Di vật khu Phật tích bị đánh cắp

MARDAN, July 1: Một khu vực Phật tích ở Mekha Sanda gần Shahbaz ở Mardan đã bị một số người lục soát và đánh cắp một số di vật gồm hình tượng, đồ gốm, và dụng cụ bằng sắt.
Khu vực Mekha Sanda nằm trên đỉnh một đồi nhỏ, cách nơi tôn trí bi văn nổi tiếng do Vua A Dục dựng lên khoảng 11 km. Ðây là một khu thánh tích vô cùng quan trọng mà một nhà hành hương thám hiểm Trung Hoa đã ghi vào du ký khi viếng thăm vào năm 450 sau Tây Lịch.
Dân chúng địa phương và bọn trộm thường xuyên đào xới vì khu vực này đã không có một sự canh chừng nào của giới chức có thẩm quyền. Người ta vẫn thường phát hiện nhiều cổ vật thuộc nhiều thời đại khác nhau tại đây và mang ra chợ bán. Người ta cho biết người lạ đã tàn phá khu vực bởi vì họ tin tưởng rằng nơi đó có tàng trữ cổ vật và tôn tượng Phật.
Cư dân địa phương cho biết thủ phạm đã tới khu vực đó và bí mật đào xới làm hư hỏng phần tường thành còn lại. Họ nói bọn trộm đã đào xới trong hai ngày nhưng cư dân trong vùng không biết được rằng bọn trộm có tìm thấy vật đáng giá nào không.
Có thể nói thêm rằng đào xới bất hợp pháp tại tất cả các khu vực thánh tích kể cả Takhtbhai, Jamal Garhi, Hund, Chanery, Kasmir Smast v.v..vẫn thường xuyên xảy ra ngoài sự kiểm soát trong một thời gian và đã có một số cổ vật hiếm quý thuộc các thời đại Greeko- Bactrian, Gandhara, Hindu Shahi, Kushan v.v.. đã bị đánh cắp đi từ những khu vực này.
Relics stolen from Buddhist site

MARDAN, July 1: A Buddhist site in the Mekha Sanda area near Shahbaz Garhi in Mardan was ransacked by some people who took away a number of relics including statues, pottery and iron tools. The Mekha Sanda site is located atop a hillock, 11 kilometre away from the area where famous Ashoka inscription rocks are situated. The site is extremely important and a Chinese pilgrim had written about it in his diary when he had visited the area in 450 AD. Area people and smugglers frequently excavate it as no one is posted here to look after the site. People often recover antiquities of various periods from the place and sell them in the market.
A visit to the site on Friday revealed that unidentified people had destroyed the site because they believed that there were casket relics and Buddhist statues.
Local residents said that the culprits came to the area some days ago and secretly excavated the site and ruined walls of remains. They said that these people worked there for two days but residents of the area did not know if the excavators were able to recover any worthwhile thing from the relics.
They said that some of them spoke Urdu and they were not checked by any official. The site is very close to the Shahbaz Garhi police station.
It may be added that illegal excavation at all the sites including Takhtbhai, Jamal Garhi, Hund, Chanery, Kashmir Smast, Rustam, Naranjey, Aziz Deri and Nogram has been going on without any check for quite some time and extremely rare antiquities belonging to Greeko-Bactrian, Gandhara, Hindu Shahi, Kushan and early Muslim periods have been stolen away from these sites.
