Sư Brahm thuyết giảng tại Đại học Curtin, Tây Úc

Bản tin của Hội Phật Giáo Tây Úc, ngày 5 tháng 5, 2006
(Bình Anson dịch, 06-05-2006)

Perth, Australia - May 05, 2006.

Ajahn Brahm Gives Lecture At Curtin University
Newsletter, Buddhist Society of Western Australia, 4 May 2006

As the world around us becomes increasingly preoccupied with the concept of being ‘successful’, the word has taken on a new meaning; one that is supposedly bound in money, power and superiority. Yet this does not have to be so.

On Wednesday, March 15th, students, teachers and visitors were given the opportunity to attend a lecture given by Ajahn Brahm on ‘Success is a state of mind’. Given Curtin’s reputation as a prestigious education institution, this seemed a very relevant topic and the lecture theatre filled up quickly – finally reaching capacity of 160 people.

Ajahn Brahm had only just arrived in Perth after dining with the Queen of England in Canberra the night before. He began his lecture by speaking of his experience at Parliament House. Although he, as a monk with no possessions or monetary wealth, does not fit the classical template of success, he was dining with some of the most prestigious people in the world. He said that this was because “one does not need to be rich and famous in life to be successful, they just need to be peaceful.”

So how does one become successful, if they are not in the habit of acquiring wealth or gaining power? The solution – happiness. “It is not that successful people are happy,” Ajahn Brahm said, “it is that happy people are successful.”

In this modern age, such importance is placed on efficiency and production, yet this hardly allows individuals to pause in their life, and understand what it actually is that fills the world around them. When relating a story about walking up the hill to his monastery, Ajahn Brahm recalled stopping and feeling disorientated. It was not that he did not know where he was, rather, he had driven past the landscape so often in a car, that he had not had the experience of seeing things as they were in real time. Upon stopping on the hillside, he realised that if the mind could take the time to focus on its surroundings, then the colours and the sounds became clearer and more vivid.

“In our life, sometimes we speed around so much and do not linger long enough to fully understand what we are seeing and feeling, and we live a life in greyness,” he said.

He continued with this thought by speaking of how the mind is forever trying to react, to be involved. Yet the mind experiences much more detail and absorbs much more information if it is given the opportunity to relax and be still. Reactive minds consume so much energy, which results in tiredness. If humans allow their minds to be still and become clear, then the energy is restored and results in a sense of inner happiness.

Over the hour long lecture, people from all walks of life were presented with many anecdotes which revealed the power of the mind. Ajahn Brahm’s lecture encouraged people to have faith in the ability of their own mind, and to allow it time and space to be still. Through stillness we can find clarity, through clarity we can find happiness, and through happiness we can all find success.
