Some Residents Oppose Buddhist Temple Near Caledonia
Buddhism One Of Largest Religions
POSTED: 12:57 pm CDT August 11, 2005
CALEDONIA, Wis. -- Some Racine County residents oppose a Buddhist colony's plans to build near Caledonia.
Buddhists have filed building and zoning applications to build a temple, meditation building, fellowship hall and nun facility on 13 acres in Racine County.
Opponents said Caledonia is an odd place for a Buddhist temple.
Resident Joyce Brainard sent an e-mail to county planners expressing her concern that a Buddhist complex wouldn't be a good use of high-value property. Brainard said there are others who feel the same.
The Buddhists who want to use the temple are mainly immigrants from Laos of first-generation Laotian-Americans who live in southern Milwaukee County and said they need more space.
Buddhism is one of the largest religions of the world, with about 3 million believers living in the United States.
Racine County officials are expected to discuss the proposal next week.
