[SZ] Ink painting by Czech buddhist painter (till May 8)
Latest Updated by 2006-04-27 10:03:28

WHAT does a Czech have to do with traditional Chinese ink painting and Buddhism? Artist Jiri Straka can answer the question in fluent Mandarin.

Straka, 39, from the Czech National Gallery in Prague, is staging a one-man ink painting exhibition at the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute today through May 8.

The show features more than 40 works Straka has done while staying at the institute over the past two months.

"Much of my inspiration in ink painting comes from my experiences as a Buddhist. I regard painting as a special way of practicing Buddhism," said Straka.

Straka was first fascinated by Chinese ink painting at age 13, when he discovered some picture books on modern Chinese painting in his parents' study. After graduating from high school, Straka entered Charles University in Prague to study Chinese.

"Fortunately, at that time, I followed the famed Sinologist Oldrich Kral's advice that I must learn more about the Chinese language, culture, history and literature before I was able to study Chinese painting," he recalled. After six years' study, Straka mastered the language.

From 1995 through 1996, he studied traditional Chinese ink painting at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing. At the academy, Straka got to know a girl classmate from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. They were married in Prague in 1997. In 1999, on a trip to his wife's hometown in Guangxi, Straka stayed in a Buddhist temple for one week and became a Buddhist. "For me, Buddhism is more important than painting because I believe Buddhism as a kind of life philosophy can solve many problems and relieve many pains in my life," Straka said.

Straka particularly loves meditating in forests in South China and seeing some of the unusual plants and flowers there.

"It is such a pleasure staying in a forest for two or three hours without thinking about anything," he said. "When I paint, I only use natural things such as flowers, plants, leaves and duckweed as symbols to express my innermost feelings."

Straka said his favorite works in the Shenzhen exhibit are the "Heart" series. The paintings were inspired by hundreds of pig hearts he saw in a meat market in Guangxi last November.

"The scene of hundreds of bloody pig hearts piled together was very horrible, but I still managed to take a lot of pictures with my digital camera," Straka said.

"I noticed that each heart is different from another and every one is beautiful, just like a flower," he said. Borrowing the Buddhist term "heart painting," Straka said what he meant to depict in his paintings was not the horrible scene but his own feeling of each heart as a beautiful flower.

About four years ago, Straka became fond of wearing traditional Chinese clothes. "At the beginning, I only wore them occasionally at home. But when I saw many artists in Hong Kong and Taiwan wearing these at all times and in all places, I started to do the same thing," Straka said.

Last year, Straka sold 10 of his ink paintings to European private collectors and he's sold three so far this year. All this has enhanced his confidence as a professional painter in his chosen medium of Chinese ink painting.

He plans to move with his wife and five-year-old son from Prague to Beijing this summer and live there permanently.
