uttar Pradesh government.
Kushinagar's Buddha would have been the largest statue in the world were it not that an even bigger statue, the 169-metre-tall Spirit of Houston, is planned for the American space city. If the Buddha symbolises universal peace, the shimmering chrome Houston statue of a woman in a flowing cape will project the idea of intergalactic friendship.
Colossal representations of the Buddha are a common sight in Asia. The world's tallest stone statue, for instance, is the 67-metre Leshan Buddha in China's Sichuan province. The Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban, were 53 metres and 34 metres tall.
