Petaling, Jaya: Vị Tăng Trưởng, lãnh đạo tinh thần tối cao của Phật Giáo Mã Lai và Tân Gia Ba, Trưởng Lão K.Sri Dhammananda đã viên tịch tại Trung Tâm Y Tế Subang Jaya, Malaysia lúc 12.42 pm ngày thứ Năm 31 tháng 08, 2006, hưởng thọ 87 tuổi với 66 năm hạ lạp.
Những ai muốn thăm viếng đảnh lễ Ngài lần cuối cùng có thể đến Tu Viện Maha Vihara tại Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur cho đến 2.00 pm ngày Chủ Nhật.
Một buổi lễ điếu tang sẽ được tổ chức vào lúc 1:00 pm Chủ Nhật 03 tháng 09 và kim quan sẽ được di chuyển đến Nirvana Memorial Park ở Semenyih vào lúc 3 giờ chiều.
Tín chúng được khuyên là nên dùng phương tiện giao thông công cộng và không nên gửi vòng hoa phúng điếu trong thời gian cử hành tang lễ.
Ðược kính trọng bởi Phật tử và kể cả những người không phải Phật tử, Ngài Dhammananda đã viết trên 47 quyển sách về Phật Pháp đã được phổ biến khắp thế giới và được dịch ra nhiều ngôn ngữ khác nhau.
Chủ tịch chùa Maha Vihara, Ông Sarath W. Sirende miêu tả Ngài Dhammananda như một người trí tuệ và chu đáo, người liên hệ tốt đẹp với cả giới già lẫn trẻ.

Tôi cảm thấy bắt buộc phải biểu lộ sự tôn kính của tôi với Ngài lần cuối (bằng cách trở lại Kuala Lumpur lần nữa để tham dự tang lễ của Ngài) thay mặt cho các đoàn thể Tăng Già Việt Nam và Phật tử trong cũng như ngoài nước.
Sự cống hiến của Ngài, trực tiếp hoăc gián tiếp, đã ảnh hưởng đến rất nhiều người trong chúng tôi qua sách vở của Ngài, qua lời giảng dậy của Ngài và qua sự tiếp xúc thân cận với Ngài. Mỗi bận du hành đến Mã lai, tôi đều đến tạm trú chùa Maha Vihara ở Brickfield, và từ đó, đã phát triển một sự tôn kính của tôi đối với Ngài qua trí tuệ, từ tâm và sự cởi mở của Ngài. Mặc dù trong hệ thống tôn ti trật tự của Tăng Ðòan, tôi thuộc hàng hậu bối so với Ngài, sự đơn giản, khiêm tốn, thẳng thắn, cẩn trọng và sự ủng hộ của Ngài đến cho tôi, một khách tăng năm khi mười họa, đã khiến tôi nghĩ rằng Ngài là một sư phụ khác của tôi.
Trong một chuyến du hành đến Kuala Lumpur hồi cuối thập niên 80, Ngài đã yêu cầu tôi ngồi chung với Ngài cùng với một tăng sĩ Sinhala khác tại chùa Maha Vihara trong buổi lễ Truyền Giới Sa Di hằng năm. Tôi là một tỳ kheo đã thọ giới năm 1974 theo truyên thống Ðại Thừa, tôi đã không biết chắc được bao nhiêu lần Ngài đã yêu cầu tăng sĩ Ðại Thừa ngồi chung tham dự lễ thọ giới của tu sĩ Theravada như Ngài đã làm với tôi.
Tôi rất lấy làm ân hận rằng trong chuyến du hành đến Bangkok hồi đâu tháng 8 để tham dự buổi họp trù bị tổ chức lễ hội Vesak Liên Hiệp Quốc năm 2007, tôi đã được biết Ngài sang Tân Gia Ba vì lý do sức khỏe nhưng tôi đã không thể làm một chuyến du hành phụ sang Tân Gia Ba để vấn an Ngài( Trong một tai nạn té ngã hồi cuối tháng giêng, 2006, tôi bị gãy cả hai chân phải ngồi xe lăn sau 2 tháng nằm viện). Trong những ngày ngắn ngủi ở Bangkok, tôi có cái cảm giác rằng có thể đó là cơ hội cuối cùng để viếng thăm trong khi Ngài vẫn còn tại thế. Nơi đây tôi xin sám hối một cách sâu xa về thái độ lưỡng lự của tôi đối với một bậc đạo sư gương mẫu đáng kỉnh mộ của tôi.
Sư Cả, cầu xin Ngài lượng thứ cho tầm nhìn hạn hẹp của con.
Cuộc đời Ngài, việc làm Ngài, trí tuệ Ngài đã khắc sâu vào tâm khảm và cuộc đời con.
54 năm sự nghiệp hoằng pháp của Ngài tại Mã Lai, Tân Gia Ba và thế giới đã để lại cho chúng con sự giác ngộ cao thượng, từ tâm vô biên, trí tuệ vô ngần và công đức vô lượng của Ngài
Ba lạy kính đảnh lễ Ngài hôm nay. Con hẹn sẽ đến tận Kuala Lumpur để tiễn đưa Ngài lần cuối.

