May 12 21:57
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla will attend the commemoration of Buddhism`s Enlightenment Day of Waisak at the Borobudur temple, Magelang, Central Java, on Saturday evening, the committee said here on Friday.
The secretary of the Waisak Commemoration Committee, Lieus Sungkharisma, said after a meeting with the Vice President that Kalla had agreed to attend the event.
The Vice President would attend the function as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who was originally expected to come to the event had cancelled the plan as on the same day he had to be at a state ceremony in Bali.
"The President is unable to attend the Darmashanti Waisak celebration this year so that we requested the Vice President`s readiness," Lieus said.
So far, there are two organizations for the Buddhist community in Indonesia, namely "Walubi" (Indonesia Buddhist Council) and KASI (the Indonesian Supreme Shangha Conference).
Lieus said that representatives of Walubi and KASI held a meeting at Religious Minister M Maftuh Basyuni`s house in 2005 where the two Buddhist organizations agreed that the celebration of a Waisak Day would be organized on a rotating basis by Walubi and KASI.
"Last year, President Yudhoyono attended the Waisak Day celebration which was organized by Walubi. Now when it is organized by KASI, we hope that the event would also be attended by the President," he said.
But the President is unable to attend so that we hope the Vice President would attend the Saturday commemoration, he added.
