Lịch sử bộ “ Tự Ðiển Bách Khoa Toàn Thư Phật Giáo” Tích Lan
Việc biên soạn một quyển Bách Khoa Tòan Thư Phật Giáo trung bình bằng Anh Ngữ là một trong vài dự án mà Hội Ðồng Phật Gíao Tích Lan(Lanka Bauddha Mandalaya) chịu trách nhiệm thực hiện được chính phủ Tích Lan phê chuẩn từ năm 1955, trong chương trình đón mừng kỷ niệm 2500 năm kỷ nguyên Phật Giáo, như truyền thống đã chấp nhận trong những quốc gia Ðông Nam Á, nơi Phật Giáo Nguyên Thủy giữ địa vị ưu thế.
Hội Ðồng Phật Giáo chỉ định một phân ban chịu trách nhiệm biên soạn bộ Bách Khoa Phật giáo này. Phân ban chỉ định Giáo Sư G.P Malalasekera vào chức vụ Chủ Tịch và Tổng Biên Tập dự án Bách Khoa.
Năm 1956 khi chính phủ Tích Lan thành lập Bộ Văn Hóa, ban điều hành dự án Bách Khoa được chuyển qua Bộ Văn Hóa trong khi Giáo Sư Malalasekera vẫn tiếp tục giữ trách nhiệm Chủ Tịch Ban Hiệu Ðính và là Tổng Biên Tâp.
Khi Bộ Phật Pháp được thành lập năm 1990 thì ban điều hành dự án Bách khoa trở thành phân bộ của Bộ Phật Giáo thuộc Bộ Phật Pháp.
Khi Bộ Tôn Giáo Tín Ngưỡng được thành lập năm 2005, ban điều hành dự án Bách Khoa Tự Ðiển lại trở thành một phân ban của Bộ Phận Phật Giáo thuộc bộ Tôn Gíao Tín Nguỡng.
Phật Giáo bao trùm một địa hạt rộng lớn cả thời gian và không gian. Bộ Bách Khoa Phật Giáo nhắm vào việc cống hiến một sự trình bày bao hàm toàn diện Phật Giáo nguyên thủy và sự phát triển đã được hình thành trong suốt một giai đoạn hơn 25 thế kỷ.
Ðể cho kết quả của dự án được gọi là hoàn chỉnh, nó bao gồm những mục như thông tin về triết lý Phật Giáo và sự phát triển , các câu chuyện về sự truyền bá trải rộng, bảng liệt kê một số nhiều hệ phái và các nhánh phụ, miêu tả các hình thức nghi lễ được tìm thấy tại nhiều quốc gia khác nhau, lịch sử của mỹ thuật, hội họa điêu khắc, âm nhạc, khiêu vũ và kịch nghệ - dưới ảnh hưởng của Phật Giáo tại nhiều quốc gia, chi tiết về các đền đài thánh tích, thắng địa Phật Giáo và các nền văn học liên hệ đến Phật Giáo trong nhiều ngôn ngữ, cổ đại và hiện đại, với nguyên tác hoặc dịch thuật, và tiểu sử của những cá nhân, mà trong bối cảnh Lịch Sử Phật Giáo, đã giữ một vai trò quan trọng tại quốc gia của họ và cống hiến cho sự phát triển của văn hóa Phật giáo.
Bộ Bách khoa Phật Giáo này dự định sẽ được hoàn tất trong 8 quyển, mỗi quyển khoảng 800 trang.. Ðể cho việc in ấn được tiện lợi, Bộ Bách khoa sẽ được phân thành nhiều tập nhỏ, mỗi tập khoảng 200 trang , 4 tập sẽ vào một quyển.
Tập đầu tiên đã được đưa ra hồi năm 1962 và cho đến hôm nay thì 28 tập đã được hoàn tất. 28 tập đã được biên sọan chứa đựng các chủ đề tài mang tựa đề với các mẫu tự từ A đến S.
Các đề tài sẽ được đưa vào tập 1 của quyển VIII hiện đã hoàn tất. Việc ấn loát tập sách này sẽ được thực hiện trong năm 2006.