Rev Dhammananda: A wise and caring man who related well to the young and the old.
PETALING JAYA: The Chief High Priest of Malaysia and Singapore, Venerable Dr K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera, passed away peacefully at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre at 12.42pm yesterday. He was 87.
Those who wish to pay their last respects may do so at the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, until 2pm on Sunday.
A eulogy ceremony will be held at 1pm on Sunday and the cortege will leave at 3pm for the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih.
Devotees are advised to use public transport and also not to send wreaths during the funeral ceremony. They are also advised to wear white.
Rev Dhammananda was born on March 18, 1919, in southern Sri Lanka. He came to Malaya on Jan 2, 1952, to administer to the needs of the Buddhist community here.
Revered by both Buddhists and non-Buddhists throughout the world, Rev Dhammananda wrote more than 47 books on Buddhism which were distributed worldwide and translated into various languages.

Malaysia and Singapore's Chief Monk passes away

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- The Chief monk of Malaysia and Singapore, Ven. Dr K Sri Dhammananda Maha Nayaka Thera passed away peacefully at 12.42 pm today. He was 87.
Born in the small village of Kirinde, Matara in southern Sri Lanka on March 18, 1919, Ven. Dr K Sri Dhammananda or "Chief" as he is fondly called, was ordained at the age of 12. He was given the name "Dhammananda" which means "one who experiences happiness through Dhamma." At the age of 22. he received higher ordination (upasampada) under Venerable K Ratanapala Maha Thera, the Chief abbot of Kotawila Vihara. Ven. Dr K Sri Dhammananda came to Malaya (now Malaysia) in January 1952. He has since then made Malaysia his adopted home. His contribution to the development of Buddhism in pre-independence Malaya and then modern Malaysia is beyond measure.
He was foremost in promoting Buddhist education to the grassroot and was responsible to bring basic Buddha-Dharma teachings to the lay people. The venerable's impact was especially felt amongst the English speaking local Buddhists.
Meanwhile at the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Kuala Lumpur, the venerable's body was brought back to the vihara at around 5.30 pm today local time. The temple has declared 3 days of official mourning.
Members of the public can pay their last respect to the venerable at the "Dewan Asoka". The funeral will take place on Sunday.

Not time to grief, says Ajahn Brahmavamso

Perth, Australia -- Well known Dharma teacher Ajahn Brahmavamso in a condolence message from Australia has advised devotees in Malaysia that now is not the time to grief over the loss of their much beloved Chief Venerable Dr K Sri Dhammananda, who passed away today.
He said that people should instead feel grateful that they have come to know such a great being and how they have benefited from his teachings.
Ajahn also said that it is timely to reflect on impermanence, non-satisfactoriness and non-self characteristics in ourselves, on our loved ones and all conditioned things.
He also advised that it is a good time to observe the Eight Precepts and to share merits with our the late Chief Venerable.

Please inform me the Chief funeral services procedures. I felt compel to show my last respect to him (by coming to KL again for attending his memorial services) on behalf of many Vietnamese Sangha and lay Buddhists, living abroad and in Vietnam.
Both by direct and by distant contributions, the Chief had influenced many of us thru his books, his teachings and his contacts.
Since 1985 onward, I had come to KL for seeing Vietnamese refugees in Pulau Bidong (bringing to thoudsands of boatpeole Dhamma and gifts that I could afford, since I was also a boatmonk myself, just escaping Communist persecutions and landed Malaysia shore on 22/3/1983, only resettled in Sydney on 2/11/2983) and Sungei Besi, KL outskirt. Every trip to Malaysia, with theI came to stay at Brickfield temple and have since then developed anormous respect to the Chief thru his wisdom, compassion, open-minded approach to life (and to me, in a sence) and so on. Despite the fac that I am much in juniority to him in Sangha ranking, his simple, modest, straithforward, considerate, and supportive toward me, an occasional guest monk, that made me thinking of him as another Master of mine with his universally mastering character/conduct.
Once in a late 1980s trip to KL, he even asked me to sit with him and other Sinhalese Sangha at the KL Temple annual Novitiate Program's Ordination Preceptor Council!! I am a Bikkhu ordained in Vietnam in 1974 -with Dhammagupta Vinaya Patimokkha version, that had made me to be labelled as 'Mahayana' , a view I am sure that was not shared by the Chief. I am not sure that how often he had asked other 'mahayana' Sangha sitting with him for jointly ordaining 'theravada' monks like he did with me.
I am very much in regret that during my early August 2006 trip to Bangkok for attending the UN Vesak 2007 Preparatory Meeting, I had been informed about the Chief travelling to Singapore for his health problems, but not be able (due to a terrible fall accident in late Jan 2006 with 2 months hospitalised and 3 operations for my both broken legs and smashed kneels and ankles that had made me now a wheelchair-bound monk who has to be looked after by few attending sangha disciples at all times) to made a side trip to Sangapore/KL for seeing him. For those few days in Bangko, I have got a sense that that may be my last chance to visit him while he was still alive. I am hereby deeply confessing my undecisive attitude toward a noble, model, admirable Master of mine.
Please the Chief, forgive me for my shortsight.
Your life, your works, your wisdom had deeply engraved to my mind and my life.
Your 54 years of Dhamma missions in Malaysia, Singapore and the world have left to us your supreme enlightenment, your borderless compassion, your unsurpassed wisdom and your uncountable services.
Three deep bow for now. I am looking to be arriving KL on the due course.
