Sri Lanka bans open display of meat in the market in view of 2,550th anniversary of Buddha's Parinibbana ColomboPage News Desk, May 5, 2006
Colombo, Sri Lanka -- The Sri Lankan government announced yesterday that has it imposed a ban on the open display of meat in markets to coincide with the 2,550th anniversary of the Buddha's death, which falls on May 12, Vesak Day.
Cabinet spokesperson Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the Cabinet has granted approval to a memorandum by Environmental Minister Maithripala Sirisena to take action to stop selling animal flesh in stalls openly displaying the meat to the public. Instructions will be given to the trade community in urban areas by the heads of local government institutions.
The heads of local government institutions are already vested with powers to take necessary action in this regard, he said. “Selling of openly displayed animal flesh has become a common practice in meat stalls and this practice should be changed from now onwards,” Yapa said.
