Buddhist Nun discusses teachings in Montrose

Thursday, April 20, 2006

James Shea. Daily Press Writer

MONTROSE — Voices wandered through the room like ripples on a lake. The language was Chinese but the message was universal.

“Homage to the bodhisattva who observes all sounds in the world,” chanted the 30 people who attended a lecture by Buddhist Nun Heng Yin Shr Wednesday.

Shr lives at a Buddhist monastery in Northern California and discussed the basic teachings of Buddhism and her journey to becoming a monk.

“Buddhism is a religion that focus on practice,” said Shr, who wore a yellow nun’s robe.

She said she grew up in Austin, Texas and attended the University of Texas, where she studied computer science. Shr said she started looking for answers to deep philosophical questions in college.

“What is my life about? What am I meant to do? How can I make a difference?” Shr asked.

She said she eventually came in contact with Buddhist teachings when a monk from the City of 10,000 Buddhas visited campus.

“It really struck a cord with me,” Shr said.

She eventually attended a retreat at the monastery in California and learned meditation and some of the religion’s basic teachings. Shr said she started to feel a connection to the practice.

“It was very different experience to go inside yourself and be quiet,” Shr said of meditation.

After graduation, she decided to join the monastery full time and said he parents were supportive. She said life at the monastery is very regimented and she is required to pray and meditate several hours a day.

Shr said she wanted to educate the group but was not interested in converting people. She said everyone who learns about Buddhist teachings will take a different path but everyone has the same goal.

“I don’t mean to say that my path is the right path,” Shr said.

She said the goal of Buddhism is enlightenment where people free themselves from the suffering of death and desires. Shr said people begin to move toward enlightenment when they honor their parents and try not to hold grudges against them.

The goal is to become a Buddha, or who one who is awakened.

Shr said Buddhism was started by a prince in Indian and eventually came to China where it mixed with Confucianism and Taoism. She said the founder of her school came to the United States from China when the communists took over the country.

She said monastic life is not for everyone but the City of 10,000 Buddhas is an entire community developed around the teachings of the buddha.

“Everyone who comes there has a chance to be a Buddha,” Shr said.