Các đề tài cho tập 2, 3, 4 đang được thu thập và hiệu đính cùng lúc. Hy vọng rằng những đề tài trong ba tập cuối thuộc quyển 8 này sẽ chấm dứt trước cuối năm 2007 và ấn loát vào cuối năm 2009
Giáo Sư G.P. Malalasekera, vị Tổng Biên tập tiên phong của Dự án Bách Khoa Tòan Thư Phật Giáo qua đời năm 1973.
Kể từ đó cho đến năm 1987 , Dr Sadhamangala Karunaratne, GiáoSư O.H de A. Wijesekera, Giáo Sư J. D Dheerasekera và Mr Bandula Jayawardhana chịu trách nhiệm Tổng Biên tập.
Vị Tổng Biên Tập hiện nay, Dr. W.G. Weeraratane đảm đương trách nhiệm này trong năm 1987 và vẫn tiếp tục cho đến ngày hôm nay.
History of the 'Encyclopaedia of Buddhism' project

The compilation of an Encyclopaedia of Buddhism in the English medium was one of the several undertakings of the Lanka Bauddha Mandalaya (Buddhist Council of Sri Lanka) which was set up by the government of Sri Lanka in 1955, in connection with the celebration of Buddha Jayanthi, the 2500th Anniversary of the Buddhist Era, as traditionally accepted in countries of South Asia where Theravada form of Buddhism prevails.
The Mandalaya appointed a sub-committee for the task of compiling the Encyclopaedia. The sub committee appointed Professor G.P. Malalasekera as its Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia.
When in 1956 the Government of Sri Lanka created a Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the administration of the Encyclopaedia was transferred to that Ministry while Professor Malalasekera continued to be the Chairman of the Editorial Board and the Editor-in-Chief.
When the Ministry of Buddhasasana was created in 1990 the administration of the Encyclopaedia was affiliated to the Department of Buddhist Affairs under that Ministry.
When the Ministry of Religious Affairs was created in 2005 the administration of the Encyclopaedia became affiliated to the Department of Buddhist Affairs under the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Buddhism covers a vast expanse, both in time and space. The Encyclopaedia aims at giving a comprehensive account of the origins of this World-Religion and of the developments that have taken place during a period of more than 25 centuries.
A satisfactory treatment of the subject should, thus, include information on the doctrines of Buddhism and their growth, the story of their spread and expansion, accounts of the numerous Buddhist Schools and Sects and of their origins and subsequent ramifications, descriptions of Buddhist rites and ceremonies as found in many countries, the history of the fine arts - paintings and sculpture, music, dance and drama - under the influence of Buddhism in various countries, details of Buddhist shrines and places of pilgrimage and of the vast literatures connected with Buddhism which developed in many languages, both ancient and modern, in original works as well as in translations, and biographies of persons who, in the course of Buddhist History, played important roles in their own countries and made contributions to the development of Buddhist culture.
The Encyclopaedia has been planned to be completed in eight volumes, and each volume to contain around 800 pages.
For convenience of printing the Ecyclopaedia is released in Fascicles, each containing around 200 pages and four such fascicles form one volume.
The first fascicle was released in 1961 and up to date 28 fascicles have been completed. The 28 fascicles already compiled contain articles on Headwords from letter A to letter S.
Articles that go into Fascicle 1 of Vol. VIII are complete now. Printing of this fascicle will commence towards Nov. 2006.
Articles for fascicles 2, 3 and 4 of the final volume (Vol. VIII) are now being collected and edited simultaneously. It is hoped to complete these articles for the last three fascicles of Vol. VIII before the end of year 2007 and print them by the end of year 2009.
Professor G.P. Malalasekera, the pioneer Editor-in-Chief passed away in the year 1973.
Since then up to 1987 Dr. Saddhamangala Karunaratne, Professor O.H. de A. Wijesekera, Professor J.D. Dheerasekera and Mr. Bandula Jayawardhana functioned as Editors-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia of Buddhism.
The present Editor-in-Chief, Dr. W.G. Weeraratane assumed duties in the office as Editor-in-Chief in the year 1987 and continues in that position up to date.
